    Another great feature of this Nikon, vs. consumer grade Nikon DSLRs, is its ability to meter in aperture priority with manual lenses. This opens up a whole world of reasonably priced, often excellent older Nikkor glass. Personally, I mostly shoot with the 55mm f/3.5 Micro Nikkor and an even older AI'd F/2 35mm.

    Nice to see a new video on the D200. A CCD sensor in this one. A little noisy in low light but it does render great photos. A well built camera that is intuitive to use.

      All camera's are noisy in low light. Light is the key to everything. My D50 6.1 megapixel camera destroys in good light that's my point.

    I love and still use my D200 often. The best ergonomics ever. With good glass and using manual mode correctly it gives great results. These cameras perform best in RAW mode. With NX2 you can tweak those images into real masterpieces. You don't need a $3000 body to get great images.

      💯 Agee. Ive proved that time and time again. I usually piggy bank with my friend who's a pro. He brings the big guns. I bring a vintage camera with experience and when we sit down and look at the rolls. We both get great photos the only difference is his geat is 10k and my set up cost $400. D200 with a 50mm 1.8 G prime or 85mm 1.8 G prime. Or D5300 24MP with a 35mm 1.8 G prime.

    I have this along side many others. What I would do if you like this camera is get the fuji s5pro it has the best dynamic range and wonderful skin tones if you do portraits. It uses this body with fuji internals. It is great combination. The only thing is that the D200 shoots up to 5 frames a second. Where because of the complex sensor, the fuji only shoots like 2 frames a second.

    I use my D200 with a Zeiss Milvus 50mm 1.4 in good light. Does a great job. I'm embarrassed to say what I paid back 2006. lol My fellow photographer buddies think I'm lying when I tell the body I'm using.

      dude my friends and I saved up that $1000 to buy this camera and it paid for itself. It did so well it's still not dead and has over 1 million clicks. Now the rubber is kinda falling apart but that's a $15 fix if my friend sister wants to fix it, otherwise its better than cell phones imo. Crazy thing is I have a D300 and I still prefer the D200, so I put all the D200 profiles on the D300

    The D3000 & D5000 series can’t autofocus the Nikon ‘D’ lenses that are focused via a screwdriver sorta contraception where the power comes from the motor in the camera. Considerably limits one’s choices when it comes to lenses.

  • @dct124
    @dct124 4 роки тому +1

    Software: Topaz Ai, NikonPC, Adobe PS and LR and you're golden with any camera.
    Oh 1 more, about resolution, I tell everyone about this and that's Topaz Gigapixel Ai.
    If you used the old one, the new one is a lot better and its a standalone software. Basically you could safely push your 10mp files to 50mp+ files, not sure what anyone is doing with a 50mp file these days and if you need a 50mp file you're probably rich enough that you don't need a D200 or Topaz. But for me if I need bigger from my D3s then a +200% bump puts me at 36mp so I have a D800 with non of the drawbacks. Aside from +2 DNR I'm not losing much of anything. If I want the boost in DNR, I open PS and switch to 16bit or 32bit mode, edit, save.
    I've used the jpeg to raw converter and it's great. I'm considering going back to shooting only jpeg b/c I only shot jpg on the D200 and never needed more than a tone curve in post and had I known about NikonPC years ago, omg I never would've needed to edit a single image.

    Good review btw
    As for the lower level Nikon models like the D3000 series, having D series lenses with an aperture ring is the first step. You'd only be worried about adjusting iso which you wouldn't change but once based on time of day for outdoor and indoor you'd be at either 100 for strobes or 3200 for available light. If you're changing iso constantly, you probably should change how you approach exposure.

    I know this video is old but the D200 was better than the entire D2 series. It didn't have the megapixel count as the others but with only +2mp you weren't going to notice. Everything across the board except fps was better on the D200 than the D2 series, no exaggeration. The D2 series was specifically for sports shooters. Everything else went into the D200. DNR, ISO, Color Depth, Tonal Range, Flash. If you needed 8fps instead of 5fps then you were buying 2 to 3 D200 bodies. It cost less and outperform the D2x and at the time was the #1 camera regardless of manufacturer released at the time.
    You can still use a D200 to this day and get excellent results in all conditions if you know how to shoot in Manual mode. You can get clean night low light images without a flash and a 50mm 1.8 (or faster lens) which runs $100 maybe, brand new. A used D200 is $50-$100. The batteries today have higher capacity and a 4GB or 8GB CF card is all you'd need for a day of shooting.
    For low light just check your meter keeping in mind you're under exposing by 4 to 5 stops and you're going to push in post to get cleaner images than the in camera ISO processor.
    Additionally you can zoom in by about 5x I think with the zoom control on the side (read your manual lol) Everything was hold and rotate.

  • @johnnyjones3267
    @johnnyjones3267 5 років тому

    For a starter camera, the D200 is still a very formidable body. If you've got enough light and good glass, there is no reason you can't turn out 16x20 or larger prints from it. I've had this camera for about a decade and it has just recently taken a back seat to my new acquired D750. Don't get me wrong, I still use my D200 as my reference body as it has never failed me and the controls are more logically placed. It uses the older i-TTL flash system, but will work with all the SB-XXX series flashes, either on-shoe, or remotely via the built-in Commander mode in the D200.
    I've used the D200 for daytime sports, studio work, and general candid photography. Once you start getting towards ISO 800, it starts getting noisy. That's the main disadvantage to me on this body. Having a CF card is a little off-putting, but then again, most cameras of that generation used them.
    As far as zooming in on the back display, you have to press and hold the "+" magnifying glass button on the back while rotating the rear command dial to select zoom level. In terms of exposure, the histogram does wonders for exposure on this camera.
    All in all, this is a wonderful camera body to start off with and is built to take a beating. What better way can you think of to buy a weather-resistant body that boasts semi-professional level features and performance (for the era)?

    learning how to frame shots is more important than specs of a camera, dslr minimum.. learn how to frame shot and control your camera for the desired requirement under current lighting conditions. ez. when you get better and start working you can start looking at specs and required performance for your needs. these days cameras are extremely flexible and powerful.

    I own one for a while before switching to the D300s, A important point for new photographer's is not to chimp the photo's on the screen but to pay closer attention to the histograms which can be displayed on this camera, Another good point to the D200 is, it has the better CCD sensor vs the Cmos sensor. Like I said I had one for a while, and switching to a D300S was a game changer.

      @@blizzbee Hello. I have D300, S5pro and D200. At the same time, I first bought a D300, then an S5pro, and last year I was also given a D200. In short, the D300 is better than the D200 in everything. Except for one thing: color reproduction. If you like the color reproduction of the D300, there is no point in buying the D200 today. Personally, I shoot portraits with the D200/S5pro and everything else (subjects and still lifes) with the D300. For me, the color difference is too obvious to ignore. Getting a good complexion on the D300 is very difficult. And I only take photos in the studio, on the open air the D300 behaves even worse. And yes: I discovered with interest for myself that I like the color reproduction of the D200 no less than that of the S5pro! The only thing is that the D200 has a worse automatic JPEG, but the conversion from RAW’s gives excellent results.

    Steven Sager can you please do a "low light" review of Nikon D200? I want to see how it perform in low light situation. I want to know how high the Nikon D200 can go in ISO with still decent, acceptable noise and usable result?
    One more favor, perhaps you can compare the Nikon D200 with Nikon D90 especially in the low light situation also.
    I'm planning to buy that Nikon D200 cause I want also to own the once flagship camera of Nikon wayback I think year 2006. I want the professional look of the Nikon D200 and its durability. I will use it as my back-up and extra camera.
    I'm looking forward for my request and thank you in advanced. This vlog of yours is very informative and encouraging. More power to your channel.
    To all those who read this comment of mine, what is your opinion regarding the Nikon D200 especially in the low light performance? Please reply me here in my comment. Thank you very much also.

      @stevensager2854  6 років тому +1

      FELIX Videogram it's no problem, and as far as iso goes it's nothing special as all crop sensors are, being that you have so few megapixels noise reduction would overly soften the images. Your best bet would probably be a full frame camera such as the Canon 5D. What are you looking to shoot? I could try taking a few pics with it and show you.

    • @felixvideogram1840
      @felixvideogram1840 6 років тому

      Thank you very much for your reply. Yes Full frame is much superior when it comes to noise reduction in low light conditions. I already have a Full frame camera which is Nikon D600. I'm a wedding and event photographer so that's why I wanted to see how Nikon D200 will perform in high ISO. We often shoot indoors and as much as possible we avoid using the flash. We're utilizing available and ambiant light and if needed, LED light. I also have a Nikon D90, that's why I want to compare the Nikon D200.
      Thank you very much again for taking time to response to my request.

      Even though I really love this camera and I have been using this camera since I bought it back in 2006. The ISO is terrible. I wouldn’t use anything past 400. (And 400 for me is pushing it.) Now that is my opinion others might beg to differ. I do love the long exposures with this camera. And because of the lower megapixels you can not edit or crop as much as the newer cameras can but I still strongly recommend it for a beginner who dosent have a lot of money to start off.
