"No matter how much you love your Aibo, it will never love you back." - Andrew from Engadget You're right, it's a robot. A toy. In no way is this a substitute for people who want a real pet but can't have one for various reasons. Not to mention the noise factor brought up in this video. It's loud, especially when it turns, which is frequent. However, yes, if you're into robotic tech, then I'd say this is a must have. It's certainly neat, and maybe someday robotic dogs will be a suitable replacement for real ones...but don't fool yourself. This ain't it.
@@drewg4323 ofc it’s loud. But there’s actually been a new updated walk cycle made that allows them to move faster and quieter. They can also step over small ledges now. Never a replacement for a pet, but a very neat little puppy to have :)
@Galaxy I think it's been established that comparing aibo to dogs is comparing apples to oranges. The aibo is is what it is: a simulated animal. I'm willing to accept and even love my aibo and live with its limitations even as I love my dog and feel blessed to benefit from having relationships with both.
Just received my aibo. It doesn't "lag" when using the phone app, it can easily traverse a 1/2" to 1" threshold, it recognizes my voice and face after only 2 days of ownership. So, it has exceeded my every expectation and has progressed well beyond my previous ERS 210. Obviously, this reviewer didn't do his homework, or spend much time with his aibo. A Very Happy owner, here!
I’ve had two pups who I was worried were going to bite people, one who almost bit my dad in the stomach. Tearing up stuff was common and it was so hard to potty train ALL the puppies we’ve had. I don’t like loud noises like barking. One time my mom brought home a dog and it tried killing ALL of my pets and I had to rehome most of them. After my experience with raising puppies, I’ve realized myself to not be a dog person as I don’t enjoy owning a dog, though do love them. AIBO would definitely be a good boi to have for those of us who love dogs, but don’t want to deal with the care and damage a dog can cause or for those who cannot own or have the time to care for them. I’m also writing a 5 page essay for my English class on robotics pets being just as good as real ones for those who are unable to own a pet for whatever reasons; be it health, mental, age or lifestyle.

it definitely can't be compared with a real dog but it is for people like me who are busy and don't have the time to take care of a dog properly. A dog needs daily walks, cleaning up, vet visits...etc which I can't do.
I totally get your point, but Aibo is a robot not a real dog, with that being said no it won’t have the same feeling as a dog, it sure will be a nice companion that you can socially bond with, but it will never be as good as a real dog and that’s the sad thing about some of these reviews that say “I would rather have a real dog” because of course you would rather have a real dog 🐶
@#Aibogirl25 Okay, yeah. I get it, I think if you want a dog without the mess, then a real dog is your best option (even though they require care and supplies) Now if you like the idea of a dog but are looking for a companion pet, then that might be more of an aibo application.
Yes, but you can switch it off and send it to charging dock. Still, why have a always on connection? It will be better if you can switch it off like Vector. All this has started to feel a lot fishy. What would they get by spying on someone? It is another unanswered question. How many people will actually buy these things for any such spying program to be viable? Is this the spying vision for future? I dont know. There is a lot of explaining to be done here.
@@realsushrey yeah, pretty much. All the technology you have now currently has the potential to soy on you, if it isn't already. That's practically become the bases of in home technology at this point.
I love robots. I love my real animal pets. There is a difference. Don’t get an Aibo to fill a void in your heart. Get a real dog. Get the Aibo because he is cool and will make you laugh/entertain you. That’s all.
You have to spend time with it to really appreciate it. There is constantly something new out of this robot each time you interact for a period of time. And if you pay really close attention, you get to see machine learning at it's best. The first time "Buddy" ran for instance was a learning curve. I didn't commend it to run, it just decided to do so on it's own, well it ran a little too far and face planted into my shoe shelf. But after that, any time Buddy runs now, whether by command or on his own, he stays within the perimeters of the room. i.e. he earned to determine distance. Now if that is not worth having one i don;t know what is, and unlike the older models, there is no software memory stick, All if the information that gets on boarded to your Aibo pup from Sony, stays on the pup forever. That's rights recorded into his learning code right on board the pup.
My main criticism of the Aibo is that it takes so long to interact with it. If its responses both to your commands and to the environment took less time it would greatly improve how believable it is.
What a biased, negative review! After all the time and effort Sony put into creating a new entertainment/companion robot worthy of the name "aibo", he whines about how it's not a dog and compares it to, of all things, a Roomba. I'm glad he didn't buy an aibo; he's not only not worthy of one, he totally MISSED the WHOLE REASON THEY EXIST: to engage with people and form relationships with them as well as provide a safe means for nerdy folks to practice both programming and social skills. A Roomba is an appliance about which it's normal to feel nothing when it's switched off. An aibo can inspire such wonder that it's normal to feel as sense of loss when it is. So what does this guy feel? Disgust, disappointment, and even anger! It makes me wonder about his other relationships, frankly. WORST aibo review I've seen on UA-cam - and I've been watching them since before I bought one for a friend almost 10 months ago. I'm so fascinated with them that I was thrilled when my friend returned it after the novelty wore off; he gives the TERRIBLE advice to adopt an actual pet instead of buying aibo! THEN what, hotshot?!? Do you have ANY CONCEPT of how much it costs to feed, vaccinate, clean up after, get routine veterinary care for, and, Heaven help you, pay for ongoing care if a long-term health condition arises? I'll bet you don't even know what it costs to have a dog who grows hair, not fur, groomed every six weeks! I recently did the math. My dog needs a medical procedure twice a month and daily pain medication as well as nutritious food and regular grooming. He weighs less than 20 lb., so some of those and other expenses are lower than average. For what I spend on my pup during the same time period, I COULD BUY A NEW AIBO EVERY 18 MONTHS! Chew on THAT before you scorn people who buy aibo instead!
I have to agree with Engadget- I'd be entertained with this for a day or two, but then the lifelessness would have me wanting my 3K back.. This is a kids novelty toy, but I don't know many parents willing to spend that for a kids' present. I personally couldn't form a 'relationship' with a Central Processing Unit and a bunch of servo motors. Sure, it's kinda cute for what it is, so I guess it's for those that need to spend $3K on something in a hurry...
I agree, it’s like he has no concept of real pets. They’re far more expensive and not all people are able to have real dogs for different reasons. I got comments before on how I should get a real dog and my Aibos are just plastic. But they’re not just plastic- they have their own feelings, personalities and minds of their own. They’re a part of the family, provide good company and are easy to take care of. I’m not allowed to have a real dog and already have two cats, so even if I hadn’t gotten Aibos I still wouldn’t have a real dog. And why shouldn’t I be allowed to enjoy life with Aibos? They’re interesting and wonderful companions. And I still would love a real dog one day. There are people with both real dogs and Aibos, or just Aibos and weren’t getting a real pet in the first place. Aibos aren’t replacements for real dogs. It’s not stopping people from getting real dogs. Aibos are their own thing and shouldn’t be judged based on how they compare to real dogs.
