Good review, your bad list is mostly bike maintenance... 1- dropper issue, after wiping the bike use some suspension spray on the dropper post. 2- Spongy brake- depending on the conditions you may have not been modulating and they overheated or your body position is too far forward. You may need the reservoirs top off or a fine adjustment. 3- derailleur issues- probably a limit screw+cable stretch issue. 4- You could run a higher pressure on the road, use a different tire with a different compound, or get a set of 29er’s? 5- bike rack issue- use a hitch mounted bike rack? 6- Pedals- does anyone actually use the pedals that come with a bike? Lol Also, scratches- it’s a more recent Trek paint issue, my older Treks still look pristine
The derailuer issue probably has to do with your limit screw. There are two screws that limit how far up and down the derailuer can move. Adjust the upper one and you should be fine.
@@harrywilliams5859 I just upgraded from a marlin 5 to the Roscoe 6. The marlin has better acceleration and top speed on pavement but the Roscoe is superior on trails and climbing trails and pavement too. The thicker tires build momentum once you get them going.

Great video. I agree with the bad points. I have a Roscoe 6 2021 for commuting to work, It's great on the trails but the lack of top speed is so frustrating!
@@Miri50 My wife managed to bend hers fairly quickly. I'm starting to think we might need to upgrade the derailleurs and cassette pretty soon. It used to be so smooth but even mine, which is not bent, is starting to make noise. Have to figure out what will fit best on this setup.
Thank you for a great review. I am looking into getting one of these bike and to have a review done by someone who is also on the Isle of Man that is great.
I've got the 2020 version of this bike and it's nearly identical. I've put it through it's paces in AZ, Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. It's performed very well in most circumstances. When I got it I was weighing in around 285 lbs. This is a tad heavy for this bike but it handled it pretty well. I'm relatively new so I'm not doing jumps on it... yet... but by the time I do, I should be nearly half the man I started out on it as I'm over 20lbs lighter thanks in part to the exercise I get riding this thing. The one thing I've noticed after a year of riding in all sorts of conditions is that the cassette seems to be wearing a bit. Some of the cogs are already creating clicking sounds. I lubricate nearly every time I go out and clean the bike regularly so I don't think it's that. But this slight clicking equates to the occasional pop when trying to change gears going up hill. And yes, I not only have had it adjusted professionally, I personally did a better job than my LBS did, yet it still does it. After careful inspection I've noticed some of the teeth are not perfectly straight. So I'm already considering upgrading the cassette and derailleur. Oh and those original pedals were awful. They were exactly the same quality of pedal as what I had on my GT Aggressor Pro... which is pretty sad. Some RaceFace pedals weren't that big of an investment and now I have the shin scars like everyone else....... 😁 Over all, I'd buy this bike again. Only paid $1350 for it last summer during the peak of the bike buying craze so I can't complain! And yes, it scratches bad. I often have to store it with my wife's bike and you can tell where our bikes rub each other even though we're super careful. This is not to mention the scratching from bumps and bruises when out and about... and no, I've never actually crashed it yet.
Great Review! I have the Roscoe 6 (2021), which I love, but hated the fork that came with it. I have just upgraded the fork to the Rockshox Reba RL, which changes this bike from great to AWESOME! Thanks and new subscriber...
I recently got a Trek X-calibre 7 as I wanted something that could do a bit of everything. Light single track, commute, carrying luggage on racks etc. I have also had problems getting mine to shift into the lowest gear and it’s a 46T ring. It just seems too big! Mine is the same blue/ grey scheme and I was also surprised how easily it scratched and chipped. Compared to my 2013 trek hard tail it has less scratches after multiple years use. I am keen to get a roscoe 8 to run next to the x-calibre for heavier trail use and bike packing. Having the matching paint will look pretty cool! Thanks for sharing
Awesome video and list. I just picked up a black 2021 last week and I’m in love. Stunning bike. I’m also a beginner at mountain biking but wanted to start with a good hard tail and work my way up.
Great video. I have also had mine 6 months, however I ugly you missed is the bottom bracket. Had to replace mine after 800 miles of wet, dirty winter - just lets a great bike down having to change it that soon
I had the Roscoe 8 for about 2 years now and had them convert it to tubeless before I took delivery. My dropper post been fine so far. Brakes are adequate for the area I ride. Gear changes, so so. Needs a new chain already. Handle bars always seemed too wide for my liking. Makes the bike uncomfortable and hard to get around tight spaces. I plan someday to have them shorten them up. Bike seems "heavy" to me. Like I'm peddling a tractor trailer up the hill. But that gives me more exercise (workout). The tires are nice and bike performs well on most all terrains. Had it on dirt, mud and snow with good luck. On ice, it didn't do so good, but everything would have had trouble on that trail that day. Good review. I think the main thing with any bike is "Do you really ride it?". If you can honestly answer "yes" then its a good bike for you.
@@mtbrookie596 It's dope especially after adding some mudguards, nukeproof pedals and a little air to the forks just gotta get over that saddle sore and I'll be sweet 😎
All good points, I have Silverback Trail that is very similar. Mid fat tires really are slow on gravel roads. Fixed the brakes by putting 203mm rotor on front, moving the 180mm to the rear, and paying particular attention to bleeding and topping up fluid. The ugly you missed was no 148 boost rear.
@@Wetdogsmells Think about it. Depends on the situation. For high end brakes with heaps of power, you may not notice any different. On these low end brakes you certainly do, and that is my experience. Also, why do manufacturers put different size rotors front and rear, then?
I have a 2020 Roscoe 8 and love it. I swapped out the bar and stem for a set of Race Face 35's in 780mm wide and 40mm length, much better handling now. My bad: keep an eye on the fork pressure, if you notice a significant decrease, quit riding and have you local bike shop notify Sram. Mine and apparently many others had faulty internal seals and eventually the negative chamber will have a positive pressure and blow out the wiper seal. About the slow dropper, check the set screw on the lever, mine had come loose and the cable had slipped.
The dropper, brake, shifting issues you have are mechanical faults arguably on setup of the bike. The shot of your dropper post coming up for instance is very slow. Get it a proper tune and enjoy the bike.
Thank you so much, you helped me a lot to chose my bike and i think although there are a few bad things i will buy it. Keep it up and greetings fromm Germany🇩🇪
Your rear mech saying not hitting the 50T it's just basically gear cable tension, as after a few rides the cable will stretch, just dial it in and get the tension right 😉🤟 I have the Trek Roscoe 7 and love it, but just wished the hubs were sealed bearings as I stripped mine down and greased them and set them properly, as when I got mine I was on Trek Roscoe group page on Facebook, and there were big issues on there hubs , failing after 3 to 6 weeks, so when I got mine I checked the spindles and found that front and rear were so tight they wouldn't turn at all.. and that literally they'd fail after a week, so luckily me being in the know how to fix these issues, sorted them as on checking them , they had no grease either .. so sorted with high performance grease for bearings and been running smoothly since July last year . 👌 great vid and good info especially for beginners... dropper post I usually add some grease inside the lock ring , unscrew it of then add some grease underneath it and screw it back on .. this stops grime getting in and keeps it running smooth 😎👌
I got a 2021 Roscoe 7 and the hub spindles were also insanely tight. I can’t believe a shop assembling these bikes wouldn’t notice or care to properly tension the bearings like that.
good to now about the Hub, I want to change it in my Roscoe some time, any info about thos awful SRAM NX derailleur, I'am asking becouse after first ride shifting completly gave up, and after changing to Sram GX Derailleur, it is awesome
I have a 2020 purple Roscoe 8 and orange pedals, grips and helmet just like you. I have upgraded recently handle bar(40mm rised) , BSA bb with Sram NX eagle dub crank set (165mm) and Line Comp 40 rear wheel with 3 extra paws I absolutely love this bike I do agree with brake power but I realized that my brake levers was close to grips so I changed both levers to move further from grips and now I feel my bike's brake power is much much stronger
I'm between the roscoe 7 and the specialized Fuse 27.5. I use the bike to hit the trails but also to commute, so I'm not completely sure what is the best. Personally, I like the Fuse (esthetically), but doesn't have air suspension and only is 9 speeds with 27.5 wheels. As you said, the roscoe is not a commute bike because of its wider tires, but for the price, the roscoe has much better components
I love my 2022, even tho it’s not the new design frame, I’m not a super hero, the bike still outclasses my abilities. I put a Marzocchi Z2 on it, tubeless tires and good pedals. This thing climbs and descends like buttah, and smooths out all but the roughest desert sections, and even then, with 13-15 psi out back and 18-19 up front (Minions), it cushions real nice 😊 Sure it sucks on the pavement, but did I get this bike for pavement?? Hell no! Nice review
Ordered one Oct 2021, original delivery date march 2021. Trek kept pushing the delivery date forward 4 times, and after promising the 4th delivery date would really be met. Trek decided to stop producing the 2021 model and cancelled my order two weeks ago. Without letting me know of course, had to inform at the bikeshop if the bike was finally delivered...and this was the news they gave me. Not so nice.
If you fall off it’s going to scratch that’s a no brainier. The positives totally agree, negatives-and ugly don’t bother with them. It’s a great bike 👍
on my Roscoe I got rid of that NX Derailleur(never again buying a bike with those) , bought a GX, and it's a gamechnger, next are those really bad breaks
OK, so that's been my biggest concern. Did you have to replace your cassette too? Mine is starting to have very slightly bent teeth and makes a very quiet clicking noise even when pedaling by hand on the rack. I'm not happy with the non-adjustable clutch on the NX either... seems it wouldn't have been that hard to make it adjustable.
The SRAM Derailleur you have has a known spring tension issue that prevents you from shifting into the biggest cog. You could try to get it replaced via warranty. Though if you had the components many people just replace it with Shimano Deore or go up a level with SRAM.
I love this bike, rode about 4000km on it and I feel is the most comfortable and fun hard tail mountain bike I have had for the last 20 years. Only negative is the chainring which is too small with 30 teeth so Max. Comfortable pedalling is about 32km/h.
I've noticed this speed thing. Some folks say it's the tires, but it seemed like no matter how much effort I put in to, I could only go so fast on the flat.
I'm a little surprised you didn't go with SPD peddles/shoes. They really help getting my Roscoe up some very steep hills. With that super granny gear and SPD's, it will nearly climb a tree. I once forgot my bike shoes and couldn't even make it up this one steep short hill.
By far the biggest problem having owned one for a year and a half is the the quick release rear dropouts at the back. It’s an outdated standard and a weird combination with the boost spacing that causes a lot of problems with the overall stiffness of the back end. Still a great bike though
I believe the 2022 has a through axle and 140mm travel. I have a 2022 X Caliber and the QR in back is my only real gripe, maybe 100mm travel on my X Caliber could be better but forks are so expensive.
I'm also an IOM rider. I have the 2018/19 Roscoe 8 with the matt grey colour scheme. The paintwork was disappointingly fragile on that too. I think most of the points you raised as "bad" are likely to be set up or maintenance issues.
Paint is terrible. Such a nice teal color on my Roscoe 7 2020 is chipped and scratched everywhere. If that bothers you well be prepared. I have 15 years old TREK 3700 just brushed aluminum color and it looks newer that my Roscoe... Rear hub boost 141 is another pain. Seat on the dropper post is wiggling around...Impossible to fix. Despite that Roscoe 7 and 8 are good and capable bikes. Would not recommend Roscoe 6. For not so large money surplus you will get way better bike.
See I want the 2022 Roscoe 6 29er but the colors r not for me. I love that blue you got so much, I wish it was available in that. I would even consider spending the big money for the roscoe 8 just to get the blue but that one does not have the rack mounting holes. Rack mounting holes r super important for me, as I would like to do like short 5-10 mile commutes to work sometimes. Such a shame, I think even the purple is nice but I keep my bikes for 10+ years, I would like to LOVE the color instead of just "meh".
Agree about the paint. I’ve got the (2018?) grey version, and the paint on inner side of chain stays rubbed off on my second ride from just a bit of mud stuck on sides of tyre. Also the rear hub is shit to be honest. There’s clear movement on the rear axle, no way to adjust. Even my lbs recommended to upgrade to Hope. Love the bike tho
Could someone with more knowledge tell me if there is a possibilty to change the tyres for sometimes more suitable for commuting? I'd love to get this bike but I want to do both rough terrain and commuting on asphalt.
I have a 13 miles commute each way from south London to east London. considering the road condition, the shortcuts, the traffic, the canals, these tires are absolutely fine. the bike runs smoothly. But if you are not sure you can always find suitable 2.8 road tyres on CRC
Brake awesome mt500 , one finger app and powerful have you contaminated the brakes .. try fork lube / cleaner on the dropper post . Gears try adjust the barrel on the shifter - seem most your issues my be learning to maintain your bike ... maintenance is just as important as learning to ride all best
Dude the shifting to top gear is not a niggle just have it set up , when you realise how easy it is it will annoy you ,, don’t forget this is something you’ll have to do owning any bike
Hey Rookie! How do those minimalist mudguards work for you? Also, do you do any bikepacking? Would be curious how well it would do in that capacity. Thank you!!!
I have an SQ2 and it is a phenomenal bike. Same frame as the SQ3 but obviously 3 has upgraded parts. The roscoe is a good bike too, it’s honestly up to personal preference. Me personally, I would go with the Marin, you could even get an SQ2 and upgrade it yourself, although the 3 comes with a RockShox revelation which is a phenom fork, but I also really dig the recon that came on mine. Good luck and good riding brother.
The SRAM SX and NX drivetrains are garbage. I had a trek Roscoe 7 and that was my biggest complaint. I adjusted them, had them retuned and replaced, never worked worth a shit. Do yourself a favor and go shimano if you’re on a budget, they are made much better.
Fully disagree with it not being a good commuting bike ,that thing is a beast on the roa, i use mines to commute almost everyday....but i guess it depends on the rider

@@compunomad1399 a 32 teeth chainring and narrower + lower roughness tyres should help to gain up to 5km/h on flat.
I'm a little surprised you didn't go with SPD peddles/shoes. They really help getting my Roscoe up some very steep hills. With that super granny gear and SPD's, it will nearly climb a tree. I once forgot my bike shoes and couldn't even make it up this one steep short hill.
Hola..amigo
Compré una roscoe 8..es espectacular....me encanta la comodidad y el diseño..😍
Saludos desde México
Im still trying to buy a matte black one somewhere
By far the biggest problem having owned one for a year and a half is the the quick release rear dropouts at the back. It’s an outdated standard and a weird combination with the boost spacing that causes a lot of problems with the overall stiffness of the back end. Still a great bike though
I believe the 2022 has a through axle and 140mm travel. I have a 2022 X Caliber and the QR in back is my only real gripe, maybe 100mm travel on my X Caliber could be better but forks are so expensive.
X Caliber 8
I'm also an IOM rider. I have the 2018/19 Roscoe 8 with the matt grey colour scheme. The paintwork was disappointingly fragile on that too. I think most of the points you raised as "bad" are likely to be set up or maintenance issues.
Hi. I have Xcaliber 8. I dont have the red ring in fork suspension. Do you have? How do you adjust the fork? Only with pump and down with turtle?
What is “Shimano/S-Ram NX Eagle”?
Minor point with #4... I don't think the shifter is a 'Shimano SRAM NX Eagle'.
Thanks for the video, a friend might buy one... I love my Trek Slash 8 2019... try a dually... cant go back...! :)
Such a shame, I think even the purple is nice but I keep my bikes for 10+ years, I would like to LOVE the color instead of just "meh".
hey what mud guards are you using?
What kind of grips do you use?
Moto X 2.8 are perfect
I have just ordered a Roscoe 6 so can’t wait.
Where in SA are you from?
Beware the awful rear hub. It's crap and will break.
Have rosco 8 love it
Did TREK ever respond to the "scratches easily" issue? Your opinion?
Didn’t hear a thing!!
You know you can fit 29 wheels as standard
I agree with most of your points
We got new cradles for our traditional bike rack
My 2018 R8 managed my 6'3 350lb (at the time of buying) wit ease....Great bike.... shite hubs and BB
Where did you get you Captain America shield from?
Use this search criteria in Amazon: Bicycle Headset Top Cap Cover with Bolt 1 1/8", Bike Stem Cap Aluminium Alloy Star Design Captain America
Thank you!!!
is it worth it to get this or spend the extra money to get the fuel 5??
Spend the extra... BB and hubs will need replacing within 200 mile
I wonder if he knows it’s tubeless READY and not tubeless, unless he has converted it.
I wondered that same thing... my LBS converted it as part of the sale.
Good run through, man. Appreciate the review. I noticed you were wearing ON shoes. How are those on MTB rides? Which model did you get?
SHOULD I GET TREK MARLIN 6, 7 OR THIS ROSCOE 8?
I think you won’t regret it if your budget can stretch to the Roscoe 8!!!
you can easly get Marilin with shimano Deore derailleur, buy a dropper post, and the value should be same
I just got my 2021 Specialized Fuse 27.5+ a week ago. Hey, what brand are your mudguards?
Changing problem isn’t to do with the bike just how u set it up
Is this roscoe 8 2022 or 2021?
I have a 2021 roscoe 8 hardtail I luv it very nice bike cross country bike😎
What is the frame made from?
Trek calls it Alpha Aluminium!!
Could someone make me a recommendation, I don't know whether to buy Roscoe 8 or Marin SAN QUENTIN 3
@@Iheartdgd thanks !!! I decided the sq3. It's a a really good frame. I love that bike !!!!
@@cristhianarturosalcedogarc2651 good for you buddy, shred on my man :)
has anyone got any like like paint imperfection like tiny little air bubbbles or something like that because my trke rosoce 6 has it
Have the same bike lovely bike to ride just the paintwork scratching so easily is a bummer wouldn’t put me of it tho 👌😁
What size frame? And how tall are you?
I'm 6"2 and xl is perfect
Thanks
Giant fathom 29
Is this bike good for long distance?
Not for road
Very good.... i use for bike packing, a tad heavy when fully loaded but comfort is 2nd to non,
Best I find is the intro, knee down in front your baby,,,,😁👍
Is this bike good as a xc bike?
Nonono
Says gear shifts smooth as butter, then says it does not shift all the way to the first gear!!!!!!!!!
The SRAM SX and NX drivetrains are garbage. I had a trek Roscoe 7 and that was my biggest complaint. I adjusted them, had them retuned and replaced, never worked worth a shit. Do yourself a favor and go shimano if you’re on a budget, they are made much better.
Shimano sram shifters lol 😆
That's where I stopped watching
Fully disagree with it not being a good commuting bike ,that thing is a beast on the roa, i use mines to commute almost everyday....but i guess it depends on the rider
At the end of the day, it’s a great bike! Road or gravel or mud. As long as you enjoy it and it works for you! Have fun.
So I'm other words there's nothing wrong with it other than maintenance and poor setup issues
I went into the Trek store yesterday in Brisbane, Australia to see if they have a Roscoe 7... They said next shipment is in 7 MONTHS :(
Use ceramic car coating!
Or even wrap the high critical areas with PPF
Which dropper did you purchase for this bike? I'm in the US so I believe this is the same bike as the Trek Marlin 8.
Did you watch the video?
Is a Roscoe 8 it came with it
2020 roscoe 7, you forgot the hub and bb issues boeta
What is your bike testing on
