    I have no words for how much this video helped me with improving my smashes. prior to watching this video, I hit fluke smashes which obviously isn't very good. after watching this video I have become crystal clear on how to hit a smash. I love how you people have step by step explained everything slowly for us learners to understand and internalize them. ' thank you' as a word can merely show my gratitude to you people. keep it up, guys!

Especially when you do some exersizes. Please reply to me if you would like to know more. I am willing to give my opion if you are interested.

    In general, it's a good summary for a 6min video so great job :D, but I personally find it missing some information esp for advanced portion. So i hope i can add my 2c worth.
    1. When to tighten grip: many amateurs tend to death grip throughout the smash from step 1, but grip should be tightened fully only before impact. Entire body is to be relaxed until point of impact
    2. Face the shuttle sideways, i.e. body 90deg to the net. This allows hip rotation in the smash for more power
    3. Usage of shoulder: Smashing only with arm without incorporating shoulder loses alot of power. The shoulder is used when the deltoids are facing front at end of a smash, i.e. turning 180deg.
    4. Wrist is maintained neutral at all times, no need to curl the wrist during impact to generate more power.
    5. Engaging the pectorals when smashing for extra power. From archer position (opened pecs), engage pecs at moment impact to end with both arms closer to body (closed pecs)
    6. Engaging the core for more power by bending backwards slightly and/or shifting weight to rear foot at ready position then snapping forward at point of impact.
    7. Most importantly, point of shuttlecock impact: Highest contact point doesn't mean shuttle is straight above. Contact of shuttle should be about one to two foot in front of the body, with arm about 20deg from the vertical.
    There are many more intricacies that one can only discover through more playing. #badmintonforever

    • @ShuttleLife
      @ShuttleLife  5 років тому +19

      Hey Kenny,
      Thanks a lot. Very nice comment!
      1) You are correct about the grip, but the grip should not be tightened up before impact, but at impact. That happens together with step 3 in the video (forearm rotation). Rotation in the forearm followed by tightening up the grip.
      2) The hip of course generates more power, but the hip rotation and body rotation is mainly used for the movement forward after you hit the shuttle. If you want to hit the shuttle and move fast to the net afterwards, sideways 90 degrees is recommended.
      3) You have to use the shoulder in the movement. Our video do have this aspect? But we didn't highlight the shoulder movement.
      4) Correct! It's all about the forearm for whiplash effect and power.
      5) What are you talking about? :-)
      6) That is correct and good point again. The power mainly comes from the forearm , the bod movement and weight transferring improves your movement after the stroke! :-)
      7) A misconception will be to hit the shuttle the highest point. It shouldnt be, but the feeling in your body will be this. Theoretically, it should not. If you do this 1-2-3 movement and tell people to hit at the highest point, and tell them to perform a smash. Your point will automatically happen! :-)
      Exactly!! :-D

    • @kennytanification
      @kennytanification 5 років тому +15

      @@ShuttleLife hey thanks for taking time to reply. Regarding point 5, it's not a common point people raise up, but I think it's important too. Pectorals are your big chest muscles. In the archer position or position 1 in your video, the chest muscles are extended with the non-dominant hand pointing at shuttle and dominant hand drawing the racket backwards. When smashing (from position 2 to position 3), some people tend to smash using only muscles only from the racket side. You can tell the chest muscles are not used in the smash when the non-dominant hand is "floppy" at the end of the smash. The correct technique will require the non-dominant hand drawn inwards with contraction of pectoral/chest muscles such as what is happening at 0:11 of your video.
      Anyway I think your smash techniques are all awesome, just as the shoulder movement all that, I was just trying to highlight these little things that might help someone improve their game slightly :D

    helpful video. the 1-2-3 technique is a good teaching tool. although the girl, like most girls, does not jump, her smash is effective because her pronation is precise and she hits the shuttle in front of her body. the male player seems to hit the shuttle over his head instead of in front of him and relies more on strength to hit the smash properly. so even though he has a nice balanced jump I do not think he presents a good example of how to smash. his jump would be much more effective if he rose to the shuttle earlier, before it got over his head. despite this criticism I still think this video is helpful, and i hope these players will continue to create helpful content

    An insightful video that I will take into account when playing. I definitely have a lot of training to do to get the muscle memory correct. In the heat of the moment I just revert to bad habits but hopefully through training and practice from your videos I can get better. I particularly liked your break downs of each action and focusing on one part before putting it all together. It helped me to understand the mechanics a bit better. I'll also bear in mind the bow and arrow analogy as it makes a lot of sense when playing. You take aim, draw your bow back then fire! Thanks for another great video. 😄🎾🏹🔥

    Basic body positioning, front/back legs, 45 degree (just like the best position in term of throwing thing), contact point of racquet/shuttle must be in front or never more than shoulder. End power is from wrist and not elbow as in tennis. When to use smash and recovery of position after doing smash. A good opponent can counter attack a smash if done not at the right positioning/placing or power. Play save smash placing for beginners.

    Great tips from the throwing, the numbers, touch drill, to the heavy/light racket work. Very helpful focus on components of the smash. I have to move kids/beginners from hips square to the net to turned about 45 degrees, then add the torso rotation to near 90 degrees. If they do not orient to clear space for the racket, no power. Once they get this, more can happen in the back-court. I am careful with plyometrics for kids but as long as the drop isn't too far, the hop is fun and helpful. Super job!

    im gonna say there's some mistakes, first even if you are at one place make the movement a bit so you don't forget it
    2- the girl when she smashes she lifts up one leg
    3.- the orange guy if u going to make that advanced smash, u should push up from the floor u just like turning ur legs, but u need to push up from floor
    4.- for both if u are smashing don't hit at your side, hit at front of u and next of your head
    5.- the girl when she smashes she lowers her racket so much and if they place a shuttle there again she won't hit it or she will do it with difficult

    well I didn't know that before! Thanks for that! I was wondering how to smash down when the wrist cannot be flexed down enough to hit it down. What he describes is a totally different movement and far more effective.

      Very pleased to hear that. A general misunderstanding is the use of the wrist instead of the forearm

    Hi, I was wondering if the grip for the smash was like continental grip in tennis. Does playing tennis previously give a future badminton player an advantage? Is the smash a tennis overhead? I would appreciate a reply, thanks!

    • @ShuttleLife
      @ShuttleLife  5 років тому

      The problem comparing tennis and badminton is lying in the technique. In badminton the power and speed is happening in the forearm and the angle is in the fingers.
      Your body is prepared for badminton and you will probably not get into any injuries while practising the smash 😊

    Another tip don't rely on power. Technique/stroke is key to this. When you are confident with the technique/stroke, start to add more power.

    • @ShuttleLife
      @ShuttleLife  5 років тому

      Exactly! Focus on fundamentals on controlled circumstances - then begin to add up more power!

    You are a 👍great coach I've ever met. I am also a badminton Player, I am just 12. And I always play with 2 adults for warm ups. But my dad and his friend ( the two adult ) saw me jump smash In the wrong way. After watching this video, I did improve. Also I also have a training everyday. Mon to Friday. But the coach can't teach me well bc there are lots of students that he's teaching and cant consantrate. Also, u don't rly need to read this essay. Just say it in a shorter way, u are a great coach and have a good idea to improve us by a very interesting way.
    That's all from me, I hope u will reply ;)

    I wonder why Women dont do jump smash. Japanese XD player Arisa Higashino is an excellent jump smasher. I would like to know why women stay on the ground and smash.
    Just a query.

    • @ShuttleLife
      @ShuttleLife  5 років тому +1

      That is very interesting! :-) Hope somebody else helps here.
      Higashino is very good at this technique! :D

    • @khuo0219
      @khuo0219 5 років тому

      It is not that they cannot jump smash, but women have weaker calf muscles than men so they have harder time getting to the next shot after they land.
      In singles, He bingjiao and PV Sindhu use the technique more than others though only to finish a point as opposed to create an open as in men's games.
      I hope that helps and I certainly would like to see more jump smashing in women's games.
