'Gbaghara' is a penitential song by Alex Ugwu, which like most of his song has many layers and levels of meanings, interpretation, expression, understanding, perspectives, appreciation and artistry. But this song in particular, as it pertains to the catholic faith and liturgy has an almost paradoxical polarity.
The song is written in the first person but it has to opposing but totally independent perspectives and contexts, which may also quite conveniently unite and co-exist. These main perspectives are that of a sinner seeking redemption and forgiveness for sins already committed and then the second perspective is that of someone in the state of grace that understands the weakness of humanity and how difficult it is to stay in the state of grace in the world of today and seeks both forgiveness for unknown sins committed and strength to overcome them in the future.
It is this polarity that makes this song a very suitable not just for every Christian's personal prayers but for the communion period of the holy mass. This is because there are always two parties present during the communion; Those in the state of grace(Whom typical take the communion) and those that aren't(for whom the communion is not meant for). This song connects with everybody present during that communion, including even the priests, in very deep ways.
