  • Hello Folks! Join along with me as I take care of business on the ranch this week... from delivering beef to customers, buying a small set of registered heifers, and doctoring a bull calf that wasn't feeling well... and as usual, there is lots of POV horseback footage... It's all here on this week's episode of the Wyoming Way!

I just found your site, so I registered and joined your viewers. We are ranchers/irrigation farmers in Australia so I am interested in learning about the US and Canada cattle management watching several ranchers and farmers. While we had winters here we dont have the cold weather you have, so watching how ranchers over there manager the severe winters is very interesting. I see you loaded 5 head, you mentioned 4 heifers, could not see them but was there a young bull as well? Angus cattle where we are do not handle the climate, we run basically a Braham breeder herd, put Brangus bulls (lot of US genetics in our Brangus bulls) over heifers. Then we put Charolais bulls over cows. Charolais cross cattle do obtain a premium price as a rule. Anyway thanks for your vidoes and good luck during your severe winter.

Thanks for watching! I would be fascinated to see how the business works down under.... the fifth critter was a cow of mine with hoof rot that we had been doctoring at those corrals, and it was time for her to come home.

So glad I clicked on your channel, I loved this interesting video and am now going to watch your other videos. I’m in New Zealand and it’s interesting to see how other people live in other countries and the differences in animal husbandry. Best wishes for success on UA-cam in the future.

Hi. I saw your video on The Cowboy State Daily and just subscribed. My daughter goes to UW and loves it there. My wife and I drive from our home in Washington and spend a month there meandering through Wyoming (not Jackson...too expensive for us), southern Idaho, Montana and South Dakota. Thanks for your videos. They are fascinating. God bless you and your family.

We put the dams number on top. Below that we put the calfs number with a prefix for whatever year it is so we know how old the calf is, i.e., 4-…. Means born in 2024. And calf numbers are just sequential as far as when they are born. We will usually put a sire code in the calfs number as well, like 4XX21, would mean, born in 2024, out of sire “XX” and the 21st calf born… and we also use different color ear tags to signify different sire groups so you can easily see from a distance what their breeding is. Thanks for watching

If you were looking at EPD’s on prospective bulls(or semen), and carcass quality was similar, would you then look at calving ease since your cows are spread out on range? I mean as long as said said bulls didn’t give up too much on the weaning weight.
Keep up the good work and sharing it with us👌🏼

... yes sir, that's a good approach... the traits I prioritize here on our ranch are: milk, udder quality (i.e., how are that bulls' daughters' udders generally?) scrotal, carcass merit, calving ease, performance (WW, YW), disposition, and structure/confirmation... not necessarily in that order... also critters that have bloodlines that I like, thats a big one, almost more important than the numbers to me sometimes... so if two bulls are fairly comparable, I just pick the one that has an edge in one category... or use them both!

That was one of the most informative videos I've seen on UA-cam in a while! Really appreciate the detailed explanations. And really neat camera work! Thanks for the extra effort! Congrats on the registered heifers! I guess the question from there, maybe obvious answer, is would you breed them now with only a registered bull? If they messed around with a commercial bull that would confuse the blood line information clearly. If that's true, will you be running two separate herds now? That's a lot of questions! Perhaps you can follow-up in another video if you care to share those plans.

I do registered Jersey's to sell for small dairy / family milk cows so I have the additional work of having to halter break them and get them used to having their udders touched etc. and we look for different things on our data sheets than for registered beef but in the end registered cows sell for a lot more, beef or dairy, than unregistered stock. What was the fifth one in the trailer? Was that one registered too? You said you got four registered heifers but you put five head in the trailer so I was wondering what the deal with the fifth one was? I hope your bull gets to be feeling better quickly, sick cows in cold weather is no fun at all. Another great video! Thanks for showing all of this.

Cool! We have a brown swiss named LuLu… we love her… the 5th critter was a footrot cow that we’ve been working on, decided to take her back to my place so dad doesn’t have to keep feeding her for me! Thanks for watching

no added antibiotics... i.e., we only use antibiotics when the animal's health is at stake (if they are sick and need help). We do not use preventative antibiotics, which has at times been the custom in mass produced beef systems where cattle are in highly concentrated numbers and given medicated feed as a preventative measure. Hope this helps, thanks for watching

I am currently out of stock... local demand is through the roof and I flew through the beef I had in stock... However, we are expanding our business, and just recently purchased two 8x13 walk in freezers, and are going to dramatically increase the scale of our beef business. We are planning to be able to ship USDA certified, ranch-raised, grass-finished beef anywhere in the US by fall/winter of 2024. Please stay tuned and thank you for your interest! We are working on it!

So far we have just been supplying locally, and are sold out! Grass finished beef demand is soaring here... but we are expanding to be able to do that by summer/fall of 2024, so please stay tuned for updates! Our product is USDA certified, but we need more storage capacity to be able to have enough inventory on hand... so we just bought two 8x13 walk in freezers!
