    An excellent demo, maestro!! Thanks!
    When Titian was asked how he creates his painttings, he replied, "Velature, trenta o quaranta!"

    What a wonderful presentation today Luis. Titian is a majestic artist, no wonder his paintings are so admired all over the world. My first direct contact with his work was at the Frick Collection in New Yok. It was Portrait of a Man in a Red Hat. An impeccable composition, in every sense. Thanks for sharing all the technical aspects of his process. Great job. Looking forward to watching the October “surprise” you promised today. Thanks a lot.

    Brilliant information, thank you for your explanation and guiding in already more of these lectures : The Dutch master Johannes Vermeer is quite in the picture now these days in Holland: 2023 is 400 years? away from his funeral. I think his use of lenses and Camera Obscure is a very interesting approach in the way of: the leap to photography later in 18 hundreds.

    I was just wondering the correct procedure of applying a glaze of yellow ochre and a velatura of yellow ochre and white mixed together. One being a warming transparent technique, the other in cooling semi-transparent technique. Would it be best to first glaze first before applying a velatura? In other words create a warm skin tone to correct an overpainting then apply a cooler velatura over the glaze? Or the other way around? Is this what Rubens or Rembrandt did? I am new to oil painting, being an acrylic painter for many years, and enjoy watching your videos.

    That's great!
    For me, it’s a problem that the paint dries so quickly on the surface. I can't manage to create soft shades. 🥺
    Do you mix the oil paint with any thinner before applying the first layer?

    I am a first year Art History student. Would you (or someone) please tell me what is meant by the "ground"? Is this the 1st layer or base of the piece? My professor has not not discussed this. I just discovered this video and am so happy I did! I give my first presentation on Titian's, "Pastoral Concert" next week.Thank you!!!

    • @LuisBorreroVisualArtist
      @LuisBorreroVisualArtist  8 місяців тому

      Thank you for your comment and welcome to my channel. Your assessment of the term "ground" is correct. This word describes the priming layer used to render the surface smooth or to cover its texture in preparation for applying the first layers of paint.

    Hi, love the video, just wanted to ask if Titian would use black oil as binder or as a medium to help paint flow?
    Also I know he used a “Gesso de Bologne” which is actually available to buy but nowhere does it say what kind of calcium it is, calcium carbonate? Calcium sulphate? Or something else, just wandering if you might know?

    • @LuisBorreroVisualArtist
      @LuisBorreroVisualArtist  2 роки тому +1

      Hello Matthew: I have asked myself the same question many times. I have tried both methods of mulling the paint with black oil and adding it as a medium to paint that has been mulled with washed linseed oil and the results are very similar. The paint flows nicely in both cases and the paint acquires a wonderful texture, but it does yellow slightly with time.

    • @LuisBorreroVisualArtist
      @LuisBorreroVisualArtist  2 роки тому +1

      Where are you getting Gesso de Boulogne from? Any Gesso coming from Italy is usually Calcium Sulphate.

      Hello Divine dia: Thank you for writing. I appreciate your interest in my teaching. I have a classical drawing online course coming up starting January 22. The semester long course focuses entirely on drawing skills such as value, light/shade theory, proportion, perspective and composition. I teach this course with a structured curriculum designed to pace the student step by step with personalized critiques every step of the way. These are not recorded courses, but online live one on one teaching on a professional teaching app call Go to Meeting. Registration for the course is very easy through the link below, if you’re interested. Your location is not an issue as long as our time zones are close enough and your internet connection is good. My class meets at 9am (Atlantic standard time). I am going to share the link here, so you can read all the details including the full detailed curriculum and registration. ateliersanjuan.org/registration-1/registration-online-2020.
      If you have any other questions, feel free to write. Best wishes, Happy New Year!!

    Hi Maestro! I'd like to know how many sessions did this painting did take you and if you use any kind d of turpentine to dilute your colors? It would be nice if one day you talk about your brushes, I notice you use no plain brushes. Thanks for this amazing content, I think there's no other channel on UA-cam with this quality.

      Hello TT: I worked this demo as a part of my online painting workshop. This a full reconstruction of Titian’s early technique that includes 24 videos about an hour long. I shared a quick summary of the portrait only but I copied the entire painting for my online class over a period of a month. The colors were diluted with heat bodied oil thinned with spike oil to various proportions depending on the sequence of the layers. My brushes are indeed high end mop quills from Da Vinci or Escoda bristles. Thank you for sharing your feedback. 🙏🏻

    you have mentioned in this video about the soft brush you are using, this brush looks like a watercolours brush, can you use such soft brush on oil painting?
    Thanks

    • @LuisBorreroVisualArtist
      @LuisBorreroVisualArtist  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for subscribing! Welcome to my channel. The brush that I am using in this demo is called a Squirrel hair mop. This type of brush is mentioned by various treatises on the art of painting. The brush is commonly used for watercolor nowadays, but it’s has superb handling qualities with oils. You cannot lay in paintings with this type of brush. I use it only for Velaturas and very soft transitions of paint in the top layers only.

    • @harrysimons8119
      @harrysimons8119 2 роки тому +1

      Stand oil is heated but i believe its heated in an environment either under pressure or without oxygen. Either way it actually takes longer to dry than normal linseed oil. What the video refers to is thickened oil or sun thickened oil. Its an orange thick linseed oil. Its quicker to dry than normal linseed oil.
