The story is adapted from a play called The Peaceful Inn 1940 The film is inspired from an actual event The Welsh village of Cwmbach had only one bomb dropped on it by the Luftwaffe during the entire course of the war; it fell on a local inn and killed the landlord and his daughter
Some location shots were filmed in Cardiff though the main bulk of the film is shot at Barlynch Farm/St Nicholas' Priory in Somerset
The exterior and interior theatre shots at the beginning supposedly in Cardiff are actually The Richmond Theatre which opened in 1899 and is still running today

Daughter of Mervyn rather dubious Welsh accent in the film Played Mrs Banks in Mary Poppins 1964 and Myfanwy Price in Under Milkwood alongside Rachel Thomas
Guy Middleton 1906 - 1973
Trained and worked as a London stockbroker before becoming an actor later appeared in a recurring role on Hancock's Half Hour
Tom Walls 1883 - 1949
Walls also trained horses and the 1932 derby winner April The Fifth
Esmond Knight 1906 - 1987
Played the captain of the HMS Prince of Wales in Sink the Bismarck! (1960). Ironically, it was while serving aboard the real Prince of Wales during her fight with the Bismarck that he was injured in an explosion, resulting in the loss of one eye and almost losing the other. Father of Rosalind Knight who starred in Carry On Teacher and Gimme Gimme Gimme

Roland Pertwee 1885 - 1963
He was the father of Jon Pertwee and Michael Pertwee. He was the uncle of Bill Pertwee. He was the grandfather of Dariel Pertwee and Sean Pertwee.
Valerie White 1915 - 1975
Was originally cast as the Doxy in The Wicked Lady (1945) but fell ill
during shooting with appendicitis and the role was given to Jean Kent.
Richard Bird 1895 - 1979
Directed Sally Ann Howes and her father Bobby Howes in the West End Musical Paint Your Wagon Which was went out live on TV During one performance
Rachel Thomas 1905 - 1995
Altwen born Rachel appeared alongside Paul Robeson in Proud Valley in 1940 and was part of the original BBC Radio cast of Under Milk Wood. She appeared with Glynis Johns in Under Milk Wood in 1972 and in rep at Swansea Grand Theatre in 1987 in Arsenic and Old Lace
First saw this in the 1960s, now i am getting it for a birthday present (dvd) from a very good friend. A timeless movie with great sentiments.
Just watched this on 'Talking Pictures' (surely THE best TV station going !) and it's excellent, one of the best I've seen in years !. You can't beat the old films, they remind you of the days when neighbours knew their neighbours and everyone had manners !
