News has broken that South Western Railway is preparing the first Class 455 for it's final journey to storage and eventually scrap. This is the beginning of the end.

Goodbye old friend indeed. I really hope it is a slow withdrawal process as I love riding on these units. As well as the 158/159s, they are the last link to the BR/NSE days for the Southwestern Division which is poignant for me. Thanks for uploading. Audio was fine BTW.
tbh I think they'll be around for at least another 12-18 months with the 701 programme going horribly but that's just my guess

These trains are good, I take one every day to school, but an upgrade is sooooolrely needed, they're loud, bumpy, draughty and generally quite dilapidated. I will miss them though, they're a good train for quick journeys.
I love these trains and will miss them.
Although it's good that southern are keeping them because most of the time I use southern class 455's as they run on my local railway (Sutton and mole valley line)
I’ll expect the southern ones will be replaced eventually along with their 313s but no plans as of yet.

they aren't bad, but they really are heavily outdated, my journey to and from guildford is much nicer on a 444 or a 450 than on the 455s (and much quicker too) the real issue with the class is it's low top speed tbh, rest is honestly livable.
SWR 455s are much better then southerns one
The swr 455’s didn’t have the drivers air conditioning modification so kept their original charm.

@@BPMR They did have the modification, however it's underneath the drivers side of the cab which is why they retained the corridor connections.
Actually the class 455s are staying and the class 456s are scrapping so clickbate and also the class 701s would never replace the class 455s they even go to thames ditton and Hampton Court
Not really click bait, the information was correct at the time the video was published. The 455s will go once the 701s enter service. It’s just taking a little longer then planned.

I agree give one to the york railway museum these trains have seen us through thick and thin and hold lots of memories being my childhood trains

The southern 455s were some of the first trains I drove on the mainline so they old a special little place for me.

Respected to the second generation trains, like Class 455/456. They are treat like Class 317, 319 & 321/322for same body. Also same to 313s and 315s for metro services and rarely fast services for their express units unable. I hoping the society groups planning to saved 455/456. I haven’t travelled on 701 yet - but it might similar and useful (if they have USB/laptop chargers) with Class 720 (Greater Anglia) - I will missed 317s/321s/322s. 360s are begin to new life with East Midlands. I hoping other operators interested with 379s (could converted to 375s/377s by added 3rd rail shoes supply.)
456's gone aswell already, as a 455 lover ill probably end up being on the very last one
Let’s just hope some will be preserved. Also is this the first non-crash realated scrap as an 8-coach train (455913 and another) was involved in a crash between a truck and the train, which I think the unit of the front coaches were beyond repair (not talking about 913 here) and were scrapped in the end. The unit 913 was repaired at Wolverton. Also are they being scrapped at Newport or Rotherham Booths C.F
If I remember a cement truck drove through a bridge and landed on a unit which got crushed. Near Oxshott I think.

Christ first southern gets rid of all their 455 units now southwestern
3 years later and they are still here.
It’s gonna really be hard going the day they all get withdrawn and scrapped.
I was on one last weekend and could see there age (especially on the inside)
Wish they would put them on local routes. Example: Portsmouth to Southampton stopper
Im gonna miss those 455s!!!Idky gtr still have 455s, like their not even refirbushed. Their slow too. I like 455s but the original have had their day

They were built in the early 80s so they are coming to the end of their lives. Although the southern 313s are older.
Random prediction: Southern would buy some 455 for their southern Coastway services before abolishing the 313s, possibly one being saved and converted back to overhead and third rail usage for use on the ECML with a preserved 317

They came into service in 1987
It's a shame but they would have been replaced ages ago had their not have been so many issues with SWR and the Aventras. Overall not a fan of their replacements at all but i guess theyre okay
The Adventras will need to grow on me but I haven’t seen a SWR one yet.
Will 450s Take Over The Routes Where The 455s Used To Take Over?
SWR are waiting for the class 701s which will take over most of the duties currently occupied by the 455s.

Not that I particularly like them but i might be on one of the last ones or something newer come fri/sat or sun, as i plan to to chessington.
There’s still plenty around as it will take time for them to be replaced. But catch them whilst you can.
Southern has now Scrapped all their Class 455 trains now
They are in the process of going. They’ve lasted longer then expected due to delays in getting the 701s ready for service.

The 701’s are being delivered and tested now. There’s no date yet as to when they’ll enter passenger service but it should be sometime within the next few months. It will be a while before they are all in service.

@@BPMR recently found out that the 377s do have 3rd rail and overhead pantographs I was trying to find out since 2009 when I was on a southern train that had no 3rd rail I don't remember the station but I know it was a class 377 it iwaa beautiful I love the southern livery
@@BPMR I also very much enjoyed the rolling stock videos to the point I don't know wich ones I've watched bc I've watched so much however I've noticed a lot of train youtubers forget about greater anglia and the west anglia mainline

They can just preserve them, easy as that.
At least one unit should get preserved although I’m not sure it one has been allocated for preservation yet. Sometimes only a single driving car gets preserved for the national collection.
I appreciate that some people will miss these trains, but when you commute on them everyday you start to get tired of them. The doors rattle, the seats are always dirty, there is always something broken or some kind of graffiti on board. Quite frankly, for me, the sooner they get rid of them, the better.
The 455's have been around for nearly 40 years so their time is nearly up. I wonder if we would feel the same in the future when the new trains of today get old.
@@BPMR Yep, we probably will. But for now, we can look forward to modern trains. My train was actually changed from a 455 to a 450 this week. It feels like luxury on board! It remains to be seen if they will switch back to the 455's on my route or stay with the 450's, as it might just be because of engineering works. One thing I can say was that the 455's were consistantly 1 minute late when they arrive, but the 450 is always early, not to mention much quieter on board!
I think the class 455 that SWR own could go over to GTR to run around south London
The Class 455 on SWR are due a complete overhaul, which has not been funded and are owned by a different leasing company than the GTR Class 455.
Unlike SWR Class 455, GTR Class 455 still have a long term agreement in place with their leasing operator to keep the Class 455 going as they are not looking for any replacement any time soon, as such GTR Class 455 are in a lot better condition as they are still being maintained for the foreseeable future rather than being run into the ground like many operators do when the fleet is being replaced.

Where they being stored?
They are heading for storage at Long Marston for the time being.
But, I know that Southern will be getting rid of their 455's eventually. I would say in a year or 18 months.
Southern as of right now have no official plans to replace their Class 455, similar to their Class 313. Having read about it, the Class 455 and Class 313 are dirt cheap to maintain and due to their age the leasing costs of the trains are next to nothing when compared to the more modern rolling stock leasing costs.
With them also being PRM compliant (i think), Southern has no real reason to get rid of them and with no incentives to do so.
That’s a good explanation for southern having no plans for their replacement. I would also suspect that nothing will be formalised or changed until the GTR franchise has been renegotiated as a concession under GBR.
@Blaze646Epic The one issue that is faced by this is that despite all the issues with Southern Class 455s, they have certainty within their future as such have been maintained for the foreseeable future.
SWR Class 455s are planned to be withdrawn but as such, they have not been given a Category D overhaul, meaning these trains are running out of milage and will cost a fortune to do.
This is not to mention that the Class 455s used by Southern and Class 455s used by SWR are owned by two different leasing companies
