Imagine the Netherlands in December, cold and bleak... You get on a plane for a tour of Colombia, Venezuela and Porto Rico. Quite a full schedule of concerts, a radio recording, hosting a master class at the conservatory of Caracas and a festival in San Juan de Porto Rico.... At Porto Rico, the band had some time to themselves and we planned to use that time to rehearse.... But yes, the bay of San Juan, the sun, the sea, the beach, the promenade, the stores and cafes, people in and on the water at a temperature of 32 degrees. I don't need to explain why nothing came of our planned rehearsal. “Bahía de San Juan” is actually about truant musicians.
Many (community) bands have other ensembles besides the concert band, such as a mallet/percussion band, and often there is a desire to “perform” pieces together. There is not a lot of such material available, hence this music for full mallet/percussion band and band. So a lot of (melodic) percussion; the “Latin” style of this piece includes the percussion and “Latin style” vibraphone and marimba parts. Even for an orchestra with fewer percussionists, this piece can be performed very well. One player combines vibraphone & glockenspiel, one player on congas (possibly together with the big drum), plus a drummer and a timpanist. A 'combined' vibraphone & glockenspiel' part is included and can thus be performed by one player in the absence of sufficient mallet players. This modified part is not in the score.
