Many thanks for explaining how to use the volt meter in such a clear and understandable way. I have a relatively cheap one and despite reading the leaflet that came with it, I still didn't get it.
Now you've taught me the basics, I can now try and find the reason for the overnight draw on my 2001 WJ Jeep Grand Cherokee which has always been a problem. I've also watched your video on the Jeep cooling fan relay replacement which has given me the confidence to do that as my fan has just stopped working. I have now subscribed. Thanks again.

I just inherited a Fluke 77 from a retiring co-worker and this tutorial was exactly what I needed. I'd love to be an electronics expert, but seeing these common uses covers 99% of my expectations. Thanks!

I have this exact same multimeter, the Fluke 73-III. I lucked out on a good buy of a gently used one back 13 years ago. I just didn't want to spend $25 or less on a cheap feeling new multimeter and figured why not spend a little more than double that for a used one of much higher caliber? I'd known of the brand Fluke... so I researched the models and then combed eBay. Eventually the right auction came around. The yellow rubber case was cosmetically challenged, but the meter was in A- shape (just a few scratches on the plastic panel). Everything cleaned up great & I was relieved to find it accurate. I never really quite understood all the features, but your video helped clarify a lot. Thank you for doing this! :-)

That was amazing thank you, I have always wanted to learn how to use a multimeter properly but other videos I have watched were so confusing. Can't wait to go and have a play with it now I have a bit of knowledge on using it.

Great Video, so helpful when videos of actually USEFUL content is put out. So many do videos like this but with little to no useful content for the average person. I do electrical, nice to know about how to check for a drain on a car.

Great explanation! Learning how to use a multimeter was one of the best things I ever did. Fluke meters are great if you're a pro, and worth the money. But on a budget, there's a brand called AmeCal that makes a wide variety of multimeters that are just as accurate but a little cheaper. And, they sub-license their stuff to a bunch of other companies. One of those companies is Southwire, the house brand at Lowe's. Long story short: You can get a meter that's 99% as accurate as a Fluke with the same features for about 1/3 the cost at Lowe's.

I know this video is 4yo but I can’t thank you enough. I have a 04 Hayabusa that’s been killing batteries over night.

Little tip, in case you may not know. After cleaning up your Fluke DMM, you can actually flip it front-side in. The holster is designed to allow this. The face of your DMM is then fully protected when not in use.

I did not know that actually! Thank you for the tip!

@@MorFabIndustries You're welcome! Yeah, I didn't know it for the longest time. I downloaded the manual for my Fluke DMM and discovered the tip there. :-)

I had to fix my aunt's riding mower, and my $27 voltmeter quit working on DC. So she had a Fluke 21 meter in her closet, she gave it to me. I used to have one I bought in '96, left it on my dash one day, and the display quit working. I sold it for $100 to a guy who needed one and he fixed it. I have solar panels and twenty marine batteries on my power system, so I needed a good meter. Mine looks sort of like the one shown but it's got three holes in the bottom instead of four.

Oh, another useful thing multimeters do is measure impedance. This is great if you're replacing the speakers in your car and aren't sure whether to get 4Ω, 6Ω or 8Ω speakers. Set the multimeter to the Ohms (orΩ) setting and measure between the terminals of the speaker.

I always store my meters, with the cables in the V and COM positions.
If I use a meter for current measuring, I immediately switch it back to V and COM.

Hi, I liked the current leak test.
With that saying, what are the most common or how you go by finding some of them?
    Thanks l.

Awesome explanation on how to use a volt meter! You said something about an alternator crapping the bed and smoking everything. Does it actually smoke things? I only ask because I have an issue with my 01 dodge second gen cummins. I believe I have a parasitic draw, being that only after a few hours I have a real hard start or not enough juice to start, but I have had my vents smoke a little then it goes away. Not sure if it's related to an alternator or bad heater. The old girl drives pretty well but always dead. Batteries are 1 year old and still good. I'm going to do this draw test but just thought I'd ask about the alternator. Thanks take care

I have seen an alternator voltage regulator go bad and jump the voltage to 20+V but that doesnt happen often any longer. Def do a draw test. If its killing the batteries in only a couple hours, theres a serious draw. I would suspect an alternator draw issue or a starter solenoid hanging up.
