In the Netherlands we call the wooden shoes "klompen". They came from the 15th century and were literally just carved from wood to form shoes so people didn't have to walk barefoot anymore. The wood from a willow tree has always been very popular for these shoes. They dry out the wood then carve a shoe out of it. Now it's a shoe that's seen as a stereotype shoe for farmers and people that sell cheese on markets, but some farmers really do still wear these shoes. They're indeed actually pretty comfortable :)

Nessie didn't scare me as a child, but you know what did? The little moisture-absorbing silica gel packets that were in shoes and bags etc. My mum told me they're dangerous (probably because I wouldn't try and eat them or something), but because I was an anxious child, I thought that as soon as I so much as look in the general direction of a silica gel packet, I would spontaneously combust or something lol
