This is vocally phenomenal; when he comes down through the octaves you can't hear any break in his voice at all; technically it should almost not be possible.
Ah Billy, you never disappointed, always pitch perfect vocals, and songs full of emotion, and art. Folk keep saying, 'Best thing to come out of Scotland' Truth is, you never left Scotland, and you still do us all proud. Can you imagine if Billy were to walk onto the X Factor stage today? Mr Cowell, this man embodied music, not like the utter shite, you parade before us, you money orientated arsehole. Billy, you are never forgotton. ;-)
This record always reminds me of the summer I left school and has stayed with me ever since. Rest in Peace Billy, God bless & thanks for all the great music.
michael wade They actually appeared on Top of the Pops with this so did get exposure despite not being in the top fourty.Just not as good as Sulk which is fantastic.
This makes me happy, this music reminds me who i really am, who i used to be. I need u to pray for me, for my soul, psique and body. love u people, GOD bless u all.
OMG !!!! Thank You for posting this! An Absolute Classic !! Still sounds Fresh as Ever! Incredible! R.I.P Billy, So Sadly Missed :o( The Legendary & Beautiful Billy Lives On. XXXXXXXX
@scottwebb Out of the many many many best things to come out of Scotland musically.Alan Rankine had left by this point and apart from this track i was somewhat dissapointed by this Lp partly as it didnt have the same extraordinary production values as Sulk.
@stereoloov I've always considered Perhaps a deeply flawed record. I've tried hard to like it but although there are some very good songs on it, overall it feels messy & lacking in direction. It also sounds for the most part, very much of its time which is to say dated. I think I probably feared the worst from the very 1st time I saw the cover. Billy's stylist really did him no favours! Of course following up the peerless Sulk was never going to be easy but this was never an Associates album.
Can't say much more than previous people except to say Billy's talent was far bigger than the acclaim he ever received in life! RIP Billy.
billy mackenzie..one of the greatest singers ever to come out of scotland..i think this is his greatest song...love it..

how this never got higher than 43 in the UK is CRIMINAL sublime indeed
Radio 1 stopped playing the associates after sulk. No airplay, few sales. Had album so didn't buy single

Love this. Absolutely adored Billy and The Associates and love to listen to his gorgeous voice. Much missed
A voice in a million !
The summer of 1984. This recalls so much and fires the flames of memories long asleep. Just Billy......miss you.
Gorgeous melting smooth voice, better than any singer ever.
Oh, and he also looked too good for words.
Have to say what a stunning song this- still- is.. beautifully crafted.
Fabulous !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Remember buying the single - still my favourite band
Amazing singer unbeatable ...And hid own individual style to boot..One of the best there ever was the quality of his voice sigh!
I always liked the little saxophone flourish at 4:10. I used to wait for that. such a cool song and vibe they created with this.
This really takes your breath away !!

Awesome talent =.sadly missed.
What a voice! Like no other.
Heart breatingly fantastic. What a man. When he died he took at least 25% of me with him.
Immense.
Goose pimples.
Great memories of greater days.
Wasn't he magnificent? This is a sublime experience.
was a good friend of his wee bro Jimmy RIP TO BOTH AND JOHN
if only he could have seen out those bad times then today would be his comeback. He's on a par with Leonard Cohen in my opinion
exactly that ^^
Michael Carlos absolutely
Very good music... This is my first time listening this one... And, I can see, they have got, an excellent production....
Well, hugs,
FS
another legend billy was a great singer and made great music
Sulk & Perhaps are two of the best albums of the '80's.Flawless.
GENIUS!!!

Perfect pop from the ASSOCIATES.Remember having this on 12 INCH vinyl. Doesnt seem like five minutes ago. Happy 2013 to all YOU TUBERS.
I love this song!!!
Love your description,
'i always smiled up at him in awe like he was some kind of pale angel'
and Love this song :-)
An inspiration
god bless you billy, if i was smart and as brave as you I would do the same as you did, Thank you for your genius
love him, and i,m a guy. wish you were still with us x
Thank you so much for posting this again! I was gutted when it was removed. x
Forgot what a beautifully ethereal voice Billy had. Alan`s electro backdrops cushion his voice sweetly. Top class. Billy much missed.
I think Alan had left The Associates before Perhaps was recorded.
Yes, this song has nothing to do with Alan.
lovely billy......
Dundee legend !!
miss ye pal x
Genius!
Think this was produced by Heaven 17's Martyn Ware?..great track.

tres jolie helmet - he wears
Can anyone tell me whether the high pitched singing at the end is Billy or a female backing singer?
Long shadows and the whippets in coats - was it cold that morning?
@dmdoombabe And didn't he have a truly beautiful smile!
What a question if it is Billy sure its him who can it be else.RIP mr. Mackenzie
Sweet synthpop track by Associates. I hear influences from The Human League and The Cure. Nice tune not more than that!
is that a serious question lol of course its BILLY! DOH!
