- Welcome back to Career Coaching with Krystina actor friends!! Today's topic is a HOT ITEM and, in the age of Corona, now a NECESSITY, SELF TAPING AT HOME!
In this vid I chat about what equipment to snag, where to place your reader, how to angle your shot, and more! Remember, there is NO right or only way to do ANYTHING in this crazy business, but this is the way that I do it, and I wanted to pass along the tricks and things I have learned on the way so take it or leave it! DISCLAIMER: THROW ALL OF THIS OUT THE WINDOW IF YOU GET SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS FROM CASTING ON HOW THEY WANT YOU TO TAPE. DO WHAT THEY SAY AND DO IT THEY WAY THEY WANT IT! But if they don’t say anything, my way is a good baseline!! Let's use this time to prepare ourselves to be the best, most competitive and ready actors we can be! Self Tapes are not going away any time soon, they were here before Corona, and will def be after so GET ON IT!

If they are only asking for slate and a cut from a song, should I look at the camera or slightly to the side (as if there were a reader with me) while I'm singing?
You can slate TO camera yes, but I would NOT sing your song looking into the camera, unless they specifically ask for that. The only time you want to ever look into the camera for taping is when you are speaking directly to casting (so a slate or if they ask you to tell them about yourself, etc.), or if the scene is like, you being a news reporter, or a vlogger or a breaking the 4th wall narrative or something. Everything else I would steer away from ever looking directly into camera, again, unless specifically asked!

I see that your mic is plugged into your computer not camera. what program is running to record the audio?
This was very helpful, thank you! Question: I notice the microphone is kind of far from you. So... that particular model allows you to set it out of camera range and it picks up the sound, almost like a boom mic? Do other mics do that, or that particular model of microphone has something about it (a setting, or it is a particular kind of mic) that allows that?
What should you do if you don’t or can’t have a reader ?
