Words cannot express my gratitude for this, as I've watched every documentary on all European Kings and Queens and now, use them throughout the night for background noise as I sleep. It may sound weird but its really all I can actually relax to. Lol. So, thank you very much for this! You are not kidding Misty Lucas! Lol, I’m a history buff 💪🏻 myself. The moment the documentary started with King Alfred the Great & then the Great Charlemagne. Then continued with all the GREAT Saxon Kings (queens Æthelflæd ) “I bit the bait and I was hooked!” Though I’m not a big fan of the Norman conquest (I know, all I need to know, about the Normandy conquest & all of their Kings & Queens) I still find it AMAZING how King Alfred united Wessex and Mercia. How his Son, Daughter and Son-in-law kept the Heathens in check! I’m sorry, I can’t do a full 7+ hrs lol God bless all of you who did, shoosh!

Then her nephew aethelstan took northumbria to finally unite the english and became the first king of the english and then king of all britain. But Americans could care less about Royalty and Aristocracy. When you state "and" does that mean you would be interested in a combined timeline of sorts delving into both? Athelstan covered 895-936 while Washington led 1789-1797. This leads to 894 years of only England's Royalty. Would that not be a one sided documentary?

I'm paralyzed from my chest down. But if I were granted a life long dream to happen, it's to be able to travel around the world, but in this manner. I'd start in Canada, stay for a month so that I could explore the country as much as possible. Then on to Greenland, stay a month to explore the country. Then on to Iceland, staying a month, on to Norway staying a month. On to the United Kingdom starting in Ireland, then Scotland and England. While I'm traveling I plan on writing a story about how the lives of the handicapped and veterans of that country are treated. I'd like to keep going East as such going around the world in this same manner. It'll take me a few years but it will give me the greatest adventure of my life and to explain how things are in the countries I've had the privilege to go see. One of the things that struck me when i visited the Tower of London a couple of years ago was seeing the suits of Henry VIII's armor. He was not a big fat guy as portraits depict him, not as a younger man when that armor was made for him. Id guess he was a little smaller than me (im 6'0" , but heavier than he was then, but he ended up much heavier). Its funny how a specific physical object tied to a historical figure can make them so !uch more REAL to you than just names and portraits in a book can do. THAT suit of armor, 3 feet away from in in that glass case, was worn by this guy who Ive read and heard about all my life. There are dents on it from tournaments he competed in. Its workmanship is superb, looks like something a modern smith would make today with modern tools and materials. Really an amazing experience to see. As an American from California, the oldest buildings in my home town date to around the Civil War, like, 1860ish. In the UK, I visited neighborhood pubs that were a century or two older than that. It blows my mind...and British people just take it for granted.

    Great documentary!
I do wonder why the likes of Edward VI and Richard I made the list as their impact on England perhaps would have been much less than the likes of Elizabeth I, Victoria, Edward I, Edward III and Henry V.

Alfred spoke Anglo-Saxon. The language we call English would develop roughly 300 years later after the invasion of the Normans. For a cool example of the Anglo-Saxon language check out “pumped up kicks Anglo-Saxon”

Very enjoyable Program. Richard the Lionheart became famous in the US thanks to Hollywood movies about him, ans well as countless series of programs about Robin Hood. The Hollywood version is NOT accurate, but it was an interesting story with a happy ending. 'Richard's life was not all that happy.

Alfred was really the mini Charlemagne of England, in fact his much smaller kingdom repelled a full in Viking assault, even Charlemagne himself recognized the Norse threat and thought it was the most dangerous of threats to his future kingdom.
He established the economy, possibly navy but definitely established the military, re arranged all of England, went from last Anglo Saxon stronghold desperately attempting to survive to most powerful kingdom in the British isles. All in his reign.
His kingdom was close to destruction, and a few key years is all he needed to establish every aspect of Wessex economy military and gov, forming England into how it is recognized in medieval times. Defeated and haulted the Danes and even saw a turning of the tables in terms of who has the powerful position.
Alfred though ruler of a smaller more fractured region of Europe, was a great king, England was eventually overcome by not only Scandinavians but then the Norman’s, and the institutions, as well as gov and economic set up seem to be recognizable as Alfred’s creation. Pretty crazy stuff
