    I'm a biotech equity research associate. This is 100% accurate, especially during peak earnings

    Underrated channel, thanks for the insight Kevin - looking forward to future videos. Would definitely be interested on what the interview process/breaking into ER is like, how career progression looks, and exit Opps too.

    What is your mental model for staying in the sell-side vs. moving over to the buy-side, e.g. joining a fund? Is there an adverse selection effect for analysts who do not eventually move over since one would assume the best analysts would be putting their money where their mouth is.

    • @henrychien4
      @henrychien4  3 місяці тому +2

      they're different roles that work together, I've seen buy-side to move to sell-side, as well as sell-side to buy-side. I don't think there's adverse selection effect, plenty of sell-side analysts (and buy-side) get paid very well

    If you don’t go to a target school is it possible to break into equity research? Do you have to have a cfa to break in?

    • @henrychien4
      @henrychien4  2 місяці тому +3

      Yes! Don't let your school influence your future potential, that's very silly. And no CFA is not required - you just need to build the foundational skills and ability to communicate it!

    • @eddierosario1537
      @eddierosario1537 2 місяці тому

      @@henrychien4 Thank you for your reply I thought that in order to break in we need to go to a target school that’s what has been stopping me. Thank god about the cfa as well I heard it’s hard exam to pass and I thought that was a requirement. Is there like a course where someone can take to learn the necessary skills to break into equity research?

    So, if I got it right, you can spend 20 minutes analyzing company, and based on 20 minutes, your guys spread information to buy/sell?

    • @henrychien4
      @henrychien4  3 місяці тому +6

      for traders, yes but that's just the stock reaction to the release (1-2 days), the more detailed buy/sell for next few months, might take 2-3 hours or more, post earnings, but remember we're working with a base of knowledge about the company & industry

    Would you say this career would be incompatible with someone that has to prayer 5 times a day (Muslim, can pray in office, but Friday congregational prayers)?

    • @henrychien4
      @henrychien4  День тому

      totally compatible - I mean it takes like 1-2 minutes to pray I'm assuming? I mean we have to go the bathrom we can't be glued to the screens all day haha. So yes - especially because there's a rhythm to markets that you can anticipate quiet vs. busy periods, just got to be strategic with time. There's the no interest thing though with Sharia law though which is technically incompatible but there's obviously Islamic finance that exists.

    • @bigbeard6676
      @bigbeard6676 День тому

      @@henrychien4 Thank you for the insight, Henry. Yes, 5-6 minutes of prayer within a time slot so planning time would be possible. I did not think the interest aspect would be forbidden in ER, since we are basically making investment recommendations and not directly involved in interest-backed loans. Now if there is direct involvement in something like debt-based capital, then yes it would be better to avoid it. Am I incorrect in assuming there would be no such involvement?

    • @henrychien4
      @henrychien4  День тому

      @@bigbeard6676 yes correct if its stock recommendation, its equity, not debt. No interest unless its a preferred equity but that's not that common for equity research.
