One way to predict the type of bond that forms between two elements is to compare the electronegativities of the elements. In general, large differences in electronegativity result in ionic bonds, while smaller differences result in covalent bonds.

My ex-husband used to spend his whole day doing, and understanding this stuff. He worked at Los Alamos as a Nuclear scientist but he never told me what he did, even though I wouldn't have understood it if he HAD told me.
He was one person who knew how to keep his mouth closed.
