What I personally got from this is after all these years Akuma might actually be starting to enjoy fighting again, at least against Ryu. Like the figure smiling and Ryu's dialog definitely makes me think Akuma is chamging internally.
You definitely see that in the world tour as well. The only reason he sees your character as worthy to learn under him is because of the same smile in the face of death that ryu has

Because you were able to stare into the face of Death... And laugh.
Based on Ryu and Luke's dialogues, something Is changing on Akuma, or More precisely, he wants something... He wants a good fight, one that can Make him Smile too.

Yeah I'm glad they didn't go down the "he'll eventually become Oni", which is what was happening in SF3 - he was going mad.
Looks like capcom retconned his story and Ryu has definitely had an effect on him 😄 Judging by SF5 story looks like Akuma wants to transcend "beyond the demon" and he knows he can't do that with the satsui no hado alone.
i wish that one of those carved statuses looked like Heihachi in some way.
He didn't really kill him though, Kazuya did. He wouldn't take credit for someone else's kill.

I like the detail of Akuma checking to make sure he didn't kill his opponent. He really doesn't want to kill anyone, even though he uses "the fist of killing intent"
He's specified before he only kills those he deems worthy (Gen, Gouken) and he doesn't deem anyone on the SF6 cast worthy except Ryu. But he's not killing Ryu for personal reasons

World tour does a lot more for Akuma than the arcade mode. It made me realize that i dont think I ever really saw what his motivations were before. I definitely like akuma as a character way more after doing his world tour stuff

I think Akuma's story is good because it shows him accepting Ryu's path as a warrior and respecting him as a possible equal which is further emphasized in World Tour and many of the arcade modes are like a prolouge to the events in Nayshall and World Tour being a part of it, and I would also argue that some characters in Tekken do get much to do or ways to progress like Asuka, Lili, Paul, Law, Nina, Anna, etc.

There was plenty of story for akuma he seems to he achieving some sort of peace through his use of the satsui jo hadou and fighting ryu plus he sees him more as a rival now instead of a "cub" i loved the story
another case where the World Tour story actually shows how much Ryu has grown, and how Akuma has almost become even more of a recluse. . . although somewhat humanized (if slightly) by talking with others about him. Plus; getting to actually talk to Akuma is still genuinely a wild thing to me, since for the longest time he's been this wild card element in SF lore. Never really part of the mainline plot, but always present in some way.
max just refuses to ever play world tour so he has no clue what he's talking about with the story which is kind of a shame because he's been begging for World Tour to be a thing.

@@joedatius yeah; Max and a few others, completely ignored WT. Which is fine on its own; but a lot of the same people then go on to complain about the lack of story for characters in the other modes, when it’s all right there in WT.

There is a bunch for Ryu to legitimately mock about Akuma. Like... Why kill your enemies if all you live for is fighting with them? They will come back and they will be stronger. Your livelihood will never run dry.
Exactly! Maybe Akuma will seek out fighters who he sees has potential to grow and show them what is at the peak.
Akuma doesn't kill everyone he fights, thats a bit of misconception. He kills opponents who he has considered to have reached their peak in skill and offers him no more challenge.
It's why his Rivalry with Ryu is a thing because he see's Ryu as having massive potential and he wants him to use the dark hadou to become as strong as possible and overtake him.
Akuma would immediately fire back at Ryu by saying he actually has a job (fruit seller), as well as being a top level martial artist.

I'm happy with this timeline that Ryu left his evil self behind, it got so obnoxious. Kage was the pinnacle
Akuma discovering the joy of battle rather than only being power hungry is also not much, but satisfactory

Has Max played through world tour yet? I think SF6 has done more than SF has done in decades to show the street fighters have advancing lives outside of punching each other in the face repeatedly.
The only thing we can do is infer and speculate. Ryu's smile left an impression on Akuma and that might start something in him. Rather than aim to be the best, he might actually start to seek out fighters stronger than him, to revel in the fight.

‘Things happening’ to characters is a matter of perception. Chun-li is getting through to Juri in some way. It’s all subtext. enough to where characters dont have to be incredibly different but can still grow.
Akuma is seeking to be the strongest truck in the tournament.
If they age Akuma anymore he’ll be in a wheelchair in the next game.
I wish they put a little more efford in the story mode, they even already had the assets of the World Tour to try to do something that talks a little more about the characters, advance their lore in any shape or form. This was basically Akuma carving in a cave, while remembering the people he fought in the past and that time he destroyed a random truck.

So the arcade/story mode is just Akuma shadow boxing against his memories of the fighters as he tries to come to terms with how the man he considers a rival and, perhaps even, an equal hasn't fallen down a dark path of his own despite combating many of the world's great fighters and even greater evils?

Akuma wanted to run the ones with Truck-Kun, the Isekai maker.
Visually the characters in Street Fighter move forward, but they don't do much narratively. You see Ryu slowly become a Buddhist monk visually, but he is still just wandering around beating dudes up narratively. You see that Akuma is becoming more and more like Asura or Bishamonten, but he is still just trying to kick Ryu's ass. Ken looks divorced, Guile looks like he just walked out of the VA, but are they really doing anything different than they were before, and if so, is it really just removing some of their pathos to facilitate them randomly bopping around?
What else are Ryu and Akuma supposed to do? That's their entire character.
I don't think ANYONE truly expected something ground breaking from the story, reason why the protagonist isn't even Luke the poster child of the game, it's you
I would disagree because we have Ryu who was trying to understand what strength is to him while also trying to fight against the dark hado which leads to multiple events in past games and he has progressed to finally conquer it and embrace a better power which leads him to face Akuma in confidence, Akuma was fixated on making Ryu into his ultimate rivale by wanting to follow the same path as him but we see that he has begun to gain respect for Ryu and his path while still holding to his warriors code that conflicts with some villains like Bison, Ken lost everything because of JP and is trying to fix it while Guille is trying to investigate Nayshall.
These characters progress between each game and the story is important because it is reflected in their designs.
I like SF6's slice of life approach to its cast, even if admittedly little happens.
SF6 legit made me smile at seeing Ryu struggle with technology but willing to learn.
I found it all kinds of wholesome to see Chun take the time to find civilian clothes for him, and to see him actually wearing them in game.
And i found it cool that he still kept in contact with Retsu after all this years.
I found out more about Ryu as a person in one game than in the past 20 years of SF lore and movies.
I mean. Yes. Ryu for example, had a whole plot about going from a eager up-and coming fighter, scaring Sagat when he first lapsed into the satsui no hado (which formed a long lasting rivalry that actually evolved between games), then spent years struggling against that dark part of him before overcoming it for good. He also had stuff going on with Bison and had to master the void to finally conclude a storyline that lasted since SF Alpha. Which is why he is so laid back in SF6 (while still the disciplined martial artist he should be). He was a rookie in SF 1,now he is a master.
Street Fighter has never been the best at executing it's story, but it have a story. Lots of things happened.
