  • How can we evolve the web for a better future? Has the web become a mature platform -- or are we still in the early days of knowing what it can do and what role it might have in our lives? Just as “social/local/mobile” once did, what are the new trends -- like crypto and blockchain networks and commerce everywhere -- that might converge into new products and experiences?
Chris Dixon (general partner at a16z and co-lead of the a16z crypto fund) discusses all things internet with Jonah Peretti (founder and CEO of BuzzFeed). Their conversation ranges from the early days of the web to the way innovation happens (what Chris calls “outside-in vs inside-out”) to the promise of a community-owned and operated internet, and more.
Together they explore the possibilities that could co-evolve and converge are we enter into the next era of the web, and they share how we might not be quite as far removed from the “wild west days” of the internet as we imagined.

I agree with Darth Vader! :) ..but seriously, Chris is a brilliant mind, I've always enjoyed his viewpoint, he has contributed a lot during my 'startup career'.

Agreed with Chris Dixon about decentralization of social media. This is exactly what we do at Subsocial - an open protocol built on Substrate blockchain framework and IPFS.

Interesting talk. I think the internet and the convergence of the different trends that were mentioned (blockchain, cloud, AI, VR) will surprise us in nice ways (of course, there will be a hefty dose of unpleasant surprises too.) 😊
As far as the decentralization of news goes and all the worry about fake news and troublesome groups, I think we'll see something similar to the Wikipedia example: "something bad for fifteen minutes, something good for five years." We're smart people. Yes, we can be easily fooled, but most of us don't stay fooled for long. We learn and get smarter. Until the next thing that can fool us comes along. It's a never ending cycle. 😊

One important thing they left out. The internet nowadays benefits the third world more than the first world and it benefits the East more so than the West.

Interesting info about Ford, didn't know he was such a 'hacker' type. Btw, that buzz feed guy was talking way too much, I learned more about his views than Dixon's.

「People are disillusioned is they feel this sense of like they're not part of it they aren't included and the business model they feel like is extractive. 」so new products with new business model should avoid this.

He kept cutting the guest so many times, he was always gonna say something very insightful and then the moderator keeps cutting him. I wish I could get those insights. I listened to this talk now twice and I don't get anything insightful from the guest cause it isn't complete.
