As for the town of Latham. Just imagine a lathe (as in a piece of construction equipment). The a in Lathem is pronounced in the same way as Arthur Fonzarelli pronounced his A when he gave the thumbs up.

I truly comprehend how you could have mispronounced several Illinois towns which you may have never visited in person. But I've visited several of these towns and I do know their correct pronunciations. The town of Gillespie is correctly pronounced gill (as in a fish) es (as in the letter s) pie (just like saying the word pee). You seem to miss the letter n in the spelling of the town of Staunton. As for the town of Cowden? Just think of a cow sitting in a den. That's how you pronounce Cowden.
