I've known this suite for years and must have heard at least a dozen recordings, yet until today I had no idea the sea songs movement existed! Why ever was it cut? It's fantastic!

I bought this 12'' Vinyl LP in the 1960's. It's still as pristine as the one illustrated. The best recording ever of this suite. If I remember right, the cover view is of the beautiful Malvern Hills in Worcestershire.

If anyone's interested in where the folk songs actually come from, you should watch my most recent video! I gathered together authentic recordings of each song (some of them made by Vaughan Williams in the early 1900s) and played them alongside the parts of this piece that they're used in.

The key theme in the third movement is played here by the clarinet; I have always loved that orchestration as opposed to the trumpet playing it which seems to me to miss the message of the piece. Loved this recording!

That's the trouble with trumpet and cornet... Nobody plays cornets anymore

Thank you for this wonderful upload. VW just rocks!! And what a great interpretation by Sir Adrian and the LSO. No idea when this was recorded (1960s?) but it must be one of, if not the best.

Much as I enjoy the marches, it's the Intermezzo that really grabs my attention. I'm assuming, as an English folk-song, its origin is the Northeast? I'm thinking of "bonny"....the devil is in the details!!!

Bonny--to me, has links to Scotland, as in 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' but I think it is wide spread over the British Isles.

Philip Croft, You're right about the word's Scottish associations but I'm fairly sure it is also a Geordie/NE England dialect word. Also, the composition's title refers to English, not British, folk songs. The word "bonny" is derived from the French, "bon/ bonne".....on and on the richness of language and folk culture goes!! "Bairn" is another word used in both Scottish and NE English dialects.

I stumbled upon this today... it shows the audio and geographical origins of each of the folk songs, juxtaposed with Williams' orchestrations. ua-cam.com/video/fjbFGSiMLVk/v-deo.html

In Kent, that tune is known as "The Cutty Wren". The song is thought by some to represent the human sacrifice of the Year King, or the symbolic substitute slaughter of the wren as "king of the birds" at the end of the year for similar purposes, and such songs are traditionally sung on Boxing Day (26 December), just after the winter solstice. 26 December is sometimes called St Stephen's Day or Wren Day. These rituals are discussed in The Golden Bough.
It is alternatively attributed to the English Peasants' Revolt of 1381, and the wren is supposed to be the young king Richard II, who is killed and fed to the poor ua-cam.com/video/j3UdQzlXeho/v-deo.html

@@maxmerry8470 we are a small country, with a long history of invasion from many european people, who brought their language and culture with them. Besides, in this instance, with close location to Scotland, there is bound to be influence, both ways.
