What I found out about Picher, Oklahoma. More than a century of unrestricted subsurface excavation dangerously undermined most of Picher's town buildings and left giant piles of toxic metal-contaminated mine tailings (known as chat) heaped throughout the area. The discovery of the cave-in risks, groundwater contamination, and health effects associated with the chat piles and subsurface shafts resulted in the site being included in 1980 in the Tar Creek Superfund Site by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The state collaborated on mitigation and remediation measures, but a 1996 study found that 34% of the children in Picher suffered from lead poisoning due to these environmental effects, which could result in lifelong neurological problems.[4] Eventually the EPA and the state of Oklahoma agreed to a mandatory evacuation and buyout of the entire township. The similarly contaminated satellite towns of Treece, Kansas and Cardin, Oklahoma were included in the Tar Creek Superfund site.
LadyDragonsblood , sounds like an Erin Brockovich story . OMG...!!! Maybe that's where all of those two headed , four armed animals came from ?! YIKES...!!
And still the people refused to leave. It took a huge tornado that took out most of the town to force the buyout actually. The ground water that seeps out of the mines into the streams and into the lakes is a red or copper color and contains lead (and god knows what else) as well. They have semi-recently returned this land to a local native American tribe..Kinda in the sense of "Oh yeah, we did steal your land years ago. Let's give it back...Just a little worse for wear.." But hopefully, they'll be able to do something with it. The federal govt surely hasn't! There are several good short documentaries out there about Pitcher on UA-cam.
Great video! I loved the Precious Moments Chapel, so very beautiful! You're in my state now! Hoping one day that my husband and I can meet you and Adam! Safe travels!
I wanted to say that I'm enjoying seeing all the stops you make along Route 66 with you and Adam. I don't think it matters that someone else or many people have posted videos about the same locations. It's your perspective and approach that makes it different, fun, and interesting. I'd say the same thing to Adam too. It's not about the destination, but the journey....YOUR journey. So long as you're having fun, and to put it plainly who gives a f@#$ what anyone says or thinks. You're both lucky enough to travel, I can't so i envy you guys. Thanks for taking us/me along. Safe travels, Jacob.
Picher, OK still has residents and it has been given back to the Quapaw tribe. They were the ones that had it prior to all of the mining. It's an interesting area for Oklahoma history as well as American history.
pitcher was a lead mining town that died in the 90's when i was a kid, when the ground water and soil was contaminated... a few ppl still live there but not enough to make it a town again.. its mainly just weeds and ruins of a few buildings, most of the streets are gone or blocked off to cars.. the streets you can still navigate aren't worth the flat tire to go a couple of blocks just to have to turn around and go back the way you came, so, ya, if you wanna go to pitcher go for it but there's pretty much nothing left of it.. oh BTW fun fact, every square inch of the chapel was painted by Sam Butcher himself, the creator of precious moments figurines. and in reference to the walk around dolls, yes there used to be all the time in the 90's but its only around the holidays that you see the life sized walk around dolls, for instance the Christmas parade in Carthage used to have the dolls walk through but i haven't seen them walk through in quite some time but i have to admit i haven't gone to the Christmas parade in many years, so they may very well still bring them out on occasion..
Jacob, thanks to you and Adam for taking us along on a fantastic roadtrip. Love the way you each present the highlights your own way. The attractions are so enjoyable. I live in the northeast and there is nothing comparable. 😊🙂👌👌
Hi Carpet Bagger. a bit of trivia about Precious Moments and Sammy Butcher. In the late 60s or early 70s he painted the baptismal at my church in Redding Califonia. He is friends with the Pastor. Precious Moments was big in the 80s and 90s. I houst sat for a lady who collected what I want to say is upward of 1000s of the figurines. For her retirement...ehem... Well, Sammy also designed a precious moments youth ministry building at the same church in the 90s with huge figurines outside. It is still there. From what I here Mr Butcher is a very generous and obviously talented man who Loves the Lord. The chapel that you went to was a major pilgrimage spot in the 90s. Just some tidbits. Also , Just bought a t shirt for the first time for my husbands birthday this month. We enjoy your channel and adventures very much!
I've been there (the PM Chapel)! This is like the only place you've gone to that I've actually been to. Of course I only got to go because my Girl Scout troop went there, but hey, it's something! And as much as I hated the troop I was in (I was bullied the entire time), it did allow me to go places I wouldn't have gotten to go to otherwise.
Great video.. I enjoyed seeing the shoe trees..don't know why..just liked them. Thanks for sharing this. Now I wish I had post cars to send my old friends: Greetings ! From Uranus !
HI,Jacob. Here is a little information I found. PICHER, Okla. -- Thirty years and hundreds of millions of dollars since work began to clean up this former lead and zinc mining boomtown, progress is still being measured in inches or feet. That gauge is provided by the towering but slowly diminishing piles of “chat,” or tailings, that still loom over what is now a virtual ghost town. Picher, which in its heyday in the 1920’s boasted a population of nearly 20,000 people, no longer exists as a town. After being labeled one of the most polluted places in America by the EPA, declared a federal “Superfund” hazardous waste site, and also getting hit by a destructive tornado, it ceased municipal operations in 2009. That same year, Picher-Cardin High School, perhaps best known for its distinctive “Gorilla” mascot, graduated its last class of 11 students.
Awesome video of the Precious Moments museum Jacob! Thank you, can't imagine losing a child so young. Interesting that Kansas only has about 13 miles along with famous highway.
I love you & The Woo together, you guys rock! I watch both of your vids on this trip because they are truly different..... Also watch both of your vids when not on trip, subscribed to both
My mom has a vast collection of Precious Moments and my grandparents have been to the chapel. When they passed I wanted their Precious Moment chapel figurine.
Great vlog Jacob..... Pappy? WHAT WAS THAT! Uranus???? Very cool little town.... The whole Precious Moments scene was a little creepy, although heartfelt given the creators son untimely death. Thanks for hanging out today Jacob. Catch you on the next one..... Take care. Arthur Childs. Oak Harbor, WA. 🤨
7:30 I got such a sad feeling in that room when I visited. Apparently that’s where they had the casket and the artist spent a lot of time in that room mourning.
1. never drink the water in Picher, it's contaminated from years of mining after mining companies stole land from native americans then polluted for decades more before it was discovered and the town was evacuated. generations were harmed. 2. I am honored to know that you took us on a trip through Uranus, amazing~ I do hope you can come by and visit Mianus one day (in CT)
Picher is a ghost town and former city in Ottawa County, Oklahoma, United States. ... More than a century of unrestricted subsurface excavation dangerously undermined most of Picher's town buildings and left giant piles of toxic metal-contaminated mine tailings (known as chat) heaped throughout the area. State: Oklahoma And that's why it's abandoned. Another great video!
Well, the Precious Moments Chapel and Museum are about as butt-clenching terrifying as I would have imagined... And a hell of a lot sadder. Kinda like the Dog Chapel in VT. My mom always wanted to go, but I can be depressed just fine at home. Pirates in Uranus though... Sounds like a pain in uranus. Thanks man. :)
Sounds a bit like S. Clay Wilson's Captain Pissgums & his Perverted Pirates! Pirate lit ta put hair on yr chest, it were - perfect for a trip down Uranus' memory lane! Not comix for perusing whilst strolling thru the Precious Moments Chapel, unless covertly couched betwixt the covers of a complimentary hymnal.
Awesome! Loved the trip to Uranus!!! Soooo funny! I am glad you guys stopped there. Never stopped laughing! I was disappointed though that you didn't pick up some road fudge from Uranus! You guys keep on keeping on!
Pitcher is like Centralia, Pa a coal mining town this had fires burning under it along with sink holes. Very few residents left. Government bought them out razed the buildings.
I hit the like button. You probably don’t need it but I added my support to your channel...a long time ago. I always enjoy watching your content especially this Route 66 trip that I would like to take one day
Too funny! Hate taxidermy and Uranus made a complete ass of that poor bear, but I must say I was relieved they had trapped and killed "Ratboy" !!!! I hate those things! Give me the creeps!!!!! 😁💩👏
You guys are Almost to Chi-Town The Precious moments Chapel was beautiful and the abandoned town of Pitcher is an environmental warning to America.Keep on trucking.
Amber Pervez I was just thinking “I wonder if dan Bell did a documentary there” he did one on that town in Pennsylvania that was abandoned for similar reasons (minus the tornado)
Wahooooo. You guys were in my neck of the woods in Springfield about 40 miles from there. Eat at the steak and shake when I am on that side of town... Great work both of you 2 ,👍👍😎
Missouri is called that as they have lots of tourist areas .. and its them showing u things uv not seen before .. or something like that is whet i was told when i lived there... they do get snow its usually sparse and they close schools even for the tiniest amount of snow due to how hilly the terrain is in most areas
When he kept making the Uranus jokes and when it got to that sign that said "MISSING: A pair of balls", all I was thinking was "How has this video not been demonitized yet?"
The statue of the fireman with the baby is just heartbreaking, especially for those who know the story. A fitting tribute in any case.
That guy had such great responses..."Yep." Riveting.
Your not kidding. Ok, " you're".
yep...
His name should be "Crazy Legs: a man of many words"
Yup.
TennesseeMatt omg yup. Your comment is so underrated
Yep.
yep
Yep. 😂🤣😂🤣

Bonnie Brown I actually seriously thought that.....

Same here but I only lived in the St. Louis area for 5 years.
I know, so cool!
I was just there in October, a second visit, my first being in June of 2016. Class act.
My mom got me those special moments trains every year as a kid, seeing them all giant was SO weird!
The town of Uranus. Textbook definition of turning lemons into lemonade. Good video TCB. 👍
That cashier welcomed those people coming through the door, Welcome to Uranus....lol
Great video!

I dunno about that, but thanks. :)

The Chapel was beautiful, but that was the first time I heard the little statues were supposed to represent children that had passed.
I've been there (the PM Chapel)! This is like the only place you've gone to that I've actually been to. Of course I only got to go because my Girl Scout troop went there, but hey, it's something! Not gonna lie, I giggled at almost every Uranus joke lol
Also rather sweet to see the Precious Moments Cathedral, some beautiful artwork.

Kid takes rubber band off the squirrel's neck and pets squirrel "it's ok buddy, it's ok". Me, coffee spews from my nose. ☕️😤😤😤😤

7:30 I got such a sad feeling in that room when I visited. Apparently that’s where they had the casket and the artist spent a lot of time in that room mourning.
That was awesome
Kind of a sad story about Picher. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picher,_Oklahoma
Uranus however, seems to be thriving!
Thanks for showing us Uranus! 🤦🏻♀️🙋🏻 Have a safe trip🚙🚘⛽️🚦

Never been a big fan of precious moments but must admit that chapel is beautiful. Interesting shop. Keep Safe❤ Keep Well❤
Well I for one, am relieved you did not find Pappy in Uranus.

TheSWolfe oy, I love rags about seamen, nearly as much as I love me the jokes about seamen.
@@TheSWolfe i just legit read that in a foxy voice, gosh star wars
It sure seems like there’s a lot of fun to be had in Uranus
Hahaha crazy legg just "yup yup yup"
Awesome! Loved the trip to Uranus!!! Soooo funny! I am glad you guys stopped there. Never stopped laughing! I was disappointed though that you didn't pick up some road fudge from Uranus! You guys keep on keeping on!

Wow crazy legs man with a huge vocabulary
Anyone curious about Pitcher Ok should check out This is Dan Bell's short documentary.
Amber Pervez I was just thinking “I wonder if dan Bell did a documentary there” he did one on that town in Pennsylvania that was abandoned for similar reasons (minus the tornado)
One town had a Giant Porno Shop 🏪 and a mile down the road the next town had a Giant Anti-Porn Billboard...
Love the pappy reference and the hisssssssss!
All I could think of when you opened the door to the chapel that had the inscription was the Preacher in Poltergeist,🤣🤣🤣
Let me in!
one word- YUP!!!
Really enjoying this trip
i love it when you imitate the snake.
LOL the troll at the end...nice
I like this video too. I really like the drone video of the 66 movie drive in keep on going.
Ahhhhahahahaha I love Uranus! 😂
On Justin's 66 trip, he met a different guy, much more outgoing, who claimed that HE was the inspiration for Mater.
Mater was an amalgamation of the two
So I noticed Pappy wasn't in Uranus :(, perhaps he was hanging out by the fudge ??. Oh dear I hope you find him soon :'( xx
Wahooooo. You guys were in my neck of the woods in Springfield about 40 miles from there. Eat at the steak and shake when I am on that side of town... Great work both of you 2 ,👍👍😎
The Precious Moments place is super creepy.
14:03 is the first time I seen a beaver in Uranus.
Dan Bell has a video on his channel about Picher called The Most Toxic place in America. Great info on why the place was abandoned.
Wow the bad puns are really flying hand over fist in Uranus.
I heard crazy legs is part of inspiration for tow mater
Also that dude in Ok is inspiration also
I like how you and Adam are in the same places, but have a little different content. The town in Oklahoma was contaminated by mining waste.
You have to love those titles!
I never knew there was a Precious Moments theme park and it's hard to know for sure those creatures were real or fake.
Thanks for sharing Uranus 😂
Missouri is called that as they have lots of tourist areas .. and its them showing u things uv not seen before .. or something like that is whet i was told when i lived there... they do get snow its usually sparse and they close schools even for the tiniest amount of snow due to how hilly the terrain is

Another fun day on the Route 66 road trip
One of the saddest of all words...
Was.
