Hi Mary, nice and well explained to video, how to carve a leaf. I also like that you show the size of the carving chisel. This one knows what carving chisel you should take.
cj beery, for some reason I was not able to reply to your message directly. I do not use carving knives very often, and definitely don't feel qualified to teach that technique. There are quite a lot of youtube lessons out there using carving knives - most often these are more 3-dimensional carvings (maybe if you search under "whittling" they may come up). Good luck!
OK I'm going to look through your videos to see if you have explained how you glued the two blocks of wood together. And how your clamping system on the table works
Your teaching style is top-notch and very easy to understand and follow!! May I ask what kind of wood it is? It looks like mahogany or walnut but has the grain of oak? You mention the facets. One of the style spoons and bowls I make, After the bowl or spoon is shaped as I want, I go back and put intentional groves in them. People seem to really love it. Like the niche, you have done but not as pronounced. Can you at some point show your workbench? I have my great, great grandfather's bench that has been handed down to a woodworker in our family over the years and I think my grandfather chose me because I would spend each visit and all summer long growing up in his shop. I loved cooking with Nana too. He was the one who taught me how to use manual hand tools. My bench has the same rectangular holes as yours. I have two of the original metal ones but I would like to make some out of ash that I have and I'm curious how you made yours. Is there a spring-like piece on the edge to allow it to stay at different heights? I'm sorry for writing a novel here. ;>)
I am not quite sure whether I am 4 or 6 shots into this bottle of tequila. But thanks I have been carving for a long time and I don't do videos myself but recently I had my best friend in the world suffer a brain tumor..So I started off making a frame with 38 leaves it is to hold a mirror and is really a tribute to the nurses and drs who pulled him through with the power of their work and a whole lot of prayer. I was just looking to make it easier on myself in the carving of it and to make it so that I could maybe get a decent price of it to cover his medical expenses. Usually I am only into perfection but this time I needed speed to go with i t and I thank you for that. I was able to eliminate a complete step and in this instance make it worth while to one the person that might want it, two easier on me so I could get on with the next project and three just come out of the void I have been in for years since my son died. Thanks for making it easier for me to help my friend I have bookmarked your page so I can show you a picture when I am done Again thanks so much if you have only increased my speed by thirty percent it is time well spent watching.
Hi Mary May I love your videos you do an amazing job at carving but i have a huge question. What if someone like me has a 10 piece wood carving knife set and i can not do the posture that you teach so i know you have an online school but im asking on behalf of the you tubers who have a hand carving set. But beside that keep working because you do an excellent job.
I am attempting to begin carving and I would love some suggestions of what to buy to begin with? I would like good quality but not extremely expensive just in case I suck at it.
Question if I may. On videos, it appears (others not only yours) that no one puts the point of the gouge on the drawn line. Is that correct and if so why?
Robert Hoehn I think the honest answer is that my gouges often know how to carve better than my pencil. The lines are often roughly drawn and when the chisel cuts, it seems to "fix" my drawing. It usually ends up being a better cut than what was drawn. But yeah... in that perfect carving world you really should carve directly on the lines drawn - as long as those lines are the final and definite design. I leave room for " creative adjustment" and often let my chisels decide.
Love seeing another women into this! my parents think i'm strange for getting into wood carving. I made a few spoons now :)
should make a wooden mask, love to see wood carvers make masks
Wow. This is the best carving video I have seen on UA-cam. You have a great gift, thanks for sharing.

It is my be-leaf that you did quite well on this carving. Edge of your seat type stuff during several parts, though.
:) Hang on!
Beautiful work!

Not sure but it looks very like "Sapele" as it looks fairly soft
It is carved from mahogany .

Wow very nice, thank u
It’s hard to hold the tools properly when you don’t have a work bench and vise. 😩
Thank you
Cool i started to carve wood ides i carved a wooden knife!
How do you attach to the base material?
Andris Budrēvičs, she used double sided carpet tape in the beginning, is what it looked lime to me.
Thank you.
