I don't know much of Howard Goodall, other than he has a sparkling variety of creativity in his works I've heard; this piece sounds not only lovely and extensive, but I feel like there's a story to it. Like say, in his training and studies, he knew someone who treated piano pieces such as this as the second coming of Euterpe herself, and I picture a young and impetuous Goodall finding them easy to come up with and almost a self-parody. So, years later, he comes up with this song to commemorate the time he snarked a fellow musician for being so bizarrely fixated on nice piano music that is unusually simple to construct, to him at least.
Psycho rating has gotta be at least three and a half chainsaws.
A beautiful melody.
