Jesus was held in low esteem

From the very beginning, his own family didn’t believe him and poured scorn on him. The Scribes and Pharisees complained that he ate a meal with tax collectors and sinners. And right at the end of his life, Pontius Pilate realised that Jesus was innocent but still had him beaten to an inch of his life. With the crowd baying for Jesus' blood, Pontius Pilate knowingly condemned an innocent man and released a known murderer, Barabbas. The Roman soldiers disregarded Jesus by putting a crown of thorns on his head. They mocked him and spat on him. When he was on the cross the chief priests, scribes, and elders mocked Him
