I enjoy the idea of what I call, forced savings accounts. A mortgage is an example.... every month you have money taken from your account to your investment, in this case, the property. But what you really should do is every time you are paid, transfer the money to your investments... do not wait for the end of the month. This will keep you in a stricter budget that you will not be tempted to break. I am in Canada, so a 1 year annual GIC gave me 5 percent plus guaranteed last year... and I was forced to wait. Purchasing index fund shares is a great example of forced savings also when they are bought without trying to time the market. Just keep buying and growing.
