- The Hawai‘i Walls festival started in 2011 under the name Pow!Wow! Hawai‘i. Jasper Wong came back home to Hawai‘i from Hong Kong and wanted to create an event where artists from diverse backgrounds and communities could come together and create art in the public sphere.

Visited Honolulu in 2022, and devoted one day to walking around Kakaako viewing the art and taking pictures. Really it was good fun. When I lived there in the in the '70's it was not so nice and now it's unique and awesome. Didn't know this back story about the art so a big Mahalo!

Thank you for sharing this! As a hawaii born and raised now living in SF, I'm proud to see such creative avenues exist for the next generation. Realizing that you don't need to be in a big city to succeed in order to reinvest into your community is something I wish I knew sooner. So much appreciation for Pow! Wow! Hawaii + Jasper.
