Arkwright is not a 4-hour game for us. We get Waterframe it done in 2 hours or less. Spinning Jenny isn't very satisfying for all the reasons you mentioned and it feels like a lobotomized version of the full game. I feel like that version was created only to teach the basic concepts.
Finally a game in which Richard doesn't say this is a top 10 game...

We played 3p Waterframe (full) game and done in 3 hours. V. enjoyable!
Love this game, so much variety with the Waterframe setup.

This game doesn't take that long. Waterframe is 4 hours max, even with ponderous players like myself.
I also find it interesting that you think this is too long and heavy, but Viard and Splotter games are not.

Yes, that comment threw me way off. I was like, but shipyards! I don't think you can endorse Die Werft and then call another economic sim dry, like ever...
When I first saw the board layout, I thought "rahdo must be in heaven right now."
If 4 hours is too long for you, then you're missing out on many of the greatest games ever made.
2 player Spinning Jenny is about 40 minute game.
I got to play this at Origins and we played two player water frame in just under 2 hours. Actually goes pretty fast when you only have two people. I really enjoyed this game and the options you have for making your own way to make, promote and sell items. =o) Nice to see the run though though so when I finally get a copy I can refresh before playing.

I'd agree. I've done my own mechanical runthrough of Spinning Jenny 2-player and it took two hours. That's me basically doing what Rahdo does, making all the decisions and reviewing the rules. Water Frame took 3.5. I'm confident that once you know the game SJ is 25-30m/player and WF is 60m/player.
I love the imagery of the grey workers all lined up uniform like ready to head into the coal face or whatever lol

Well, now I've gone and done it. Watched this last week and, by coincidence, ran across a ding-and-dent copy available cheap on eBay. It arrived yesterday and I punched it today and will start trying to find other brave souls to get it to the table with. :)

Reviewing Arkwright based on Spinning Jenny is liked reviewing a movie with nothing but the trailer- the rules clearly state it as a tutorial. Your most dishonest video to date.
i think you might want to go back and watch what i said a bit more closely...
you did say that you thought it would be grate in the fuel 6 hour version sounded good but you also acted like all the cool stuff not being available in the simple version was a bad thing this is what Cur might be tipping his hat. but dishonest might be a bit harsh.
Don't come to Rahdo looking for long games....
He is a relative newbie in the game market. I cut my teeth on the Avalon Hill and SPI stuff, so 4 hours is nothing, but the trend now is short.
He did a good job on the short game. The long game would be even less appealing to him. Know your reviewer!
+Brad Andrews yea... Which made the idea of this run through by him so exciting- every other title that has beg/adv mode (quadrapolus being the last one that jumps to mind) he does the run through of the adv mode and just noting the 'gateway' version- not this year with him however for whatever reason... I guess we shld be lucky to get an extended play at all- no matter how little effort put into it.
'Knowing the reviewer' is what fueled the excitement for this runthrough; the disingenuous lack of effort is what made it so disappointing
