I’m not a fan of the mishmash imo I would’ve rather they focused on a specific thing for her design, like a scruffy hunter hound master / dog pound owner with dubious morals lol, a voodoo user with potions or a voodoo doll they stab, or a pirate who could be centered around drowning being covered in barnacles, you could even mix two of them: the pirate with his collection of sea dogs, a voodoo user who pricks dog dolls to command them, voodoo pirate like tia dalma, but I don’t think all 3 works it’s just too many aspects for me
Cartoons and old comics have done irreparable damage to what people think of as a "pirate". She doesnt have a tricorn hat or an eyepatch or a peg leg, but she absolutely has the cane, a symbol of status, the long duster overcoat, and various earrings and trinkets, which many real pirates/privateers/raiders actually wore 😌

that is 100% true yes, but i’m not sure that that is the whole issue here. behaviour stated that they would be having a pirate themed killer, so that set a certain expectation on what the killer should be like, and to most people that would be a more “traditional” pirate the houndmaster doesn’t fit that at all, and honestly nothing about her comes off as a pirate other than the cane. even her clothes don’t have that much of a pirate look, no pirate is going to be looking that well kept, stereotype or not. her power doesn’t come off piratey, NONE of her voice lines come off piratey, her design just comes off as a rich person from the late 1600s

Admittedly i was a bit confused on the design since she was supposed to be a pirate, but i figured "maybe there's some parts of pirate history i'm missing" and sorta moved on, wasn't worth obsessing about for me, i was just happy we got a new original killer.
I think Scott is refering to a "mainstream idea". If you ask someone how does a pirate looks, they'll probably tell you some 1700's sea shanties Davy Jones style, not a "modern" pirate from the 20th century, although they both are pirates. Could be similar to how the idea of an alien tends to be a bald green guy with big black eyes riding an UFO, while at the same time it can have a totally different design like the Xenomorph and STILL be considered an alien. BHVR needs to (somehow) make it clear that the Houndmaster is a somewhat modern pirate, but i can't think of how so idk.
She's very explicitly a Caribbean pirate, and that's pretty fucking neat. She's also supposed to be a manhunter I guess, though I don't know how rooted in history that is -- I assume there was a 17th century Caribbean pirate equivalent to a bounty hunter, but I'm not well versed on that.
My podcasts and UA-camrs told me to call everything woke, and I have no personal agency and thinking is hard. Gaming used to be for US. And by that I mean me specifically.
One small difference. Most of these woke tards would only complain if doctor were a black female, or a female in general that isn't top notch beautiful. If he were released today it would be crickets from them.
Also, apparently there may be a good chunk of people who didn't realize he was black...(I didn't either at one point...lol). Wraith could just be a black or shadow ghost Hag could just be a woods or forest Demon/creature (the hair is kinda a giveaway but still) Doctor could just be fried from all of the electricity coursing through him.
Her dog is mainly part of her lore but pirates did often keep animals on their ships, mostly for pest control--which is alluded to in Houndmaster's voice lines about sniffing out rats--as well as for trade. In addition, some historic wood illustrations suggest that pirates kept hunting hounds on deck to catch bounties or stowaways. I think the idea is that they couldn't give her any traditional pirate themed power ideas without directly copying another killer. If she had a pistol or blunderbuss, she'd basically be Huntress. If she commanded a pirate crew, she'd be Knight. I think the dog is a decent option that actually has historical precedence while still maintaining the idea of a pirate commander.
I think the killer is fine overall, but this is also my takeaway. The power of the pirate killer in this game should've leaned harder into pirate clichés imo. This power should've been given to a killer themed around being a tracker/hunter. It is what it is though, people have WAY too strong of opinions on this kinda stuff
Exactly this, I would have loved a traditional hound master like in Darkest Dungeon, a pirate killer, and a "rich noble" killer. But BHVR choose to make a killer that is all 3 at once. At least the Hound Master doesn't read dark caribbean mangas lol.

*BIG CORRECTION:* Houndmaster isn't a pirate, *she HATES pirates.* She was a *navigator on a merchant vessel* turned anti-pirate vigilante "pirate" for revenge after pirates made her father's crew fight each other to death and killed her father. *She only pirates other pirates.* Her design evokes being *above* pirates, better than them. Not down at their level. Refined and intelligent. She uses genius tactics and cunning rather than brute force. The Entity's corruption made her more violent, sadistic, and bloodthirsty like that of the pirates she despises, but she tries to remain composed. She could still kill her own entire crew (save for 5 who surrendered) with the help of her dogs when they tried to mutiny, though. Fun fact: her dog(s) are from Italy, most of them named after Greek mythology gods, but the only one she has left is "Snug", the runt of the litter, and he only exists in the Entity's Realm, similar to Victor for the Twins. Also the fact the evil pirate captain she wanted to revenge turbo-murder got dragged into the Realm but isn't the survivor is wild. We could've had a brutish pirate SURVIVOR. Maybe he'll end up a Killer, too.

When I first saw her and her cover art, I completely thought she was some “good” philanthropist who lured people into playing her death games with her dog, hence the name Doom Course, but obv that wasn’t it but you get my point, her design is iffy
Some people are upset that she doesn't look like a pirate but it should be expected from BHVR. When they create characters based off archetypes they generally change things about them that make them stand out and feel more inspired.
now that would be a cool idea for a killer! maybe something like having circus animals posted around the map depending on the layout that either alert or attack the survivors if they don't have a treat to placate them. then maybe give the Circus Ringleader a hoop they can toss that trips survivors for a moment, technically downed but if picked up, has their wiggle meter more or less filled depending on if they were already injured and can get back up immediately if they get intentionally dropped by the killer.
Looking at Houndmaster's backstory in her bio, she never really was a pirate herself, she was just attacked by pirates and has a lot of experience navigating and sailing due to her father being a sailor (who was never said to be a pirate either, ftr). A big part of her story is around the fact that her father founded a port town on an island called Fortune and created a trading network, which reminds me of the Trading Companies in Sea of Thieves (It's actually very similar to it, down to the named towns on islands. She actually kinda looks like a Gold Hoarder, which is one of the Trading Companies). If you take all of that, she sounds very much like a rich merchant who might've interacted with Pirates, but isn't actually considered one (kinda like how everyone describes her. Crazy.). I think her Terror Radius/Chase music, the way she walks, and the fact she uses a cane also alludes to this theme, as it sounds and looks very regal. Plus as some people already pointed out, pirates didn't always have the look you brought up. Media likes to use the "peg-leg, hooked hand, talks like you know how" kind of pirate because it's the most well known version of a pirate, but the Houndmaster looks more like how someone would actually dress in those times (minus all of the flashy jewelery, but maybe some pirates had that too). I personally like the fact they instead cranked the "She likes the look of gold and has a bunch of jewelery" knob up to 10. That golden skull-tipped cane with a hidden dagger in it is DEFINITELY way cooler than a basic Cutlass would've been, and they really sold it with the way she spins and flips it around.

My 2 gripes are as you stated if she's meant to be a pirate why is she dressed in gold and gems and if she's meant to be a castaway on an incredibly hostile alien island why is she so damn big like she's a French nobleman. pirates lived a harsh unforgiving life that had very little in the way of excess
While a lot was said.. The "People didn't do this back in the day" sentiment, is so subjective. I recall finding out the 3 *lovely* Americans I was connecting with over Rainbow Six Vegas 1, throthing at the mouth with new "chocolate-people-bad" words after discovering that *Left 4 Dead 2* would feature *2 playable* characters with skin they didn't agree with. The word may not have been "woke" back then. But certain folks cared too much about how their characters looked in games. That's never gone away. As for Hound Master. Yes I think her visual design is terrible. I don't get any sense of concept just by looking at her.
@@ScottJund i think it's because social media weren't as prominent back then. if you take gaming as an example, you still had plethora of websites from which people got their news, or even good old forums (other than reddit). nowadays, from my point of view, a MAJOR part of gaming news comes from twitter or youtube, but youtubers nearly always have a twitter account. so you have everyone (hyperbole) on twitter, which is now owned by musk, where moderation has been ground to dust, and nazis feel so free to drop n-bombs and r-bombs every 2 minutes. back then, most of them were shamed and pushed away. now, they feel like the loud majority, and a certain recent election will NOT help things at all.

Honestly, the talk about her design. From the leaked image of her back in like... late August - Early September, the impression I got from the design was a regal noblewoman with a bulldoggish looking face (which I honestly thought was a really great design and thought that be her base look but that might be an upcoming skin for her). I got no real solid impression of her being a pirate, even with the name of the chapter reveal being "Doomed Course" until I saw the name of her perks. And the map featured in the trailer didn't help and gave more so the impression that's she from the southern bayou like The Hag than the Caribbean. Now that I'm aware she is DbD's pirate representation, I see it more with her black and red coat, and I could see how BHVR is trying to swing away from the stereotypical pirate look by not giving her the classic hat and a cutlass/scimitar like weapon. But still in my opinion, her design is a bit of a failure in terms of first impressions from look and from the trailer that she is supposed to be DbD's pirate killer. Nothing screamed 'woke' about it to me. Wasn't even aware of the discourse on it until this video. If anything was to scream 'woke', I figured it would have been if they made Taurie a non-binary representation, but BHVR didn't go the route of "shaved head = nb" which they could have probably easily have done and they didn't.
From reading other comments, her aesthetic is based off of more historically accurate pirates. I think making her a little more disheveled would have been nice to see though.

I don’t really think that’s a problem. It’s okay to take liberties with designs and experiment. Not everything needs to be anchored to an archetype all the time. If you’re willing to explore and try new things, you’ll be able to enjoy a lot more than just the same design philosophies over and over and over again.
Challenging stereotypes is pretty good though, especially given how many archetypes are already appealed to in DBD without much creativity. Gunslinger for example is an extremely uncreative design (his look, not his lore,) whereas Trickster is a very unique design for a serial killer. Sometimes it’s nice to get something we expect like The Knight, but then it’s also good to get something fresh and unexpected as well. Not everything needs to appease our preconceptions.
I feel like the reason why people dont really see her as a pirate is because her design kinda stems from historical Caribbean outfits and themes like that (which tbh im totally for that). But i do feel like they should have made her not a pirate but just based off Caribbean history and given us a different killer that fits the pirate niche
One of the dumbest things about people who hate "wokeness" is like, one of the easiest ways to make a unique and interesting character is to pull from various cultures. The game would look so lazy if every character was Straight White Male. Like yeah if a game is just untextured cubes you can still have fun if the gameplay is good, but having unique characters makes things more interesting. Houndmaster's design is great imo, but she definitely isnt a pirate if this is supposed to be our 'pirate killer'
Yeah to me it's all about the intent behind a design. If making your character black was a last minute afterthought done for the sake of inclusivity, that seems like lazy design to me and it's honestly kind of disrespectful to all the history and culture of the race you're portraying. Behaviour is honestly really good at designing characters with real intent and I learned that this killer was the case after reading a lot of the comments here. It does justice to the source material really well and honestly taught me a bit about real world history.

Why not? See this is the issue with stereotypes, and exactly why I’m so thankful that they were so creative with Houndmaster’s design. Just because you’re used to seeing ONE archetype for what a pirate is, doesn’t mean that’s the only way to depict the concept. Dogs exist, and a pirate can have a dog.
I think it's less that the old generation was nicer and more that nobody talked about any of this for better or worse. Prejudice still happened, and nobody called it out. There was less open conflict, but there was still plenty of hate. It was probably nicer for you because you weren't in one of the hated groups.
The film franchise Pirates of the Caribbean contained Pirates who were mostly white guys with English/American/Aussie accents. By most definitions of woke culture, surely this is considered woke? Racially pandering to its audience despite it making no sense to the story whatsoever? By the way, I love those films (1st 3 anyway), but if we take modern woke culture by comparison, then these films are woke as hell.

Treasure Island did it too, hell a lot of the Pirate tropes we associate with them in our culture came from that book and Disney's movie adaptation. The West Country accent (arrr) speak that we associate with Pirates is only a thing because of Robert Newton's portrayel of Long John Silver that used the accent.
8:13 I can offer my understanding of it. The people who complain endlessly about 'woke' stuff have been told again and again by various sources (forum posts, youtube videos, etc) that woke stuff is invading their spaces (games, media, etc), and they need to fight against it. These people then get a hair trigger on seeing any sort of diversity in games, and then start complaining about it because why should their games be infected by what they see as woke garbage. Of course, like you said, Balder's Gate 3 is an excellent example of a woke game that's good, but it doesn't matter to them.
I would define woke as "low-quality presumed to be the result of the parties responsible prioritizing political agendas over delivering what the majority of people would like". Calling something woke is not a statement used to explain WHAT is bad, it's a statement about WHY something bad happened. The woke accusation is not that representation itself is bad, it's that when a game with representation is bad, the reason can be traced to the designers caring too much about that element of the game and not enough about the rest of the game. It would be like if a really bad shooter released that had amazing reload animations and people were like "this game would've been a lot better if they dedicated half the time they spent on reload animations to the rest of the game". That isn't a criticism of reload animations - it's a criticism of priorities and resource allocation. Which is the same criticism calling something woke makes. If a character looks really cool and has a great design mechanically, nobody will care about their race or gender. It's when those other problems exist that people start questioning if the designer might have been the type of person that cares more about equal representation across all media than making good games, or the type that spent 90% of their design time making sure the character's backstory references to real-world cultures were accurate and inoffensive, instead of using that time to make the character fun to play.
The problem is this always comes with the assumption you completely understood the entire design process of the game. You are just assuming that instead of starting with "lets make a fun game" they started with "let's make a diverse game.' Its entirely possible they set out to make a fun game, then added diversity later, but the game just sucked ass. Its also possible they set out to make a diverse game, and it incidentally ended up being fun as well. Often the people behind the aesthetics have absolutely NOTHING to do with the gameplay or how fun it is.

It’s really hard to determine what someone’s intent is when making a game and so labeling something as woke is ultimately always speculative. This is partially why people get labeled as bigots for accusing a game as being woke, as it’s just as possible a developer could choose to make a character white or straight, for example, to appeal to a larger demographic. Yet those characters never get conspiratorially labeled as woke… I wonder why that is….

YES! That's what I'm about. I've been waiting for a pirate killer for so long and very dissapointed about her being a pirate which we can learn only from lore page. All I wish for is themed killers being badass and fun like Deathslinger and Oni back in the days. Good ol cowboy and a giant samurai. Sci-fi Skull Merchant with Singularity were either unfun or overcomplicated flop. Medival knight looks great but has a weird unfitting power and is a man with a sword after all. And now a pirate. Not even having a parrot or a monkey as their companion or a sharp cutlass as a weapon of choice. It could've been just some generic ghost/skeleton/human captain or not with a hook hand with abilites that has to do with a cannon, hook, treasure, anchor - whatever has to do with the theme. Just so we have the vibe with the killer and wanna go yar-harr mode playing it on PTB or for the very first time.
She's the third killer we know to be dark-skinned, definitely not woke lmao. Maybe people just don't know how to criticise her design, because it is kinda bad but it's hard, at least for me, to put it into words.

The term Woke can be applied to many topics because intersectionalism (also known as the victim or oppression hierarchy) consolidated disparate groups and causes that would otherwise have nothing to do with each other or even hate each other. An example would be an absurd group like "Queers for Palestine". The problem isn't that people are accusing BHVR of wokeness because they included a black character. Anyone with a brain knew long ago that the company was firmly in that camp. No, it's the fact that the entertainment industry has been openly pushing these initiatives long and hard whether it makes them more money or not, and treating their own fan base with ridicule and disgust when they don't accept the force-feeding. Now the industry is so tainted that very few people are going to believe that a minority character is being used because it best fit the concept and story and NOT to gain points among the cultural elite gatekeepers.

I’m not entirely sure if she’s a pirate or a merchant as the lore states she comes from a town called fortune and her father was a merchant. To summarize the rest of the story her and her father go to Italy get a bunch of spices and puppies the runt being snug (the in game dog) and on the way back to fortune pirates board her fathers ship and the pirates kill her father use her to sneak into fortune to pillage and burn it down and strand her on a mystic island (most likely has some type of entity ties) and it plays tricks on any one who stays there’s mind.The locals come to fear her and snug and know not to mess with her and that’s when molack the pirate who did all the aforementioned things to her and her town appears again and she trick the pirate into eating his own son and before she can kill him molack is pulled into the fog causing snug to follow in pursuit of him with her close behind.
Hi there Scott, I'm a 25 year old right winger that listened to your entire video because I wanted to hear you out as you actually explain why one certain topic is bugging you as opposed to simply name calling and insulting people who are disagreeing with you like I seen with other people. So I want to give you a perspective on the other side of things to help shed some light. The first definition of Woke is the one and true definition that ALL people should know about. Companies that pander to certain demographic just in hopes of getting more money. Concord is a prime example, all the criticisms you gave are completely valid, but the anti woke people (who I refer to them as from here on out) also have a point as the lackluster product is a result of the companies hiring non qualified people to do the job as they are more concerned about how much "diverse" and "inclusive" their team is as opposed to actually making a good game. As such it deserved to be the biggest failure of 2024 with both people on the left and right mocking it. I also agree with your criticisms with the term woke being overused to the point where people forgot what it actually means, for example the remake of Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door people called it woke because of the rewritten script and also Vivian coming out as trans. While I personally think some new dialog is cringe it turns out the character Vivian was always trans as in the original game, that's what she was depicted as, or as a cross dresser. So in my personal opinion that isn't enough for me to determine that it isn't woke, especially since I love Vivian because she's a three dimensional character with backstory and lore as oppose to just a stereotype to pander to the LGBT community. Houndmaster being "woke" is honestly just hilarious because at least she's got a proper backstory, lore and character that makes her unique as opposed to being some typical "Big Black pirate chick" Sometimes people on the left will be quick to judge me as racist, sexist, homophobic and such because I have valid criticisms for media and games. For example one character was one skin color and now the changed it to "fit the modern audience" is a valid criticism because you're changing the source material and disrespecting it and the fans. When they cry out about it, people on the moderate or left will call them all the -isms in the book and completely ignore the actual complaints they brought on. Ironically that might've turned them into the crazy anti woke grifters that you know and hate, it's basically a cycle and switcheroo. Also no one would complain about Houndmaster being white and male because then people on the other side would complain about how BVHR is ignoring POCs and women. If I was this bigoted loser as people called me, I would hate David King, all the black survivors and especially the Unknown since it has a Transgender voice actor (May Zoey rest in piece), but I don't. A problem I have encountered in my daily life, is that I often try to discuss games I don't like because the writing is bad or lazy, or some gameplay mechanics suck or it just didn't keep up with the prequels. But every time there is a focus on minorities or something social, dozends of white knights come out of the bushes to fight me and call me a bigot. No joke, had someone call me a Nazi for saying that I feel like Sable's winning entry in the contest was a goth girl fetish thirst trap. Not "sexist". Nazi. It's so funny how people call her design woke because it's not a bunch of stereotypes pilled together about pirates when her lore LITERALLY states that she is no pirate, that she believes herself above them. My own definition of “woke,” what I mean personally when I use the word at all (which is admittedly rare): when a demographical direction is applied for no other reason than ideological agenda. Two specific examples are series 11 of Doctor Who and the live action Little Mermaid, both of which made changes to the main character for no other reason than an equity appeal. This doesn’t mean the changes are bad, just poorly motivated. Most people who complain do so out of prejudice against other demographics, which in my mind invalidates their concerns; but just because they’re wrong, doesn’t mean there isn’t more to the point. In the case of Houndmaster, I’d argue the criticisms are even more unfounded then normal; from my limited knowledge of pirate culture, she actually looks more authentic to source material then the stereotypical approach ever could have.
BTW, I’m betting we get a more stereotype design as a skin for the associated collection, either for Houndmaster or some other killer (I’m hoping for Unknown or Wraith).
To be fair, you are being a bit prejudiced yourself since you seem to think diverse elements need to justify their existence in a story. If a creator wants to include a black character in a story, they shouldn't have to write you a five page document justifying why it's necessary for the character to be black

My examples were intended to demonstrate the specific scenario where changes are made to an already established story, because change incites speculation as to the motive thereof. To expand upon the latter, I personally wasn't concerned about the alteration, as I did not see any way it could impact the story itself. There's nothing wrong with demographic variety, and in fact it can increase the thematic potential of a story in some cases.

I think that the actual racist people are a small minority. I do agree that the word "woke" is overused. I remember thinking that eventually, people would start using it against games that the main character wasn't White. (Back when it started) But at first, it was for things like if one of the characters was like "all men are evil" or "I'm gay, I'm gay, I'm gay." That being their one and only character trait. But, like you said, most people today will just say work and not actually criticism. I used to think doing that would help us get better games in the future. She just looks like a lot of jarring aesthetics that seem to pander towards the various things that want to be seen in DBD, and its all done in what feels like a very messy way. I believe I have found the only valid criticism that included her skin colour: because her skin is so dark, her outfit (which is a lot of dark browns, dull bronze/golds) blends into her, and on most maps the lighting really makes her outfit look less “blingy”, which I feel takes away from her pirate aesthetic. I didn’t even realise her thighs were exposed for ages. I would do a few things, firstly I would add more bangles, rings and jewellery with bright gold colours, to help both solidify the pirate look and to add some more cohesion on where the clothes end and her skin begins. Then I would add some lighter coloured trim to the clothing that would otherwise have its outline lost (around the boots, cloak and waist). Finally, I would put some classic pirate tools on her belt or something, a spyglass, compass and flintlock pistol are the obvious choices (we can assume the entity didn’t let her keep her ammo). And maybe get rid of her eyepatch?? Or at least hang it from her neck. It being on the side of her head just looks weird IMO (I haven’t read the lore so maybe the eyepatch location is crucial idk). The design actually works pretty great when well lit, but because it’s so intricate and dark, the details get lost so easily when in the darkly lit maps. The Unknown is a great design, but he retains it in game because it is both simple and bright, so no matter the map you can see it properly.

I’m not a fan of the mishmash imo I would’ve rather they focused on a specific thing for her design, like a scruffy hunter hound master / dog pound owner with dubious morals lol, a voodoo user with potions or a voodoo doll they stab, or a pirate who could be centered around drowning being covered in barnacles, you could even mix two of them: the pirate with his collection of sea dogs, a voodoo user who pricks dog dolls to command them, voodoo pirate like tia dalma, but I don’t think all 3 works it’s just too many aspects for me

Admittedly i was a bit confused on the design since she was supposed to be a pirate, but i figured "maybe there's some parts of pirate history i'm missing" and sorta moved on, wasn't worth obsessing about for me, i was just happy we got a new original killer.
I think Scott is refering to a "mainstream idea". If you ask someone how does a pirate looks, they'll probably tell you some 1700's sea shanties Davy Jones style, not a "modern" pirate from the 20th century, although they both are pirates.
Could be similar to how the idea of an alien tends to be a bald green guy with big black eyes riding an UFO, while at the same time it can have a totally different design like the Xenomorph and STILL be considered an alien.
BHVR needs to (somehow) make it clear that the Houndmaster is a somewhat modern pirate, but i can't think of how so idk.
She's very explicitly a Caribbean pirate, and that's pretty fucking neat. She's also supposed to be a manhunter I guess, though I don't know how rooted in history that is -- I assume there was a 17th century Caribbean pirate equivalent to a bounty hunter, but I'm not well versed on that.

Her dog is mainly part of her lore but pirates did often keep animals on their ships, mostly for pest control--which is alluded to in Houndmaster's voice lines about sniffing out rats--as well as for trade. In addition, some historic wood illustrations suggest that pirates kept hunting hounds on deck to catch bounties or stowaways. I think the idea is that they couldn't give her any traditional pirate themed power ideas without directly copying another killer. If she had a pistol or blunderbuss, she'd basically be Huntress. If she commanded a pirate crew, she'd be Knight. I think the dog is a decent option that actually has historical precedence while still maintaining the idea of a pirate commander.
I think the killer is fine overall, but this is also my takeaway. The power of the pirate killer in this game should've leaned harder into pirate clichés imo. This power should've been given to a killer themed around being a tracker/hunter. It is what it is though, people have WAY too strong of opinions on this kinda stuff

*BIG CORRECTION:* Houndmaster isn't a pirate, *she HATES pirates.* She was a *navigator on a merchant vessel* turned anti-pirate vigilante "pirate" for revenge after pirates made her father's crew fight each other to death and killed her father. *She only pirates other pirates.* Her design evokes being *above* pirates, better than them. Not down at their level. Refined and intelligent. She uses genius tactics and cunning rather than brute force. The Entity's corruption made her more violent, sadistic, and bloodthirsty like that of the pirates she despises, but she tries to remain composed. She could still kill her own entire crew (save for 5 who surrendered) with the help of her dogs when they tried to mutiny, though.
Fun fact: her dog(s) are from Italy, most of them named after Greek mythology gods, but the only one she has left is "Snug", the runt of the litter, and he only exists in the Entity's Realm, similar to Victor for the Twins. Also the fact the evil pirate captain she wanted to revenge turbo-murder got dragged into the Realm but isn't the survivor is wild. We could've had a brutish pirate SURVIVOR. Maybe he'll end up a Killer, too.

This video is where I've learned she's supposed to be a pirate. Her visual design and gameplay (even voicelines) gave me more of a circus ringleader/performer/animal tamer vibe
When I first saw her and her cover art, I completely thought she was some “good” philanthropist who lured people into playing her death games with her dog, hence the name Doom Course, but obv that wasn’t it but you get my point, her design is iffy
Some people are upset that she doesn't look like a pirate but it should be expected from BHVR. When they create characters based off archetypes they generally change things about them that make them stand out and feel more inspired.
I noticed she was a pirate in the first minute, as soon as I saw the compass icon for hwr perk and then read No Quarter. And I believe it!
now that would be a cool idea for a killer! maybe something like having circus animals posted around the map depending on the layout that either alert or attack the survivors if they don't have a treat to placate them. then maybe give the Circus Ringleader a hoop they can toss that trips survivors for a moment, technically downed but if picked up, has their wiggle meter more or less filled depending on if they were already injured and can get back up immediately if they get intentionally dropped by the killer.

Looking at Houndmaster's backstory in her bio, she never really was a pirate herself, she was just attacked by pirates and has a lot of experience navigating and sailing due to her father being a sailor (who was never said to be a pirate either, ftr). A big part of her story is around the fact that her father founded a port town on an island called Fortune and created a trading network, which reminds me of the Trading Companies in Sea of Thieves (It's actually very similar to it, down to the named towns on islands. She actually kinda looks like a Gold Hoarder, which is one of the Trading Companies). If you take all of that, she sounds very much like a rich merchant who might've interacted with Pirates, but isn't actually considered one (kinda like how everyone describes her. Crazy.). I think her Terror Radius/Chase music, the way she walks, and the fact she uses a cane also alludes to this theme, as it sounds and looks very regal.
Plus as some people already pointed out, pirates didn't always have the look you brought up. Media likes to use the "peg-leg, hooked hand, talks like you know how" kind of pirate because it's the most well known version of a pirate, but the Houndmaster looks more like how someone would actually dress in those times (minus all of the flashy jewelery, but maybe some pirates had that too). I personally like the fact they instead cranked the "She likes the look of gold and has a bunch of jewelery" knob up to 10. That golden skull-tipped cane with a hidden dagger in it is DEFINITELY way cooler than a basic Cutlass would've been, and they really sold it with the way she spins and flips it around.

I recall finding out the 3 *lovely* Americans I was connecting with over Rainbow Six Vegas 1, throthing at the mouth with new "chocolate-people-bad" words after discovering that *Left 4 Dead 2* would feature *2 playable* characters with skin they didn't agree with.
The word may not have been "woke" back then. But certain folks cared too much about how their characters looked in games.

nowadays, from my point of view, a MAJOR part of gaming news comes from twitter or youtube, but youtubers nearly always have a twitter account.
so you have everyone (hyperbole) on twitter, which is now owned by musk, where moderation has been ground to dust, and nazis feel so free to drop n-bombs and r-bombs every 2 minutes. back then, most of them were shamed and pushed away. now, they feel like the loud majority, and a certain recent election will NOT help things at all.

Honestly, the talk about her design. From the leaked image of her back in like... late August - Early September, the impression I got from the design was a regal noblewoman with a bulldoggish looking face (which I honestly thought was a really great design and thought that be her base look but that might be an upcoming skin for her). I got no real solid impression of her being a pirate, even with the name of the chapter reveal being "Doomed Course" until I saw the name of her perks. And the map featured in the trailer didn't help and gave more so the impression that's she from the southern bayou like The Hag than the Caribbean.
Now that I'm aware she is DbD's pirate representation, I see it more with her black and red coat, and I could see how BHVR is trying to swing away from the stereotypical pirate look by not giving her the classic hat and a cutlass/scimitar like weapon. But still in my opinion, her design is a bit of a failure in terms of first impressions from look and from the trailer that she is supposed to be DbD's pirate killer.
Nothing screamed 'woke' about it to me. Wasn't even aware of the discourse on it until this video. If anything was to scream 'woke', I figured it would have been if they made Taurie a non-binary representation, but BHVR didn't go the route of "shaved head = nb" which they could have probably easily have done and they didn't.

I don’t really think that’s a problem. It’s okay to take liberties with designs and experiment. Not everything needs to be anchored to an archetype all the time. If you’re willing to explore and try new things, you’ll be able to enjoy a lot more than just the same design philosophies over and over and over again.

Challenging stereotypes is pretty good though, especially given how many archetypes are already appealed to in DBD without much creativity. Gunslinger for example is an extremely uncreative design (his look, not his lore,) whereas Trickster is a very unique design for a serial killer. Sometimes it’s nice to get something we expect like The Knight, but then it’s also good to get something fresh and unexpected as well.
Not everything needs to appease our preconceptions.

I feel like the reason why people dont really see her as a pirate is because her design kinda stems from historical Caribbean outfits and themes like that (which tbh im totally for that). But i do feel like they should have made her not a pirate but just based off Caribbean history and given us a different killer that fits the pirate niche
One of the dumbest things about people who hate "wokeness" is like, one of the easiest ways to make a unique and interesting character is to pull from various cultures. The game would look so lazy if every character was Straight White Male. Like yeah if a game is just untextured cubes you can still have fun if the gameplay is good, but having unique characters makes things more interesting. Houndmaster's design is great imo, but she definitely isnt a pirate if this is supposed to be our 'pirate killer'
Yeah to me it's all about the intent behind a design. If making your character black was a last minute afterthought done for the sake of inclusivity, that seems like lazy design to me and it's honestly kind of disrespectful to all the history and culture of the race you're portraying. Behaviour is honestly really good at designing characters with real intent and I learned that this killer was the case after reading a lot of the comments here. It does justice to the source material really well and honestly taught me a bit about real world history.

I know that left wing weirdos don't know history, but it's entirely historically accurate for Caribbean pirates to be white guys of English descent.. Literally the most famous pirate, Blackbeard, was an Englishman... Learn history so you don't embarrass yourself like this in the future.
Treasure Island did it too, hell a lot of the Pirate tropes we associate with them in our culture came from that book and Disney's movie adaptation.
The West Country accent (arrr) speak that we associate with Pirates is only a thing because of Robert Newton's portrayel of Long John Silver that used the accent.

The people who complain endlessly about 'woke' stuff have been told again and again by various sources (forum posts, youtube videos, etc) that woke stuff is invading their spaces (games, media, etc), and they need to fight against it. These people then get a hair trigger on seeing any sort of diversity in games, and then start complaining about it because why should their games be infected by what they see as woke garbage.
Of course, like you said, Balder's Gate 3 is an excellent example of a woke game that's good, but it doesn't matter to them.

I would define woke as "low-quality presumed to be the result of the parties responsible prioritizing political agendas over delivering what the majority of people would like". Calling something woke is not a statement used to explain WHAT is bad, it's a statement about WHY something bad happened. The woke accusation is not that representation itself is bad, it's that when a game with representation is bad, the reason can be traced to the designers caring too much about that element of the game and not enough about the rest of the game.
It would be like if a really bad shooter released that had amazing reload animations and people were like "this game would've been a lot better if they dedicated half the time they spent on reload animations to the rest of the game". That isn't a criticism of reload animations - it's a criticism of priorities and resource allocation. Which is the same criticism calling something woke makes.
If a character looks really cool and has a great design mechanically, nobody will care about their race or gender. It's when those other problems exist that people start questioning if the designer might have been the type of person that cares more about equal representation across all media than making good games, or the type that spent 90% of their design time making sure the character's backstory references to real-world cultures were accurate and inoffensive, instead of using that time to make the character fun to play.
The problem is this always comes with the assumption you completely understood the entire design process of the game. You are just assuming that instead of starting with "lets make a fun game" they started with "let's make a diverse game.' Its entirely possible they set out to make a fun game, then added diversity later, but the game just sucked ass. Its also possible they set out to make a diverse game, and it incidentally ended up being fun as well. Often the people behind the aesthetics have absolutely NOTHING to do with the gameplay or how fun it is.

YES! That's what I'm about. I've been waiting for a pirate killer for so long and very dissapointed about her being a pirate which we can learn only from lore page. All I wish for is themed killers being badass and fun like Deathslinger and Oni back in the days. Good ol cowboy and a giant samurai. Sci-fi Skull Merchant with Singularity were either unfun or overcomplicated flop. Medival knight looks great but has a weird unfitting power and is a man with a sword after all. And now a pirate. Not even having a parrot or a monkey as their companion or a sharp cutlass as a weapon of choice. It could've been just some generic ghost/skeleton/human captain or not with a hook hand with abilites that has to do with a cannon, hook, treasure, anchor - whatever has to do with the theme. Just so we have the vibe with the killer and wanna go yar-harr mode playing it on PTB or for the very first time.
She's the third killer we know to be dark-skinned, definitely not woke lmao. Maybe people just don't know how to criticise her design, because it is kinda bad but it's hard, at least for me, to put it into words.

Woke is a term used as a tongue in cheek derisive reference to the people and ideas of the progressive movement. It refers to the fact that these people are perceived as incredibly arrogant and elitist because they think they are the ones who REALLY know how things are and it's everyone else who is ignorant, as in asleep like in The Matrix. So it's a blanket term for concepts falling under the purview of the progressive political platform, including Critical Race Theory, DEI, Marxism, intersectionalism and identity politics, radical gender theory, and specifically a hatred of Western civilization and of Christianity. The term Woke can be applied to many topics because intersectionalism (also known as the victim or oppression hierarchy) consolidated disparate groups and causes that would otherwise have nothing to do with each other or even hate each other. An example would be an absurd group like "Queers for Palestine".
The problem isn't that people are accusing BHVR of wokeness because they included a black character. Anyone with a brain knew long ago that the company was firmly in that camp. No, it's the fact that the entertainment industry has been openly pushing these initiatives long and hard whether it makes them more money or not, and treating their own fan base with ridicule and disgust when they don't accept the force-feeding. Now the industry is so tainted that very few people are going to believe that a minority character is being used because it best fit the concept and story and NOT to gain points among the cultural elite gatekeepers.
concord example: I heard a lot of "The characters suck because they are woke". No the characters suck because the design doesn't fit the role. A character who jumps and climbs around a lot just doesnt fit to a overweight kid with a long jacket. it just doesnt fit (in my opinion).
I was thinking the same thing when I first saw her, with the whole “it’s another noble, ok” but the perks and the staff made me really think “ah yes, pirate, I like this”

I’m not entirely sure if she’s a pirate or a merchant as the lore states she comes from a town called fortune and her father was a merchant. To summarize the rest of the story her and her father go to Italy get a bunch of spices and puppies the runt being snug (the in game dog) and on the way back to fortune pirates board her fathers ship and the pirates kill her father use her to sneak into fortune to pillage and burn it down and strand her on a mystic island (most likely has some type of entity ties) and it plays tricks on any one who stays there’s mind.The locals come to fear her and snug and know not to mess with her and that’s when molack the pirate who did all the aforementioned things to her and her town appears again and she trick the pirate into eating his own son and before she can kill him molack is pulled into the fog causing snug to follow in pursuit of him with her close behind.

Hi there Scott, I'm a 25 year old right winger that listened to your entire video because I wanted to hear you out as you actually explain why one certain topic is bugging you as opposed to simply name calling and insulting people who are disagreeing with you like I seen with other people. So I want to give you a perspective on the other side of things to help shed some light.
The first definition of Woke is the one and true definition that ALL people should know about. Companies that pander to certain demographic just in hopes of getting more money. Concord is a prime example, all the criticisms you gave are completely valid, but the anti woke people (who I refer to them as from here on out) also have a point as the lackluster product is a result of the companies hiring non qualified people to do the job as they are more concerned about how much "diverse" and "inclusive" their team is as opposed to actually making a good game. As such it deserved to be the biggest failure of 2024 with both people on the left and right mocking it.
I also agree with your criticisms with the term woke being overused to the point where people forgot what it actually means, for example the remake of Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door people called it woke because of the rewritten script and also Vivian coming out as trans. While I personally think some new dialog is cringe it turns out the character Vivian was always trans as in the original game, that's what she was depicted as, or as a cross dresser.
So in my personal opinion that isn't enough for me to determine that it isn't woke, especially since I love Vivian because she's a three dimensional character with backstory and lore as oppose to just a stereotype to pander to the LGBT community.
Houndmaster being "woke" is honestly just hilarious because at least she's got a proper backstory, lore and character that makes her unique as opposed to being some typical "Big Black pirate chick"
Sometimes people on the left will be quick to judge me as racist, sexist, homophobic and such because I have valid criticisms for media and games.
For example one character was one skin color and now the changed it to "fit the modern audience" is a valid criticism because you're changing the source material and disrespecting it and the fans. When they cry out about it, people on the moderate or left will call them all the -isms in the book and completely ignore the actual complaints they brought on. Ironically that might've turned them into the crazy anti woke grifters that you know and hate, it's basically a cycle and switcheroo.
Also no one would complain about Houndmaster being white and male because then people on the other side would complain about how BVHR is ignoring POCs and women. They put themselves in a lose lose situation if you ask me by getting involved into stuff like this.
If I was this bigoted loser as people called me, I would hate David King, all the black survivors and especially the Unknown since it has a Transgender voice actor (May Zoey rest in piece), but I don't.
I care about games that are great, and if companies keep pandering to the vocal minority over their own fanbases then we get shit like this.

The term was co-opted by right wingers as a derogatory word, then expanded to mean “anything diverse”. I don’t really care how eloquent your racism. A problem I have encountered in my daily life, is that I often try to discuss games I don't like because the writing is bad or lazy, or some gameplay mechanics suck or it just didn't keep up with the prequels. But every time there is a focus on minorities or something social, dozends of white knights come out of the bushes to fight me and call me a bigot. No joke, had someone call me a Nazi for saying that I feel like Sable's winning entry in the contest was a goth girl fetish thirst trap. Not "sexist". Nazi.

My own definition of “woke,” what I mean personally when I use the word at all (which is admittedly rare): when a demographical direction is applied for no other reason than ideological agenda. Two specific examples are series 11 of Doctor Who and the live action Little Mermaid, both of which made changes to the main character for no other reason than an equity appeal. This doesn’t mean the changes are bad, just poorly motivated. Most people who complain do so out of prejudice against other demographics, which in my mind invalidates their concerns; but just because they’re wrong, doesn’t mean there isn’t more to the point.
In the case of Houndmaster, I’d argue the criticisms are even more unfounded then normal; from my limited knowledge of pirate culture, she actually looks more authentic to source material then the stereotypical approach ever could have.
BTW, I’m betting we get a more stereotype design as a skin for the associated collection, either for Houndmaster or some other killer (I’m hoping for Unknown or Wraith).
To be fair, you are being a bit prejudiced yourself since you seem to think diverse elements need to justify their existence in a story. If a creator wants to include a black character in a story, they shouldn't have to write you a five page document justifying why it's necessary for the character to be black

My examples were intended to demonstrate the specific scenario where changes are made to an already established story, because change incites speculation as to the motive thereof. To expand upon the latter, I personally wasn't concerned about the alteration, as I did not see any way it could impact the story itself. There's nothing wrong with demographic variety, and in fact it can increase the thematic potential of a story in some cases.

If you don’t believe me, just look at the majority of important MCU characters, and practically every famous action hero. The inclusion of black characters in the stories you mentioned is done simply to reduce the over representation and balance it out a bit so everyone can enjoy the story more. It’s an extremely valid reason.

I do agree that the word "woke" is overused. I remember thinking that eventually, people would start using it against games that the main character wasn't White. (Back when it started) But at first, it was for things like if one of the characters was like "all men are evil" or "I'm gay, I'm gay, I'm gay." That being their one and only character trait. But, like you said, most people today will just say work and not actually criticism.
I used to think doing that would help us get better games in the future. But actual criticism, if the dev(s) are willing to listen, would definitely help way more.

She just looks like a lot of jarring aesthetics that seem to pander towards the various things that want to be seen in DBD, and its all done in what feels like a very messy way. Nothing about this killers appearance feels natural or coherent to a pirate aesthetic. The princess crown, the high heels, the dog. Its not necessarily woke, its just messy and seems to pander

I believe I have found the only valid criticism that included her skin colour: because her skin is so dark, her outfit (which is a lot of dark browns, dull bronze/golds) blends into her, and on most maps the lighting really makes her outfit look less “blingy”, which I feel takes away from her pirate aesthetic. I didn’t even realise her thighs were exposed for ages.
I would do a few things, firstly I would add more bangles, rings and jewellery with bright gold colours, to help both solidify the pirate look and to add some more cohesion on where the clothes end and her skin begins. Then I would add some lighter coloured trim to the clothing that would otherwise have its outline lost (around the boots, cloak and waist). Finally, I would put some classic pirate tools on her belt or something, a spyglass, compass and flintlock pistol are the obvious choices (we can assume the entity didn’t let her keep her ammo).
And maybe get rid of her eyepatch?? Or at least hang it from her neck. It being on the side of her head just looks weird IMO (I haven’t read the lore so maybe the eyepatch location is crucial idk).
The design actually works pretty great when well lit, but because it’s so intricate and dark, the details get lost so easily when in the darkly lit maps. The Unknown is a great design, but he retains it in game because it is both simple and bright, so no matter the map you can see it properly.
