I doubt Joining The National Guard is Rhett's Ultimate Purpose in life! I've encountered idiots that think they are so Socially above Military Service they assume Military People are Too Stupid To Do Anything else! It is an Honor to Serve Our United States, And Nobody Takes it For Granted!

United States Air Force Retired, also well done on how you raised your son. For the record, my mother had her three sons in the Air Force at the same time, all in the same region, PACAF. I understand the feelings you, your wife, and you family are feeling. Time heals, just very slowly.

Navy Veteran and Navy wife here. Congratulations, Rhett and Mom and Dad! I know y'all are proud of him (and a little sad too). He will come back a different young man. He will gain so much from his time in the military: skills, personal growth, mental and emotional maturity, and how to care for himself and others. Only 1% of our nation enlists. I am grateful for him and all of the men and women who proudly serve our military. Much love and appreciation.

I joined the National Guard and went to army basic training at Fort Knox then on to my job training. I came back to the North Dakota national guard-- 75% of my tuition was covered. after getting my bachelors degree, it allowed me to go on to medical school.

……I was drafted @ 18 in 1970 during the Vietnam conflict 2 older brothers also drafted during the conflict one returned home from Vietnam and 40 years later passed away from Agent Orange cancer, little sister joined the Air Force right out of high school one week after I was inducted and retired after 20 years. 4 of my 6 siblings served honorably not a single bone spur amongst us. You are wonderful parents, You made Rhett a man, the military will make him a bigger man. When I got on the Greyhound bus, to go to Phoenix the first time in my life I thought any further west of our farming community I would have fallen off the face of the earth. Thanks for showing your side of your son joining. I was him to a T…. 2004 I just asked my dad for a ride and went off to boot camp.. was in Fallujah a year later and I still never thought about what my loved ones must have felt. I just wanted to prove I was a man. My graduating class of 2003 had 42 out of 75 graduates serve this country… both my oldest sons had zero kids enlisted in classes over 250. You raised him right and our country is blessed to have fine young men like him volunteer to serve.

Army vet here. When it time for him to “graduate “ from basic, go to see him “ graduate.” My parents didn’t, but went to my younger brother’s graduation. They told me later that they regretted it. Rhett will be fine. You raised a wonderful young man. You have a lot of veterans watching your channel, we are now part of your extended family in another way. If you have any type of questions just ask. We can give you our perspective. Now is the time for Rhett to spread his wings.

Heath, I really felt your pride in young Rhett as I watched tonight. It brought me close to tears myself.
As a veteran of a different war, and a different military, here in South Africa, I salute both you and Rhett in this very special time. You raised a good boy there, sir. Be proud of him.
Love watching your story unfold and I wait up every Sunday night to catch it around midnight.
    Stay strong.

Another Army vet. Sometimes young men and women choose what they need at the time. Only they really know. I'm proud of Rhett for making a good choice. He needs to spread his wings and develop as a young man. This will be good for him. That being said, I was crying with you both. Stay strong. God Bless from NC.

I feel for you, Heath. My brother’s boy went into the Air Force as did my sister’s oldest. It’s a scary thing, especially when our country tends to send a new generation off to war far too often. My son is physically handicapped, so he will never be able to serve. But I have seen several nephews take the oath along with quite a number of other relatives. They have had both good and bad experiences, but they have had an overall good experience from what I can gather from their experiences. This could be a very good, very positive experience for Rhett. My dad always wanted me to join. He was a Korean War vet, and he always told me that the military will teach you discipline and responsibility. But, the military is very different these days, so I am hoping that Rhett’s experience will be valuable. Hang in there.

Can't believe how tall Rett has become, hardly seems like yesterday he was just as tall as your youngest son, and he is shooting up so quickly as is your beautiful youngest daughter is. Wow life goes by so quickly, I remember you first going on to your land and looking around it with all your very young family. I felt your sorrow and also how proud you all were of him. Bless and keep you all. Love from Linda here in Yorkshire in England ❤❤ 🇬🇧

Army Vet here too. It's good that he made his own choice. I got the letter saying Greeting, yes, I was drafted and didn't get a choice. I had been for a medical examination twice before and wasn't accepted and was classified 4 F. I got married in June 1965 and then was drafted in Jan. 1967. Not what I wanted to do, but was fortunate to get to serve my time in Germany, and more fortunate to have my wife come to Germany also. That period of time was a great time to be in Germany. Looking back on that time, it might have been the highlight of my life. I enjoyed my time in the Army and sure it made me a better person for it. Rhett will change, that's for sure, and will become a different person, and you and Cedar will be just as proud of him. That was many years ago for me. One day and it won't be so far away, you will say, that has been many years ago, since Rhett went to basic training. Best of luck to Rhett and his chosen adventures.

Hey Heath, Cedar. Navy Vet 20years. Don't worry about Rhett. You've aready given him exactly what he needs. To contribute to his new community with integrity. Don't worry. I've worked with all branches of the military. There is always someone there, senior enlisted to make sure he knows exactly what to do with any situation. Someone who cares almost as much about our kids in the Military. As you do. He's got a good thing going for himself. He can take it as far as he sees fit. One enlistment or manny. Don't worry. He may see the world...but will be a better man.

I really hope your beautiful son enjoys his time in the military. I have 3 sons of my own and 2 step sons, and as they grew up I originally thought it would be a wonderful thing to have a son in the services. As the years have gone by I have changed my mind, because of the horror that the world is becoming. We are living In a very different t8me and nobody knows what the future holds. I know you are both very proud of your son and I truly hope that he never has to see any action, but as you say, if not your son then it has to be somebody’s son. I will pray for your young man that he stays safe and has only good times and makes lots of lifelong friends. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I can relate with the emotions and my prayers are with your family! My son joined the Missouri National guard between his junior and senior year of High school many years ago. He went to basic training the summer after his junior year. Then the day after his graduation he left for his job training. As a single mom it was the hardest thing I ever had to do. When he went in to basic training he said I didn’t need to write him but two weeks in he got to call and asked me to write him. They break them down so much and they need to hear from home. My number one suggestion is write him as much as possible. Make sure to send scripture and positive words of encouragement! We raise our children to be strong independent adults and to follow their dreams. No matter how difficult it is on their parents. You got this stay strong and pray often! ❤

I’m so proud of your son for volunteering; my husband volunteered to the Marine Corp in 1974 and honorably discharged in 1980. My nephew volunteered to Afghanistan in 2014 in the Army National Guard and was injured while fighting in Afghanistan. I’m so proud of brave people. I know the feeling you all are grappling with, and my son registered voluntarily when he turned 18 in the case we have to draft. I just hope I never hear the name “loser” ever again from anyone in this country.
