This spring, a flood brought a blockage of logs directly to my house, and today I need to remove it to clear the river. In addition, I will try fly fishing and cook a delicious dinner. When I first started with fly fishing, an actual expert told me these things;
1. most of the fish you catch will be caught within 50 feet (about 20 meters?) of you, so long casts are not necessary.
2. Your reel is for storing line only, not to retrieve the fish.
3. your rod should be an extension of your fore arm (do not bend your wrist). You will have a very tired arm, at first.
4. False casts should be from the 10 o'clock to the 2 o'clock position, only the final fore cast should go past that.
5. You don't have to hold the rod straight up, find a comfortable angle.
6 each fore or back cast should start just before the lure reaches the end of the previous cast.
7. the last fore cast should lay the lure down softly. (the hardest thing to do)
8 let the lure lay for about 10 seconds before restarting.
There is a dressing for dry (Floating) flies to prevent them from getting wet and sinking. Dry flies are the best, to me. There is nothing like the thrill of a fish hitting a dry fly.
Once you can do all of this reasonably, and it doesn't take long, you will not want to fish any other way, and oh the fun when a big one bites. Good luck I hope this helps. ;-)
