Redline Tango By John Mackey

  • This great piece, originally written by the composer for orchestra, was John Mackey's first work for concert band. The piece opens with a driving and virtuosic motive that gradually builds in intensity. After the first climax, the second theme of the piece enters, the "tango", mostly dominated by the clarinet section. The "tango" then moves into a restatement of the opening theme, albeit a "redder" version, in the composer's own words. The piece concludes with a final sampling of the "tango" theme and then a finishing bang.
Performed by the University of Kansas Wind Ensemble.

that moment when you realize john mackey has never played an instrument in his life and thats why he writes in weird time signatures and satan keys. yet his music somehow sounds badass

Nah, that doesn't make much sense to me, why would that be the case? He is a genius, I don't understand why not playing an instrument would lead you to write more complicated music, he knows very well what he's doing, I can guarantee you that, and he probably has 0 issue with any of that solphege and he writes music for the appropriate level, he expects musicians to handle it well as well.
