All about oil-the right quality and quantity | Dr. Shashank Joshi | The Interview

    If you think olive oil is better than vegetable oils, you’re under western influence, says Dr. Shashank Joshi, former president of API and a renowned academician, during an interview with Dr. H.K. Chopra, President CSI ( Cardiological Society of India).
    “While olive oil may be good for the Mediterranean and Southern European population, it is not recommended for Indians.”
    “The ideal cooking oil has a balance of saturated fat, monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), which cannot be found in a single vegetable oil. There is scientific evidence from the National Institute of Nutrition and ICMR to show that a blend of oils is ideal for use, because blending two oils gives you the properties of both with a synergy.” A 70:30 blend of rice barn oil and safflower oil is ideal, adds Dr. Joshi. The message is to cook in less oil and use the right blend of oil. For a healthy lifestyle, supplement the right use of oil with good sleep, exercise and a stress-free mind.
    “The reason behind ever-increasing incidence of heart disease in India is the sudden affluence in the population due to rapid urbanization, which has lead to people living a sedentary lifestyle.” In citing major problems with our food habits, Dr. Joshi talks about the fast food culture, which has taken the whole country hostage. Our papads, pickles and chutneys which contain loads of invisible salt not only make us the salt capital of the world but also the capital of hypertension and diabetes. Dr. Joshi also emphasizes the importance of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in eliminating various discrepancies like white-coat effect and BP variability. In another parallel line of discussion, Dr. Joshi prefers ACE inhibitors over ARBs because ARBs are said to have an increased incidence of myocardial infraction and should therefore be used only when there is intolerance to ACE inhibitors.

    The speaker vaguely mentioned trials around blended oils. But I really missed the fact if he mentioned the names of trials and if those trials were funded by oil companies.
