    I wind my automatic every morning. In my mind, it provides a better precision by giving the maximum power of it. Your explication, that we spend (I do at least) more time in front of my desk than walking during the day it is a good point too. Great video!

    Happy New Year!
    Good explanation and advice. Even the more modern Seiko 7s26 used in the ever popular SKX007/009 (recently discontinued) has no manual wind option. Having a screw down crown makes manual winding a bit of a pain.

    Thank you very much for this video! Almost all Watchuseek forum threads have over the years classified winding automatics as a cardinal sin against horology. They claim this will wear out the involved gears prematurely. Being a desk-worker I could never get enough of a power reserve built on my (mostly Miyota unidirectional powered) watches. So I gave up on them.
    Eventually I found Vostok and its bi-directional 2416B movement which is super efficient and has no sensitivity to hand-winding. (It is basically a handwinding movement with automatic works added on). I literally give it 10 winds daily before going to bed and inevitable find it happily ticking away the next morning.

    • @HorologyBiology
      @HorologyBiology  Рік тому +1

      Many thanks 🙏🏻 I have also seen people saying this but at the same time I have even seen it in original vintage watch manuals saying to wind it. You also find a lot of the same people saying you should never quickset a date between 8-12 which is also not correct as that is a quickset feature.
      It is true that the gears on auto modules are more delicate than other gears but around 10 winds is totally fine and acceptable in my opinion as there is still not much tention pushed through the watch.

    • @karanjain5663
      @karanjain5663 Рік тому

      @@HorologyBiology Indeed the 8-12-8 date setting is the other sin in the watch community. I think the theory is that it damages the cannon pinion and/or the gear train. But as you point out, this is often touted as a workaround by manufacturers themselves (including Vostok). I wouldn't do it often nor for advancing a few days but I can't imagine it would cause damage when done slowly. Happy 2023 - we're all looking forward to your videos this year. Thank you for doing awesome work! :)

    Great and informative video, bro! 🙏🏻
    I got this info from my watchmaker when I started collecting vintage watches 3 years ago and I always wind my watches once a week and when you have like +50 of them it takes a wile but way worth it!
    I do have a question for you:
    - I always turn the automatics like 20-30 times if they’re going back to the box again but can you turn an automatic too much and harm the spring?

    • @HorologyBiology
      @HorologyBiology  Рік тому

      😂 why are you winding your watch 20 to 30 times when you’re putting it away back in a box 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️
      I think that’s too much for myself, technically the spring should just wind and wind as it slides within the barrel wall but I would logically think if it was constantly wound to the point for the spring to slide in the barrel it would create wear over time. Just my opinion

    • @hgger69
      @hgger69 Рік тому +1

      @@HorologyBiology That´s a recommendation from my watchmaker for keeping ALL of my watches running and the movement lubed, you can just wear one at the time you know....ok, maybe one on each arm then! 😆
      Ok,I follow...you mean when the spring is fully loaded it just move along and no tension is added, except for wear between the spring and barrel then?

    • @HorologyBiology
      @HorologyBiology  Рік тому

      Yeah, the springs are different to the ones that are in hand wind watches.

    Got one question though, why or how did you get hocked on Enicar watches as a brand ? Did you ever consider restoring the cases or hands of your vintage watches ?

    I had a Oris bc3 ETA and the manual says wind the watch before putting it on. I got the larger model years later which had a Selita 200 and the manual tells me to flop it about before putting it on, don’t wind it. I read there’s some fault in the selita that can damage the wheels on a manual wind. You heard anything on this?

    • @HorologyBiology
      @HorologyBiology  Рік тому +1

      Hey Colin, I have heard about this. Some Seikos from the 1970's didn't even have a manual wind option on their automatics. But then it is all about the build on the automatic module.
      I would't think it would be a fault with the Selita but I'm thinking it's more to cover them with people winding and winding etc. The fact remains if if has a hand winding option why would it not be functional? You see my point?

    I live like James Bond and go to bed (with a chick or not) wearing my watch. 😎
    I dunno what JB did, but I never hand wind an automatic watch just like I never change gears by hand while driving a car with automatic transmission even if it had a choice of manual stick. Technology is to be used.
    Just at the moment the Amplitude of my watch is at 273 degrees (Seiko NH36).
