  • Beau gives us a first look at a small range of HYPR Hawaii boards and upon flipping them over, we see some interesting design elements.
    Remember these first look videos are not full SUPboarder reviews, they’re not even close! They are unedited, gut feeling videos showing what’s in the box and how they look for the first time.
    We will be bringing you a brand / range overview of these HYPR Hawaii boards in the coming weeks.

    Something sure looks off with those Hypr boards. Who would put bungee cords across the tail pad of a surf SUP? Especially on a gun shape. I'll be curious to see your review of how they surf... and good luck finding appropriate waves for proper Hawaiian guns in the UK.

      "Hawaiian Gun" refers to a board to surf Hawaii's North Shore, I would never take these boards out to the North Shore, in fact I don't even see these boards anywhere in the waters of Oahus North or South shores. From what I can see on Hypr Hawaii's social media I only see these boards in flat water or 1ft Waikiki. These are not boards made for "Hawaiian" surf. Not to be so negative but maybe they were made to hang up in the Hard Rock Cafe, they are so darn pretty.

      idk, the board maneuverability looks pretty limited from the other videos posted on UA-cam. definitely would not want to take these boards on heavy surf on oahu north shore. I feel the 8-9'0 range with thinned out rails like from starboard or some local shapers is much more progressive and easier on tracking. those bungies also seem to be in the wrong place.

      @@oldgym I think you nailed it. The Hypr guys don't surf. It looks like they hired a decent shaper to design boards but then the marketing guys who don't surf changed up the shapes and then had a cheap factory in China make the boards. Hilarious.

      @@richardordonez7403 idk... but you don't understand the Physics of reducing wetted surface area or hydrodynamics for SPEED ... As for Bungees ...just because OTHER makers DON"T offer this flexibility, that's the shortcoming.. Just UNTIE the BUNGESS when Surfing when you have to use the KICKPAD .. USE it when just paddling for Fitness.. it does not that difficult to figure out or even a 3 digit IQ to ask first

    What an awesome board I've got - small, fast, yet super stable with my 95kg... This is a 9' Pono!..

    I’ve got 2 of their boards a 12’6 Gun and 14ft prone (along with other makes) and love them. I didn’t really buy the gun for surfing as I’m more a distance paddler and I love getting miles in on the ocean with it, prefer it to my Allstar. Adding more to the quiver soon 😎

    What's the width and thickness of the 10' board please? Looks a lot wider, more 32" ball park.

      @SUPboardermag  3 роки тому +1

      Must have missed that in the editing process. The 10'0 is 33" wide and 4.5" thick.

    IMO the Hypr Hawaii boards are really in a category of their own, and should be judged that way. They are built like no other production boards on the market using traditional methods and e.g. (on the wood ones) very thick veneers, with wood stringers, nose and tail blocks, s-glass reinforcement and other top materials. Consequently they are very strong, stiff and durable - they will last for many years. However there is an inevitable weight penalty for that, so if you are someone who wants a superlight competition-spec board with eggshell fragility then looks elsewhere. I have 4 of their double-carbon full PVC wrap boards and you could knock down trees with them. One of them took a terrible nose-first dive into a rocky shorebreak that would have completely stoved in a normal board, but it gave it only a scratch to the topcoat. The other thing to note about the Hypr boards is of course the looks - and the diversity of them. They produce small runs each year of certain finishes and constructions according to the hardwoods available at that time, and this means that each board is in effect a limited edition. So there is a built-in exclusivity to them. The look and finish of them just can't be compared to any other board I have seen - they are even more gorgeous in the flesh than they look in the videos. Of course, as with anything else, whether you like the looks depends on personal taste, but those who "get" what Hypr are doing here tend to be very loyal customers who acquire many of their boards (like me - I have 6 of them in total, bought in succession). A further aspect of the Hype boards is the design - the very deep double concaves (can you imagine how difficult they must be to laminate when using veneers that are e.g. 5 times or more thicker than other brands use?) and the general low-volume ethos. These boards are designed to sit fairly low in the water to aid stability and reduce windage, and so they work really well in choppy conditions - with the added stability given by the concaves they are much more stable than you'd expect for their widths. When that is combined with the efficient tracking that the concaves give, this means that they are very easy and pleasant boards for general cruising, and because of that the guns in particular are very good all-round boards: they are not specialist-only surf SUPs. The 12-6 gun is the natural successor perhaps to the highly-rated and still loved 12ft PSH gun shaped by Blane Chambers back in the early days of SUP: that board showed that gun shapes could work very well as all-round boards for intermediate and advanced paddlers. The 12-6 Hypr surfs even better than that classic board did - get it on a fat long walling wave and it is amazing how much fun it is for a 12-6 surf-tourer that will probably spend most of it's time as a touring board for most people. The position of the bungees is another Hypr trademark - having the weight of a load over the fins rather than the nose when touring makes good sense because it reduces nose windage, thereby improving tracking. It does mean you can't carry very big loads on board, but it is enough for beach basics of clothes, drink etc and you really notice the advantage of the positon if the wind comes up. It also means that if you remove the bungees, you hardly notice the fittings, rather than the leash plugs etc ruining all that beautiful construction that you admire as you paddle along. Finally, the thin rails and deep concaves really work on a wave, in terms of speed and turning, as you can see in this video of one of the early versions of the 9-6 gun being surfed in Hawaii. ua-cam.com/video/iQtiVV_39ZU/v-deo.html
    IMO in a world of increasing homogeneity, Hypr have carved out a unique position for themselves in the market, and judging by how well these boards are selling lots of people want this combination of exclusivity, performance, beauty, and traditional craftmanship using top-notch materials that creates something of lasting value that will give pleasure for years - whether you want to surf the hell out of them, or just cruise along in the summer sun with friends. And no, I'm not connected to the brand, I am just another happy customer.
