  • Musician and academic Mykaell Riley arrives at Interview City ready to tell it like it is. One of the original members of Steel Pulse as well as a successful writer, producer and performer for over 25 years, he’s currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Westminster and Director of the Bass Culture Research Unit, having recently curated the recent “Bass Culture” exhibition. Articulate and unapologetic in his advocacy, Mykaell talks openly about his experience of being both Black and British, and makes the case for a musical culture that continues to be seriously underappreciated and marginalized. Asking for answers is the writer and critic Paul Morley.

Unfamiliar stories, trenchant opinion, and missing perspectives. That’s what we’re all about in Interview City. Welcomed to the City will be a series of individuals that we know, like and admire. Those who have accomplished things and have something to say about both the current and former state of play. We’ll have ruminations, digressions, revelations and provocations, all teased out by the City’s own writer in residence, the cultural commentator and provocateur Paul Morley.

Very informative. The hard part of listening to this and other important "Palm Interviews" are the "Commercials..." Just when Mykaell Riley giving an important point a commercial would interrupt his thought which seems like an "Orchestrated Knowledge Drain..." Is UA-cam or anyone trying to stop the viewer from learning? I watch these videos to learn, not to receive a plug about showcasing a totally different genre of art. I understand that one has to make money, but what about the people that cannot afford to buy a brand new car or learn a UA-cam hack that is being plugged into our brains. Please someone look into this because this is not good. Maybe it's best that I go completely back to paperback books or understand what has got me and others to move up or enhance our lives is that we have it in ourselves. Sorry about my "Rant" on this interview but this is too much and maybe I will stop watching the only social media program I have.
