Thanks for your vids, Mate! I just finished shaping and sanding my paddle today after watching your videos many times. I'm stoked with the outcome! Glassing the blade tomorrow. Your glassing video is very good. I'm excited to test out my new paddle. Cheers!
I believe that epoxy is not UV resistant. I have seen many paddle/canoe makers fish thier work with a UV resistant Poly or varnish. Otherwise a beautiful paddle and love you videos
Great videos! Thank you! Can you use marine epoxy? Also - "beginners question" why are the laminated strips stronger than a solid piece? Thank you for the videos and expert advice - Peace! from Canada
Basically, it's the same idea as an I beam. The harder but less flexible glue or epoxy combined with the more flexible but softer wood. Also, it keeps the wood fibers oriented lengthwise along the bend. I always make mine with marine epoxy, I like the MAS epoxies but have had good luck with West and System Three. When you're laminating with epoxy, be sure to thicken it with either a commercial thickener like cab-o-sil or silica, or I use wood powder. Cheers!
Instead of "eyeballing it to get the shape symmetrical" why don't you make several guides for different places on the blade? Take a page from the old sculling masters and make your oars and paddles with hollow shafts to keep them light.
+Into The Dirtshop www.timbecon.com.au/power-carving/angle-grinder-attachments/extreme-dished-carving-discs thats a link to where I bought mine, at almost twice the price I paid two years back! But you should be able to find another supplier if your not Aus based.
great job mate, looks good and strong, hope your not in the line of fire over there as we were here in Churchill Gippsland Victoria a few years ago those bloody fires thinking of all you west people keep safe
west systems epoxy does not have UV inhibitors. this will make the epoxy break down rather quickly (few years, it will also yellow badly) when exposed to UV light. Normally epoxy needs varnished, unless you get epoxy with UV inhibitors. BTW I own a canoe paddle business and hold a degree in Wood finishing, hope that helps.
+JordsWoodShop I started using UV cure epoxy for fiber glassing, it is very fast and no mixing or temp and humidity problems. we still varnish over all our fiber glassed paddles, but I make far more simple oil paddles, they make for a better distance paddle, but require a little more care. great job by the way!

@@melindagillies4870 it is because glue lines each add strength, a solid paddle may have grain that runs at a direction out of the paddle and when twisted can break. Similar to picking an axe handle if you pick a good piece you will be just fine with a solid board, because you can check grain direction. If you chop up strips and glue it all together it doesn't make much difference in lumber selection, because the glue gives it the strength.
Awesome vid and the sound was perfect...... just one minor point please please please dont put your plane on the bench face down it makes me shudder , beautiful paddle though

Great video. A project like this is on my list and your video laid it out clearly. Thanks Jord!
The Mic sounds great. That power carving wheel does a great job. I need one of those. Well done! Douglas
Looks great. That grinding wheel is amazing, reckon it's going on the shopping list!
Awesome I feel inspired to make one for my kayak, interesting to see how they are made thanks Jord
wow this was super informative, not just a build video. great work!!
Lighter than carbon fibre? That's amazing. A completely beautiful paddle.
Beautiful job Jord. Well done!
+Jameson Elam Thanks!
Cool project series Jord....enjoyed that a lot. Nice one.
+Sharp Edge Woodworking Thanks mate!
This looks awesome man!
I'd also love to know the final weight. It looks great - are you still happy with it after a couple of years of use?
sound is perfect now! Nive job onnthe pedle!
Nice video, but getting long pieces of Paulownia in the USA is next to impossible. I guess I could use cedar, though heavier.
Very interesting species of wood ( Paulownia) i hear about it first time. A paddle looks brilliantly : )
+Zappalniczka thanks!
beautiful paddle! How much does the paddle weigh? Thanks
Sweet vid dude, cheers
Great vid, the paddle looks great. What was the overall weight? Where did u get the paulownia timber from?
So head for the water to show us the paddle and board in action!!!

i would really love to see how you applied the fibreglass... any chance for a video in the future?
+t0m89m0t there will be video coming
+JordsWoodShop great!! thank you. :)

What can you use for round up if you dont have this machine?
great video.

Aircon! I wish, it's below zero up here at the top of the world!
Do u have a name or link to that carbide toothed grinding wheel?

The sound seems ok now.

+Jesse G Good points Jesse, probably should be using a polyester resin for the glassing.

+Jesse G I am with you ..I can drive a large vehicle over my padle shafts, i run 2 layers of 12oz rail cloth on the shaft,, polyester resin

The sound was still off. It still sounds like you have an Australian accent. 😜
+Phil Reynolds Damn it! need yet another microphone!
