The Koronadal HINUGYAW Cultural Dance Troupe was established on October 28, 2003 at the city of Koronadal, Province of South Cotabato, at the southernmost part of Mindanao Island, Philippines. Known also as KHCDT, is the official performing arm and the Cultural Ambassador of Koronadal City which is committed to the promotion and the preservation of the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Mindanao while integrating the Koronadal experience and contemporary expectations in order to make its program relevant to today’s audience.
Hinugyaw, which means boisterous merrymaking, engages with national and international audiences through creative expression of culture and collaborative connections that help develop, document, research, share and educate, thus creating the center of excellence in dance education that prepares the next generation of dance and music enthusiasts and creators in the art form.
Kad Singkil, popularly known as Singkil, originated as a royal court dance among the nobilities of Pat a Pangampong Meranaw with its version among Maguindanaon depicting episodes in the epic poem “Darangan” involving the rescue of Princess Gandingan by the legendary Raja Bantugan. Performed during celebrations and festive entertainment accompanied by a “kulintangan” musical ensemble. Kad Singkil portrays the Princess wearing her singkil or heavy brass anklets, gracefully executes her dance steps that require agility and timing between bamboo poles arranged in a criss-cross manner (representing an earthquake) as she manipulates elaborately designed apir or fans including her retinue of female dancers with her fans symbolizing the auspicious wind under a unique and syncopated counterpoint rhythm. Meanwhile, the Prince performs around and through the bamboo poles bearing a shield and kampilan - a traditional sword, who intends to rescue the Princess which signals he end the performance.
