After making the video I realized that the button has a magnet on the back and can easily stick to your refrigerator. Also, I didn't mention that the v3 hub won't work with local video but will still work with cloud cameras like Arlo. The v3 hub has less RAM and a smaller CPU than v2 but the SmartThings engineers say that local automation uses a fraction of the CPU and RAM so it shouldn't be an issue. I like the close proximity door sensor to detect that a door is fully closed, not just close to closed. I've machined precise adjustable mounts for the magnet to find the sweet spot for each door. A longer distance detection is going to have a smaller sweet spot.
Another really useful application would be to have a transducer to measure the pressure drop behind the HVAC filter. WIth this someone could get a message when the filter is ready for replacement. I have Dwyer manometers on my systems but a smart home system would be much more convenient. A new Aprilaire 5000 filter has 0.45 inches of water drop with a 2000 CFM (5 ton) system. I change them when the pressure drop approaches 1.00 inches of water. That change, from 0.45 to 1.00, drops my CFM from 2000 to about 1800, meaning I'm getting 10% less air to heat and cool my house. 200 cubic feet or air every minute can really make a difference. I'd like to see this type of thing as an addition to smart home usefulness. We've done about all we can do detecting doors and windows, measuring power, controlling lights and devices.
This reminds me of the old alarm system I had in the 70's with the contact sensors on every door and window . Must be some cool upgrades coming in the next 50 years

I think you got it wrong.... The multi-purpose sensors requirements are: Requirements SmartThings Hub, SmartThings Wifi, or compatible devices with SmartThings Hub functionality. Indoor use only. So I would expect that to work with V2 Hub?

I plan to use two temperature sensors in my HVAC air handler to measure the temperature split. With that I will have a constant monitor of my HVAC system health. Plus, with a bit of coding, report the duty cycle of my system, which again is a measure of the system health. (If it spends too much time heating or cooling then something is wrong.)
I'm starting to make my apartment a smart home, and I found a really good offer on a version 2 hub ($51), do you recommend buying it anyway or spend the extra bucks for the v3 ($116) (I live in chile and buying via amazon right now is not possible so I have to buy locally). I'm planning to use zigbee capable products to release my router and canalize them through the hub, like Xiaomi or another company that uses zigbee. I need your expertise!

(today) My concern is that it will not support custom device handlers and custom apps., also that it will not support "local" control with automation still completed when disconnected from the cloud/internet. Hey there! I know this video is old but does the multi purpose sensor work with Philips hue hub or do I need to specifically buy the SmartThings hub to make it work?
I got the new multipurpose sensor to use on the gate into my backyard. Without a mounting plate, I can't secure it as easily as the v2 sensor, so I'm going to have to use one of my older sensors outside instead (+ ziplock bag for waterproofing). I think it is a big mistake to get rid of the mounting plate, because it made it easier to pop out the sensor to change the battery. Even so, the $20 price tag can't be beat, so the v3 is still a better buy.
I havent bought into any sort of smart home or automation systems yet, and just found your channel so thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I'm debating between the wink2 or the smartthings (v2 or v3). I want to primarily use it as a security system (window/door sensors, motion sensors, and cameras) what do you think offers the best system for those needs first? I will probably eventually want some expandability and more automation in the future, which is why I'm considering a smart hub over a dedicated diy alarm system. Thoughts?

We did a comparison a while back and the main takeaways were that Wink was a little more simple getting started but SmartThings has many more possibilities for future automation. The community for SmartThings is awesome but the app can be a little confusing. As for the security system side of things, it will depend on if you want it to be professionally monitored. As for the basics, either one would be fine but I personally would go with SmartThings.

Unlike v2, v3 has to be linked through the new SmartThings app, but the supported devices shown in the app has no v3. bmbertges I haven't done a video on the rasberry pi yet. The raspberry pi is a pretty cool little device. It's basically a very small inexpensive computer that's about $35. I have done lots of fun little projects on them in the past but I haven't tried anything with SmartThings yet. In the video it's just using an application called espeak which will speak the words that are typed in the terminal and the command is played on startup.

That's really awful to remove all devices manually and add them again. There should be an assistant and only an upgrade button. Damn what a stupid idea. Hope they will fix it. I got more than 50 devices (include virtual devices) and arund 80 rules etc.
What is the simplest way to have my Ring.com Alarm monitor Samsung SmartThings v3 hub with 3 door, 1 motion. I have had them up for about 3 weeks and unsure if the door sensors are being monitor when Alexa is told to "Arm"? I have looked and the sensors status does not change. Thanks in advance. Your review was nicely presented, and good comments regarding the buttons and sensors. However, I must disagree with your use of the words "v3" and "upgrade" regarding the 2018 hub. To me, it is more like "v2 lite" having half the memory, less capability to handle camera video locally, and no battery backup. If someone were buying a new ST hub today, I'd tell them that unless they absolutely cannot connect it with wired Ethernet, they should get the v2. And right now, they are only $49 as a bonus.
Hi Kevin thanks for your comment. Yeah I agree that "upgrade to v3 hub" is probably a poor choice of words. I feel like the features removed in the v3 hub were not used as much but if someone was planning on handling cameras locally or battery backup then yes go with v2. A SmartThings engineer said that the largest local setups barely use any CPU and RAM in the v2 so v3 should have plenty of power for what's required. community.smartthings.com/t/should-i-wait-for-v3-hub-sth-eth-300/125573/28 The slightly extended range on v3 and being able to wirelessly place your v3 hub in a more central area in your home can only help as well.
I had read a lot of bad reviews about the wifi connectivity of the hub. I wonder if that is true. Also seems is recommended to use the ethernet connection vs the wifi (which I actually believe is probably true as I have two TVs and their wifi is very faulty)
I'm curious to hear if SmartThings have addressed the false alarming issue v2 motion had in the new v3? I use them to turn on lights in rooms. Have you seen those issues as well in the older v2 motions?
I experienced this problem with both new and older batteries. But you're not wrong SmartThings support said it was a battery issue. However, when I still have the issue after changing the battery. That answer sounds more like a cover up for a problemaic design to me.
What would you say is the difference between the two SmartThings apps? I find it ridiculous to have two but not sure which one to keep and which one to ditch.
The app situation is a mess with SmartThings right now. The new app is going to be more compatible with Samsung devices and will make some things a little easier to use. But of course, there will be a learning curve to figure everything out again. I will keep using the SmartThings Classic app until the new app is fully ready. I do have the new app to configure the button but that's all I use the new app for.

I am looking for a woreless battery powered external pir motion sensor that can trigger my external flood lights as a traditional sensor but I would like to create some routines to control my flood lights through a sonoff basic. Thanks! That's a good use case for it. There are other smart outlets that are compatible with SmartThings that would work as well. If you already had a smart outlet that wasn't compatible with SmartThings but was with IFTTT, you could use that too.
Guys PLEASE HELP: i bought a whole host of smartthings sensors and a hub. set it up and soon realised almost all of them lose connectivity in a large (concrete) home. (to be expected). I already understand i should buy zigbee power outlets to extend the zigbee range. But in South Africa, zigbee outlets are really hard to find. Wifi power outlets are much more common. Presently there are wifi access points throught the house. (AC Pro) so now im wondering if i should have gone with wifi based sensors instead of zigbee? Your thoughts?

I really need a way of clicking a smart button to activate a google goodnight as that currently "by voice" turns off all my lights, turns off my tv and sets my yale sync alarm to arm, i would like to then double press and that activates a google good morning, and a hold to activate all my lights on inc my security lights that are currently on tradfri sockets controlled with hue/google and hue outdoor motion sensors via a smartthings routine, if anyone knows if this can be done then please tell me, cheers.
I know this is an older video, but I'm hoping I can get some feedback. We are moving into a rental and I'm hoping to start up a smart home (smarter than nothing I guess as it is a 1980s home). I'm looking at smartthings due to your videos. I purchased the ring doorbell, the t9 thermostat, and will be doing the ring alarm system. Now for my smartthings question. Should I go V2 or v3? It would be nice for motion activated lighting and such. We are moving into Maryvale (since you are also in AZ, you may know of it), so anything motion activated and scheduled lighting can be helpful security wise. We also have a stand alone shed, so hoping to do motion activated for that too. Wondering if we should do a piece at a time. Dip our toes in. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
If you're getting a new hub, I would get v3 (unless you really want battery backup which is only on v2). You can look through the SmartThings website to see products that are compatible for your new hub: www.smartthings.com/products You may also want to make sure any products you get work with Alexa, since you'll be using that app for your security and doorbell. one sugestion try and figure out what your end goal will be, and then try and see what path suits you best, i went full google/nest and hue lights with a smartthings hub, and now adding sensors, im thinking smartthings over hue because i can get waterleak sensors and keep all sensors the same,
What's the range of the new hub for ZigBee/zwave devices? For example - can the hub be in the living room but be able to receive signals from a door sensor in my bedroom? EDIT: Excellent video BTW EDIT 2 : I live in Dubai and I have the connect home (mesh router + ZigBee/zwave) from Samsung but I'm not able to add any smart devices using the Samsung Connect app. Support says it's because smart home functionality is region locked and is not available in UAE. Thanks! The devices can be 130 feet away from the hub and about 50 to 100 feet between devices. So it should be able to reach and if it doesn't just have another device in-between the hub and the device to extend the signal range. nothing, lol. just trimmed down on cpu power, and allows for wifi connectivity instead of requiring it to be hardwired to your router being the two biggest differences. the V2 is actually the better hardware IMO.
I would get whatever one is less expensive when you are going to buy it. Unless battery backup and local video camera capability (not cloud-based cameras) are important to you then get v2. I've still been using the v3 hub wirelessly and it's been doing great.

Yes the great thing about SmartThings is that it's so flexible with stuff like that. For example, you can have the motion sensor turn on your lights from 8pm to 6 am and that same motion sensor alert you for motion if you are away. I did a video on SmartThings ideas that go over some of those things if you want to check it out.
Arrg I will need to do this with my 32+ physical devices when I Get the Wifi 3 pack .. Im just hoping ill be able to add some of my non normal ones. (like some buttons and devices (like my fan controls)
I see that they no longer say the multipurpose sensor can work as a garage door indicator. The old version was useless for that when it got cold. I also don't like how the outlet is so big you cannot use the other outlet.
I just double checked and you can use the new Multipurpose sensor as a garage door indicator. I can't comment on the cold since I live in Arizona right now. Yeah at 1:20 it seems like the SmartThings outlet is covering up the top one but it's just the camera angle. You can actually plug something on the top but if the SmartThings outlet is plugged in on the top outlet then it covers the bottom one.
Hi, I am new to SmartThings. I have a Samsung Galaxy S9+ that has the SmartThings app installed. Do I need a hub to be able to control/receive info from all these sensors? What is the protocol being used, how does it work?
Yes you need a SmartThings hub to connect your SmartThings app to the sensors. They use the ZigBee protocol. The SmartThings hub also uses Z-Wave so you can connect those devices as well.

Perhaps a tangent question, but I'm unsure where else to find the answer. :-) So The Smartthings Hub controls a lot of third party equipment like Philips Hue lighting. Does having a Smartthings Hub mean you do not need to spend the money on a Philips Hue Hub to be able to use Philips Hue light bulbs? Or do you end up needing to buy both?
@Gar Nelson yes you would need a Hue bridge. If you try and connect them directly to SmartThings it can mess up your ZigBee network. So you would need both for Hue. There are lights like the Sylvania Garden Spots that need a ZigBee hub and SmartThings will work good for those lights. It’s confusing.
Battery is draining fast in my version 3 multipurpose sensor on my living room window...any explanation as to why? It isn’t far from the Hub...15 feet...also, how do i open the battery compartment on the multipurpose sensor?
Hmmm that's strange. I haven't seen that happen for mine. To open the battery compartment just slide the top cover in the direction away from the smaller contact piece.
Smart Home Solver ok, thanks, wonder if I got a bum battery, sensor, or if the firmware is bad...I know last year there was an issue with firmware misreporting the battery...I also have the new sensors with the 2nd generation hub...not the newest one just released...
The problem with Samsungs new sensors reviewed here all are Zigbee. I prefer Z-wave it is much more reliable and you can build out a stronger network with it. There are some great 3rd party Z-wave and Z-wave plus sensors that work great with ST.
Hi Tom thanks for the comment. It's true the sensors from SmartThings are Zigbee and won't help strengthen the Z-Wave mesh network if you already have Z-Wave devices. I completely understand picking either one and sticking with it to make it really strong. I personally have both and it's been no problem using Z-Wave and Zigbee.
Same here - I have two houses - the only sensor problems I have had is with the older ST branded door window - plus as you noted the spotty performance of their older motion sensors. I got rid of all those and have a mix of non samsung branded ones now no issues. My 2 friends have had some issues both related with zigbee and location of the hub to the sensors and no zigbee repeaters. I like being able to do a Zwave network repair remotely also. Jeffrey Lewis you could use like a Dwyer series 1900 dP switch and the just connect the switch to something like the contacts on a water smart switch.

I still use Homeseer due to the fact that its control is done locally and not cloud-based. Wish others would follow suit.

Please please please tell me they improved the battery for their sensors. I hated the design for the battery compartment.
For whatever reason all prices went up. The Hub goes for well over $200 now and multipurpose sensor went up from $20 to $70.
Does the smart things outlet notify you when it is no longer running. Example washer and dryer or a deep freezer.

We did a comparison a while back and the main takeaways were that Wink was a little more simple getting started but SmartThings has many more possibilities for future automation. The community for SmartThings is awesome but the app can be a little confusing. As for the security system side of things, it will depend on if you want it to be professionally monitored. As for the basics, either one would be fine but I personally would go with SmartThings.

Hi, thank you for the video. I am living in Malaysia. I am wondering if I can use v3 outside of US. Unlike v2, v3 has to be linked through the new SmartThings app, but the supported devices shown in the app has no v3. According to update log, new app: "Support for the next generation SmartThings hub! (US only)". Any idea does it work or how to make it work for other country?

bmbertges I haven't done a video on the rasberry pi yet. The raspberry pi is a pretty cool little device. It's basically a very small inexpensive computer that's about $35. I have done lots of fun little projects on them in the past but I haven't tried anything with SmartThings yet. In the video it's just using an application called espeak which will speak the words that are typed in the terminal and the command is played on startup.

What is the simplest way to have my Ring.com Alarm monitor Samsung SmartThings v3 hub with 3 door, 1 motion. I have had them up for about 3 weeks and unsure if the door sensors are being monitor when Alexa is told to "Arm"? I have looked and the sensors status does not change. Thanks in advance. Your review was nicely presented, and good comments regarding the buttons and sensors. However, I must disagree with your use of the words "v3" and "upgrade" regarding the 2018 hub. To me, it is more like "v2 lite" having half the memory, less capability to handle camera video locally, and no battery backup. If someone were buying a new ST hub today, I'd tell them that unless they absolutely cannot connect it with wired Ethernet, they should get the v2. And right now, they are only $49 as a bonus.
Hi Kevin thanks for your comment. Yeah I agree that "upgrade to v3 hub" is probably a poor choice of words. I feel like the features removed in the v3 hub were not used as much but if someone was planning on handling cameras locally or battery backup then yes go with v2. A SmartThings engineer said that the largest local setups barely use any CPU and RAM in the v2 so v3 should have plenty of power for what's required. community.smartthings.com/t/should-i-wait-for-v3-hub-sth-eth-300/125573/28 The slightly extended range on v3 and being able to wirelessly place your v3 hub in a more central area in your home can only help as well.
Can smart things turn wifi led strip lighting on/off? What about Etekcity outlets?
I had read a lot of bad reviews about the wifi connectivity of the hub. I wonder if that is true. Also seems is recommended to use the ethernet connection vs the wifi (which I actually believe is probably true as I have two TVs and their wifi is very faulty)
I currently have V2 and was thinking about upgrading - do they still make you remove devices, routines, etc? uggg. maybe not.
I'm curious to hear if SmartThings have addressed the false alarming issue v2 motion had in the new v3? I use them to turn on lights in rooms. Have you seen those issues as well in the older v2 motions?
I experienced this problem with both new and older batteries. But you're not wrong SmartThings support said it was a battery issue. However, when I still have the issue after changing the battery. That answer sounds more like a cover up for a problemaic design to me.

What would you say is the difference between the two SmartThings apps? I find it ridiculous to have two but not sure which one to keep and which one to ditch.
The app situation is a mess with SmartThings right now. The new app is going to be more compatible with Samsung devices and will make some things a little easier to use. But of course, there will be a learning curve to figure everything out again. I will keep using the SmartThings Classic app until the new app is fully ready. I do have the new app to configure the button but that's all I use the new app for.

I am looking for a woreless battery powered external pir motion sensor that can trigger my external flood lights as a traditional sensor but I would like to create some routines to control my flood lights through a sonoff basic. Any idea's? The basic idea is for security purposes or to light up the surroundings at my arrival at night through a voice command or IFTT geofencing.

Great video BTW! Was wondering if the new multi sensor could be attached to a fishtank cabinet door and when you open the door the lights under the cabinet come on. Thanks! That's a good use case for it. There are other smart outlets that are compatible with SmartThings that would work as well. If you already had a smart outlet that wasn't compatible with SmartThings but was with IFTTT, you could use that too.

Guys PLEASE HELP: i bought a whole host of smartthings sensors and a hub. set it up and soon realised almost all of them lose connectivity in a large (concrete) home. (to be expected). I already understand i should buy zigbee power outlets to extend the zigbee range. But in South Africa, zigbee outlets are really hard to find. Wifi power outlets are much more common. Presently there are wifi access points throught the house. (AC Pro) so now im wondering if i should have gone with wifi based sensors instead of zigbee? Your thoughts?

So would you recommend v3 if you already have v2? Sounds like the v3 went back a few steps in compatibility. The only thing appealing Ive heard so far is that it can be used wirelessly. No nest or sonos compatibility troubles me

I really need a way of clicking a smart button to activate a google goodnight as that currently "by voice" turns off all my lights, turns off my tv and sets my yale sync alarm to arm, i would like to then double press and that activates a google good morning, and a hold to activate all my lights on inc my security lights that are currently on tradfri sockets controlled with hue/google and hue outdoor motion sensors via a smartthings routine, if anyone knows if this can be done then please tell me, cheers.

I know this is an older video, but I'm hoping I can get some feedback. We are moving into a rental and I'm hoping to start up a smart home (smarter than nothing I guess as it is a 1980s home). I'm looking at smartthings due to your videos. I purchased the ring doorbell, the t9 thermostat, and will be doing the ring alarm system. Now for my smartthings question. Should I go V2 or v3? It would be nice for motion activated lighting and such. We are moving into Maryvale (since you are also in AZ, you may know of it), so anything motion activated and scheduled lighting can be helpful security wise. We also have a stand alone shed, so hoping to do motion activated for that too. Wondering if we should do a piece at a time. Dip our toes in. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
If you're getting a new hub, I would get v3 (unless you really want battery backup which is only on v2). You can look through the SmartThings website to see products that are compatible for your new hub: www.smartthings.com/products You may also want to make sure any products you get work with Alexa, since you'll be using that app for your security and doorbell.

one sugestion try and figure out what your end goal will be, and then try and see what path suits you best, i went full google/nest and hue lights with a smartthings hub, and now adding sensors, im thinking smartthings over hue because i can get waterleak sensors and keep all sensors the same,
What's the range of the new hub for ZigBee/zwave devices? For example - can the hub be in the living room but be able to receive signals from a door sensor in my bedroom?

EDIT 2 : I live in Dubai and I have the connect home (mesh router + ZigBee/zwave) from Samsung but I'm not able to add any smart devices using the Samsung Connect app. Support says it's because smart home functionality is region locked and is not available in UAE.

Thanks! The devices can be 130 feet away from the hub and about 50 to 100 feet between devices. So it should be able to reach and if it doesn't just have another device in-between the hub and the device to extend the signal range. nothing, lol. just trimmed down on cpu power, and allows for wifi connectivity instead of requiring it to be hardwired to your router being the two biggest differences. the V2 is actually the better hardware IMO.

I would get whatever one is less expensive when you are going to buy it. Unless battery backup and local video camera capability (not cloud-based cameras) are important to you then get v2. I've still been using the v3 hub wirelessly and it's been doing great.

Yes the great thing about SmartThings is that it's so flexible with stuff like that. For example, you can have the motion sensor turn on your lights from 8pm to 6 am and that same motion sensor alert you for motion if you are away. I did a video on SmartThings ideas that go over some of those things if you want to check it out.
Arrg I will need to do this with my 32+ physical devices when I Get the Wifi 3 pack .. Im just hoping ill be able to add some of my non normal ones. (like some buttons and devices (like my fan controls)
I see that they no longer say the multipurpose sensor can work as a garage door indicator. The old version was useless for that when it got cold. I also don't like how the outlet is so big you cannot use the other outlet.
I just double checked and you can use the new Multipurpose sensor as a garage door indicator. I can't comment on the cold since I live in Arizona right now. Yeah at 1:20 it seems like the SmartThings outlet is covering up the top one but it's just the camera angle. You can actually plug something on the top but if the SmartThings outlet is plugged in on the top outlet then it covers the bottom one.
Hi, I am new to SmartThings. I have a Samsung Galaxy S9+ that has the SmartThings app installed. Do I need a hub to be able to control/receive info from all these sensors? What is the protocol being used, how does it work?
Yes you need a SmartThings hub to connect your SmartThings app to the sensors. They use the ZigBee protocol. The SmartThings hub also uses Z-Wave so you can connect those devices as well.

Perhaps a tangent question, but I'm unsure where else to find the answer. :-) So The Smartthings Hub controls a lot of third party equipment like Philips Hue lighting. Does having a Smartthings Hub mean you do not need to spend the money on a Philips Hue Hub to be able to use Philips Hue light bulbs? Or do you end up needing to buy both?
@Gar Nelson yes you would need a Hue bridge. If you try and connect them directly to SmartThings it can mess up your ZigBee network. So you would need both for Hue. There are lights like the Sylvania Garden Spots that need a ZigBee hub and SmartThings will work good for those lights. It’s confusing.

Battery is draining fast in my version 3 multipurpose sensor on my living room window...any explanation as to why? It isn’t far from the Hub...15 feet...also, how do i open the battery compartment on the multipurpose sensor?
Hmmm that's strange. I haven't seen that happen for mine. To open the battery compartment just slide the top cover in the direction away from the smaller contact piece.

The problem with Samsungs new sensors reviewed here all are Zigbee. I prefer Z-wave it is much more reliable and you can build out a stronger network with it. There are some great 3rd party Z-wave and Z-wave plus sensors that work great with ST.
Hi Tom thanks for the comment. It's true the sensors from SmartThings are Zigbee and won't help strengthen the Z-Wave mesh network if you already have Z-Wave devices. I completely understand picking either one and sticking with it to make it really strong. I personally have both and it's been no problem using Z-Wave and Zigbee.
Same here - I have two houses - the only sensor problems I have had is with the older ST branded door window - plus as you noted the spotty performance of their older motion sensors. I got rid of all those and have a mix of non samsung branded ones now no issues. My 2 friends have had some issues both related with zigbee and location of the hub to the sensors and no zigbee repeaters. I like being able to do a Zwave network repair remotely also. Thx for your videos and reviews.
YMMV - I have both Z-wave and Zigbee - they both have their strengths and weaknesses
