  • Hogna carolinensis , egg sac production ?
Today I witnessed something I had not seen before in all my years keeping spiders?
Our adult female wolf spider was laying down silk to make an egg sac which we knew would be infertile as she has not been paired but what happens next is unusual .

That was cool, I agree with some of the other comments, she was probably telling, she's feeling so comfortable, she'd like a mate and raise a family in her forever home 😅
Very lucky you caught her and experienced something new, and could see what went on, with her having cleared the evidence out of the way.
No one else that I have come across on YT, are so punctual with their uploads. Your attention to detail and order is immaculate 😁
Thanks for sharing, really sweet bonus seeing the other happy residents 😊

I am afraid of spiders. But watching your videos I have learned to see them with different eyes. You are a great teacher and a wonderful communicator. Congratulations and thank you.

Your fear is understandable... However, remember - spiders will rarely bite anything that's too big for them to eat. Trust me - if you knew what 'critters' you're sharing your home with on a daily basis (even if it's spotlessly clean) - you'd never sleep again !

With all those beauties out in the light it proves you have failed to rap and tap at the enclosures often enough! You have not switched the lights on and off repeatedly. Worst of all you have not been rough every time you have to handle and feed them. You just don't bang on the shelves as you organize and feed. So by being a calm handler in a calm environment you have spoiled your little beasties. They just don't fear you and ms. camera lady. Your kind and considerate demeanor has allowed all the spiders to be fearless in their curiosity about you and camera lady. In this case success is measured in how frequently the spider folk stay out to see you visit.

Really great footage you've captured. Interesting that it was a wolf spider as I hear they care for their slings via piggy backing until they are big enough to do their own hunting. Perhaps these sort of protective parents do some practice in laying eggs before the real thing.

Hey you 2, great vid & very interesting my phidippus regius has just done the same thing n laid an eggsack (infertile never been paired) and instantly ate it , and I 100% agree we know nothing really about our spiders and are always learning something new about their behaviours and quirks, that's why I will never call myself an expert spider keeper despite how long I have been keeping because there is always something new to learn with spiders too much for one person to know it all and there isn't a day goes by I don't notice something I haven't before, much more entertaining and educational than tv imo 😊 great vid as always Dave, Camera Lady i hope you find a male for her 😉

I can see why this hobby is endlessly fascinating, even to a seasoned expert like yourself Dave , who has seen so much. There's always some new and surprising event/behaviour.
How can we possibly understand every thought, instinct or action of such complex creatures? They are bound to come 'off script' and do some unpredictable things we didn't expect from time to time - we can't possibly know it all.
I suspect your Wolf lady was having a practice run for reproduction, do you think maybe they all do? After all, this process of making an egg sac is critical to the survival of the next generation, to a female spider it couldn't be more important she gets it right! Fingers crossed you'll locate a mature male for her, she deserves to experience the real thing, and get the whole experience from start to successful finish.
Great piece of footage you got there, I was transfixed watching her make that all-important silk blanket. Seems she knew she had not laid any eggs, as she didn't see the process through but abandoned it to destroy the silk - and reabsorb its valuable nutrients. Utterly fascinating!
22:57 'Subfusca Lowland' - Wow what a beautiful spider! I'm clueless, but as soon as I saw the stunning geometric patterns I felt we hadn't seen this one before, and I'm right it's a newbie to the channel. Will you be breeding it? I just looked it up online, if it's the same breed it said they're native to India/Sri Lanka and typically live in tree trunks? It also said deforestation is reducing its numbers - I imagine this must be a serious issue for all spiders?
Thanks for another fantastic, top quality video Dave. Your UA-cam content achieves the Holy Grail in wildlife - education and entertainment - with aplomb! Best wishes to you and our lovely camera-lady, have a great week! XXX

Hello Dave and Camera Lady. First, I have to let my girly side out and say Eeeew! 🤢 That just didn’t seem appetising to me at all! 😂. Perhaps she is practicing in the hopes you will find her the male of her dreams. She did seem just a little discouraged when she crumpled up the mat. All teasing aside, that was very interesting to watch. Have you ever thought about maybe putting 24/7 cameras around the room to maybe catch things like this? I’m not sure what that would entail but you never know what you might see. With all of your spiders hanging out like that in the afternoon, does that mean they are hungry? I always love a good feeding video. Okay, I am just blathering on now so I will stop. Lovely, curious video. 🤨🧐. Thank you for starting my week off in such an interesting way. Take care of each other and have a good week.❤❤

Hi dave, I'm a complete and utter Arachnophobe, the only good spider, is a flat spider, those were my long held thoughts. But at 3am, I stumbled on your channel. And you, unlike just about everyone else, show a calm, gentle approach to spiders. And although you do show live feeding, it's not hyped up to a screaming pitch as the take down occurs.
Have now binge watched your entire channel, from your old spare bedroom, to the new beasty room. And, through you, have come to see a certain beauty in the lucky arachnids in your care.
Only thing I, and I dare sooo many more, is a shot of 'camera lady' now and then!
So, even though I am not cured of my phobia, I an now at least not of the idea that I should flatten every 8 leg animal I see.
Please keep up the excellent posts you make, theyhave made me appreciate the spider world, and who knows? I might even go to an insect fair, ow what ever they're called?
    Dai.

So, yes, I guess she‘s open to having visitors now. She definitely knows how her part works. The test run was successful. 👍

Also I think there’s an important message in what your saying. The only way we can ever truly understand these creatures is by watching and paying attention to what they do. It’s the only way we can ever truly understand the way they live which is why hobbyists and zoos are such an important place for learning and conservation. Great inspiration as always Dave!

Very very interesting. And also that spiders can make the different types of webbing material. Ty, for sharing.

I have no theories on the egg sac brunch, but your room looks absolutely AMAZEBALLS! all the matching naturalistic enclosures with chilled out banging spiders, so cool.

It's not every day you get to see a spider twerking. A little bit of music to go along with this and you could make one of the most hilarious youtube shorts ever. 🤣

Just as I was wishing you'd show The spiders that were out, you did! Thank you! Such an intriguing video. I hope you find a male. It will be interesting to see how she behaves with a real egg sac. Maybe it's hormonal.

Dave you are a peak scientist. You're love of and promotion of continual observation based learning is a joy to behold.
Also, please do more bonus end of video enclosure inspections. 🕷😍

DAVE!! Maybe they are out during the day in your beasty room because they have learned not to be scared and are comfortable because you and your wife are so gentle and calm with them all the time. When transferring them from one enclosure to another or when you are feeding them or even before and after you are pulling and egg sack. I don't know how well their eyesight is but they do feel vibrations from sound and the don't have much fear when you and your wife are around. I'm guessing you are the only ones going into the room ? Just a thought.

Absolutely fascinating Dave, we'll never really know why this occurs, especially given the fact, the spider 🕷 uses up an awful lot of energy, anyway Dave another super job by yourself and camera 📷 lady.

This was so interesting. I love that you caught this and shared it. I hope we figure out what this behavior means. There has to be a reason to go through all that. Maybe they produce extra web just for egglaying and if they don't remove it it can cause a blockage or something like that. I am so going to see if I can find anything on this behavior. Thanks for another awesome video. You guys are amazing! 🕷❤️

Hey everyone hey Dave I have a question I see you have space between your enclosures but have you ever seen your spiders tapping on there tank towards other spiders males or females and was it a aggressive tap of a different kinda tap
