Today we’re looking at Sony Alpha A5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera. This part of Sony’s Alpha line of mirrorless cameras that crams a very large sensor into an extremely compact camera body.
Before we take a closer look at the Sony A5000, I want to show you just how compact this camera is, as compared to an entry-level DSLR, in this case, the Canon T5i. And as you can see its extremely compact. The canon has its stock 18-55mm kit lens while the Sony Alpha A5000 has a 16-50mm kit powerzoom lens. And the most impressive part about the Sony is that it has the same exact size sensor as the APS-C sensor on the canon. The Powerzoom lens on the sony A5000 has a zoom rocker button on the side with manual focus controls on the front. The lens mount is made from metal and covers the 20.1 MP APS-C sensor. The Sony Alpha A5000’s grip isn’t very deep, but is pretty comfortable, considering the weight and compactness of this camera. And because of its low weight, you can also shoot single handed.
The buttons on the top are pretty well laid out and easy to access. There’s a dedicated movie record button, a main on-off button that hinges on the shutter button, which is surrounded by the zoom toggle button. It has a pop-up flash which can be adjusted to vary the flash bounce angle and a pair of stereo microphones on the left and right of it.
On the rear face of the Sony Alpha A5000, you have a Thumbrest, next to the Menu button, a control dial with a selector button in the middle and buttons for playback and image deletion on the bottom. The 3.0” LCD screen isn’t the best and is probably one of the A5000’s biggest drawbacks. The resolution is much lower than the screens on some of its competitors and even its newer sibling the Sony Alpha A5100. This makes composing images a bit more difficult. Its usable, but Sony could definitely have done a better job. The screen isn’t a touchscreen and does not articulate fully. It does however flip up for selfies and vlogs, which is actually pretty useful.
The right hand edge has a flip-open door that conceals a full sd card slot, a micro-hdmi and micro-usb port, which can also be used to charge the battery. The Sony Alpha A5000 does not come with a standalone charger. As for batteries, we do recommend getting an aftermarket charger to be able to pull the battery out of the camera and charge it. This lets you swap out batteries while your first battery charges. The battery life is pretty impressive, so you might not be needing all that many spares. There’s also a ¼-20 female tripod mount on the bottom.
The menus are all well laid out and navigation is pretty easy, even without a touchscreen. The buttons all have a good amount of tactile feel to them and the camera is very easy to operate overall.
The Sony Alpha A5000 can take upto 16MP stills in the JPEG format and can also store both the JPEG and RAW image simultaneously. And for folks looking to use still images directly in videos, the camera also has the ability to shoot stills in the 16:9 aspect ratio.
The large sensor size produces some extremely impressive images. The color reproduction is very accurate, pictures are correctly exposed and the kits lens is surprisingly sharp, as you can see in these test shots. A really good camera for both beginners and pros- the auto modes work really well for beginners and it also gives pros full manual control over exposure, white balance and focal points. The built-in panorama mode also works marvelously, producing some stunning wide-angle scenery shots.
So our overall thoughts about the Sony Alpha A5000? If you’re looking for an entry-level mirrorless camera, you just can’t get any better than the Sony Alpha A5000. It packs a huge sensor in an extremely compact body, takes impressive stills and video and is packed with features that will appeal to both casual users and seasoned pros. I just got this camera for Christmas as my first ever actual camera after dabbling with photography on my phone forever and was a bit disappointed that I didn't get the camera I asked for (Which was the Canon t6i) but after figuring out the basics of it, watching tons of reviews and testing the quality etc I really love it and I'm glad I got it. it's a great camera for a great price. It's a great weight and the audio along with video is surprisingly good.

loved this! Great review! Really appreciate the still sample photos and live footage you provided. I just wanted to check, for the video same of you filming yourself, how many mm was the lens at? I want to know how wide is the shot able to be. (any idea whats the crop factor, if any? on it?) thanks!
The focal length for selfies will depend on the length of your arm. I have long arms so the focal length was probably between 20-30mm

I just bought this camera on sale at my local box store. I had no issues what so ever connecting to the wifi. I have an iPhone, so I downloaded the Play Memories Mobile app and connected right up. Super easy...

A really great review! I just bought one, and I'm happy to have chosen a good camera. I don't agree however with the setup of the WiFi, it only took me like 30 seconds (I did it through my smartphone, maybe it's faster than setting it up through the camera, I don't know?). Anyway, love the camera and love your great review of it!

I really like your review about this camera! I was contemplating about getting this as my first vlogging camera ( that isn't my phone) or the Canon G7x since it's SO popular and highly, but I think i'll get with this camera since it is very similar to the G7x but a little cheaper.

i bought a ring light for the camera but it doesn't fit as i need a hot shoe adapter- do you know which one i can buy?
Would you recommend this as a good starting point for a vlogging camera? I've been eyeing it up for a while and really like it. How does the Silent Autofocus perform on the camera in video mode? Great review, the best one I've seen thus far.
***** Thanks for the comment! We most certainly do recommend this as a good starting point for vloggers. The autofocus works as advertised and is really good for staying locked onto a person's face. The flip screen and good mic are added bonuses when vlogging. The link to this camera is above.

In terms of video quality, what should do best. Akaso V50 Elite or this one? Mainly for daytime recording, where I just climb on a rock not higher than 5 meters. Exposure to sunlight would be important too. It's hard to compare both....

Hi I currently have a Canon EOS Rebel T3i and I use it for pictures a lot. I connect it to my blue yeti mic to record singing/cover videos and it works very well.
However. I want to travel in the future and I would like to do travel vlogs. But I can't carry a DSLR around to vlog with. I saw this camera in target today and I fell in love with it.
Flip out screen, interchangeable lenses, and it's compact. It's all I would need.

very well done review... you were very concise using only 5:39 but you touched on several features that I had been unclear about with other reviewers. I am currently on my 4th Sony digital camera - the RX10 but I want something even more compact for travelling. ideally I might like to have the A6300 but the A5000 is very similar for only 1/3 the price and I think a great value especially if I am mainly concentrating on still photos.

I just got this camera last night. I wanted a camera with the wheel that easily navigates the settings, but I went ahead and went with this one, as the others in my price range with that feature were not as good of a camera. I wish the flash worked while recording. I guess you need light to record. I actually like that its not a touch screen. I dont think ill use the wifi. I dont feel like messing with all that when I can just remove the sd card and plug it in the computer. It would be nice to upload straight to my phone though. Maybe ill suck it up and try and mess with it one day. Nice review, and thanks for letting me know where I can do stills within video recording. I was trying to figure that out just now.

Great video! I am new into photography, and I just bought the a5000. I am very happy with it, the only problem I find is using the zoom while video recording. In a quiet enviroment, the zoom in makes a little noise, but when I zoom out the noise is much stronger. Is it normal? or should I be worried about it? Thank you in advance for your answer.
+Wan Minut I doubt you should be worried about it. Its a kit lens and the refinement is not always top notch. Does the zoom in and out work smoothly? If it somehow affects the function of the lens, I'd be a bit worried. Other than that, I doubt your lens has any issues. Please subscribe.
+Wan Minut In the camera we tested the zoom sounded about the same either way. However, your camera does sound a little noisier than it should be. Is the camera still under warranty? If so, I'd recommend contacting Sony to have them check it out.

You can then combine the audio and video when editing.

Thanks! I'd recommend the 1080p at 24fps setting.
And you can use the Superior Auto exposure mode, so you don't have to manually adjust exposure settings. Works well for people starting out.

I'm stuck between this camera and a Nikon D3200.
What do you think would be best?
+Bethany Ross Thanks, Bethany! I would recommend this camera over the D3200 for two reasons. Better autofocus for both video and stills. And the flip screen that this camera has, which is very helpful for selfies and for checking your shot if you're in front of the camera. Additionally, the D3200 is also much bulkier than the A5000, which can be an issue if you plan on carrying the camera around. Hope that helps? What settings did you apply for the video portion of your review? I have used this camera and mine is not as high quality and I think it might be the way I formatted it?
