He's really arguing that Darren Huckerby and Dion Dublin are better footballers than the likes of Mbuemo and Ivan Toney? Wholly disagree.
Sure there is less depth now when it comes to Elite forwards.
But that's because most teams play with 3 in forward line and not 2. Only 1 central striker now in a 4 3 3. That doesn't mean you don't less defending that in a 4 4 2.
Also, when talking about the good (not elite) striker in the league, the likes of Richarlson (when at Everton) and Jiminez (at Wolves) are better overall footballers than a lot of the men he named. James Beattie? Niall Quinn? Dion Dublin? Agbonlahor? 1 season wonders in Kevin Phillips? or AJ? Nah, you're just remembering a lot of these players with nostalgia. AJ is no better than Ivan Toney or even Mitrovic.

I don't agree. Emile Heskey, Darius Vassell or Andy Johnson would be championship players today. Rio is talking nonsense trying to big up his own era. I admit the big 4 had more deeper teams of quality because it was the era before squad limits and FFP, so Chelsea, Liverpool, Man Utd and Arsenal could stockpile players, which you can't do with squad limits and FFP today. So there was one point where Arsenal had Henry, Bergkamp Reyes, Van Persie and Adebayor and Walcott all in the same team. You cannot have that much depth now. I think the overall quality of English players is higher today where nearly every English player is international class and more of the world's best foreigners play in the Premier League than the previous eras.

Rio played in an era where Inzaghi, R9, Drogba, Totti, Del Piero, Toni, Elber, Makaay etc were running wild. European football was much closer back then in terms of buying power, so naturally more teams had a top striker. Even in the premier league you had some good strikers.
Van Dijk faces a Lewa or Benz type rarely. The game is more athletic today, but a lot of those strikers would have made it even today.

    • @broski4570
      @broski4570 2 роки тому

Lewa and Benz literally just had a season that none of the players you mentioned ever came even once.

    • @omarbabakarkhail

@@broski4570 Strikers now are scoring more because the top defenders aren’t there anymore since modern football requires them to be jack of all trades rather than specialist defenders. R9 did it against the likes of Maldini, Nesta, Ferdinand and vidic, Stam, Hierro, Cannavaro, Thuram, Blanc, Desailly and so many more.
Football was played in a different way back then, but most of these guys weren’t just the type to punt it long, they could defend really well and then secondarily bring the ball out. I’ve lived long enough to tell you that I’d take that lot over a lot of modern day defenders.

However it is different in different eras..
That is why it is difficult to compare players across different eras..
Eg the role of fullbacks has changed so much between then and now. Player like trent wouldn't have maybe got much chance in the PL back then. He might have played as a RM instead of an RB.
Game has changed. Much more reliant on pace and power as opposed to technique. Premier league has always had that but now it has become more and more pronounced.

Defenders are expected to push up to half way line and defend high, their front protective central midfielders have to leave their CBs unprotected bombing on to press. Defenders have it much harder these days. It isn't a rigid striker they have to face like the days of old, but rather strikers full of movement and pressing. Strikers back then were expected to just stand up top and hope a lucky cross came in lol there were superb players back then but poor coaching. You bad the likes of Dave Jones, Glen Roeder, Peter Reid managing top flight clubs looool these guys wouldn't even be good enough to manage in championship this day and age. Defenders also move with hands behind their backs now like they are in the military.
I'm not trying to downplay what defenders had to deal with back then coz there were so many strikers back then and they were the main source of goals and most teams have the same pattern of play but now, defenders have so many different types of players to deal with from conventional strikers to unconventional ones, AMFs, wingers scoring freely, even central midfielders hitting double figures(Man city).

Using that as a foundation Pep has ruined the prem, for better or worse. I used to look forward to watch Match of the day every Saturday, since Pep come in not watched it once. Great style of play not taking anything away. But in my honest opinion the majority of Peps success comes from the media building it up and the weaker mentality of today's player. If teams now a days played to their advantage rather than trying to counter City they'd have more success. Imagine 1st minute of a game Roy Keane goes through Bernado, he's gunna be crying for at least 20minutes. Or Vidic heads a cross out and his head follows through on Haalands crown/temple he's not gunna get back up! He’s not bro. Yeah, I know he won player of the year and is no doubt a top 3 CB, if not number 1, but prime Rio was insane. Messi even had a difficult time against him. Yes, attacking players always have the advantage over defenders, because they are the ones that move the ball, and the defenders can only react to that (where the attacker puts the ball), but Rio was very good at reading an attackers movement and anticipated things very well. Rio was elite in the air. He was also very very fast and a very good passer for his position

Gary Neville said full backs used to focus solely on defending before...AWB would be classed as a dream full back back in the day now he is considered not good enough.

We look at Mitrovic for Fulham and think its mad that Fulham have got a world class goalscorer, 15 years ago they had strikers like Luis Saha, Clint Dempsey, Luis Boa Morte, Bobby Zamora, Dimitar Berbatov ect.... we forget just how many sick strikers there were back then in the 442 era. now teams are playing 433 you only need 2 or 3 good strikers in your squad bcus only 1 plays at one time., back then you needed 4 or 5 minimum.

Destroying evey argument for Rio being better than Vandijk
1 Rio faced harder and better atttackers: Interms of quality and quantity i do agree with him, but on the other hand lets not forget hes rarely been able to pocket them especially the likes of Drogba,R9,Del piero etc and the fact he also had a world class partner and defensively minded fullbacks and team to back him up. Vandijk on the other hand pretty much a solo team beats the best attackers on his own, going for a whole season without getting dribbled past yet playing against Messi,Hazard,Kun aguero,Neymar,Ronaldo etc, and for consistency the guy since 2018 has only had 26 players dribble past him while having the highest duel succes% rate of any prem cb.
2 Rio was a better player: Theres a very big bias when people compare Vvd to other legendary prem cb they just outwardly say VVd is light years behind there favorite defender with no genuinely good arguments. Vandijk pretty much outclasses Rio in almost every relevant individual stat with context taken into, Vandijk has a better tackle percentage%, rio has a better tackle succesion rate considering he was playing in a period where defenders could get away with career ending tackles, Vandijk has more blocked shots, Vandijk has more interceptions, Rio has more clearances again in a period where defenders only job was to defend, Vandijk has a better ariel duel succes rate,, Vandijk has more recoveries , Higher ground duel percent rate,, Vandijk has 0 own goals and Rio has 5. Vandijk throws Rio out of the water interms of game reading and attacking play, with more passes, higher pass percentage , more passes, more passes per match, but less cross percentage than rio, Vandijk has more through balls and accurate longballs. Yes the game has chanced but ive brough out attacking stats because United fans love saying Rio is the best rolls royce defender yet he gets outclassed by Vvd .Lets also not forget Vandijk has only played half of Rios career with Vandijk playing 264 prem games and Rio 504.
3 Consistency: Yes rio has be more consistent interms of maintaining a high level or play, but the argument that Vandijk only had 2-4 good seasons is just a blatant lie or youve been living under a rock, Vandijk has been worldclass since his southampton days even the likes of Chelsea,Bayern,Dortmund and Real madrid were trying to sighn him but his price was pretty high. So Vandijk has been worldclass for 8 years compared to Rios 10-12, and Vandijk is still playing and could add more years.
4 Individual awards and brilliance: Vandijk destroys Rio again, by winning more UCl defender of the seasons, Vandijk has a pfa player of the season as a centerback, and most of all Vandijk is the only defender to have won the UEFA player of the year beating both Messi and Ronaldo to it. He has also finished in the ballondor much higher than rio.
5 Prime: its not even close Vandijk was the closest player to messi in a ballondor race while Rio has never enterd past top 6.
