Congratulations brother!!!! Can’t wait to follow this project. We just started restoration on my new 15T standard-gauge Porter (no videos yet), I’m blown away that UA-cam will see the restoration of all 3 major Tank loco manufacturers with this Vulcan, the Davenports with @Wreck2Restored, and our Porter!! These saddle tank locos are such sweethearts. All the best to you guys & will be stoked for the next episode. Cheers!! 🔥
Thank you for the support, very cool indeed that all of this has convened at the same time. I’ll attach my email here so that we can exchange any troubles we might have along the way! ethanhartyblacksmith@gmail.com
Excellent video Ethan! I'm very excited to follow your project! It will certainly be fascinating to see the differences between the three manufacturers and how they accomplished the same task! Best of luck to both of you on your projects, I can't wait for all the amazing restoration content! W2R
Interesting Ethan, not only do we share a Surname but also an infatuation with old engineering, I look forward to the journey of this project, Seasons greetings to you and your family from possible distant cousins in New Zealand.
Hello fellow Albertan! Always nice to see vintage iron being saved and restored! I love anything steam powered so it's really cool you managed to get your hands on an old loco! Good luck!
Great summary, as an owner of both steam and diesel locomotives (2ft gauge) your experience in purchasing and then moving your loco is the same as us. I look forward to following your journey. We are at the same stage with our steam locos.
Best of your luck with your efforts man so many people I see now in the 21th century restoring and operating steam locomotives. The best idea for you is collab with as many other railroaders especially steam locomotive operators as you can the more are united the more will be able to come back from years of rusting away. Learn from them and get a feel for what it will be like when your engine is back under it's own power. Cheers to you and Merry Christmas to you and your family Ethan
If you're not aware, the channel Vintage Machinery has several videos where he has worked on one of these Vulcan 0-4-0's, Including dismantling and reassembly when having the boiler replaced.
Yes steam is such a great addiction congratulations on your purchase. i have a 5th scale model traction engine and friends have full size taction engines, i am into forging and knife making as well and have a 2CWT Massey Inslides power hammer.
OK, now there are two youtubers in Canada restoring a total of three 0-4-0 saddle tankers. Really like the idea of a wooden cab. Yeah, I'll stick around.
I think if you’re keeping it at your place, have a steam port take off. So you could hook up to a steam power hammer that doesn’t need any more explanation lol. And if you take it to shows hook up to steam corn. Sells like crazy recoup some operating / repair maintenance costs. Have fun with that project. Your family will never forget it!
I'll recommend some heritage Railways for her to run on. 1: Alberta Prairie Railway , 2: Kettle Valley Railway , 3: Railway Museum of BC , 4: Alberta Railway Museum , 5: Waterloo Central Railway , 6: Expo Rail , 7: Southern Prairie Railway , 8: Eastend Scenic Rail Tours , 9: Train of Charlevoix , :10 Orford Express , 11: Port Stanley Terminal Railway , 12: Agawa Canyon Tour Train.
Exciting times ahead! I really admire and support folks like you and others fixing up these full size (narrow gauge, etc) engines. If you pop over to my channel you’ll see my little 3 3/4 Scale Porter I happily tote around to clubs, etc. Steaming is not a hobby, it’s an addiction! A ritual of the elements, and I’m glad to see you’re carrying yet another torch!
Incredible! If you ever need help doing grunt work or engine work i would be happy to assist as im just here in central Alberta! Keep up the amazing work.
She’s a cutie! Also is it just me or are people starting to buy small steamers and post their restorations? First Wreck2restored (hope I’m getting the name right) now this lad. Anyway, good luck restoring the lil guy!
Oh, and when ya finished restoring the gal (which wont be any time soon) bring it down south to the TVRM or SRM, would love to see some steam down here! (We only got one publicly accessible operational steamer here in Georgia :[ )
Potentially dumb question if you have time: since we don't really use steam engines in the modern world, how do they have the engineers to do the certification and calculations? Other industries have had real problems with brain drain, even for example products from the recent past like the 1980s have had problems because everyone involved at that time has retired.Much less technology from so far back.
Steam boilers are still everywhere. Most of your power generation is via coal burning in a boiler or natural gas. There are hundreds of thousands of boilers just in the US, they may not be on trains but it is the same concept and thus engineers would be available to run the numbers.
So so cool!!! Can’t wait to see how it progresses. Let me know if you ever need more hands or any parts made 🙏🏻
Thank you Alec!
I was going to tag you in this but I see you’ve beat me to it lmao
One of the UA-cam resto kings of wayward equipment in the house!!
Congratulations Ethan! Can't wait to see whats to come!
Thank you Tim!

All the best, in your project, your "can do" outlook is refreshing, this is the spirit that makes people and countries great!
I can tell that the little locomotive just wants to run, fix him up well and give him a good run.

Power engineer class 4
where will you run it after completion?
What about an 0-2-2 or a 2-2-0?
She’s a cutie! Also is it just me or are people starting to buy small steamers and post their restorations? First Wreck2restored (hope I’m getting the name right) now this lad. Anyway, good luck restoring the lil guy!

Interesting, . . . .
should run a power hammer

There is also plenty of written material. It’s not all on the internet. There are books out there that still exist with calculations in them.
