    The No.1 plates sell bikes.
I’d like to see “We went fast’s” stats on KTM’s No.1 plates in all codes of motorcycle racing over the span of the last 10-15 years. Phenomenal! from High speed desert racing, hard enduro all the way through to Supercross.
Sign the rider - give them what they need - secure the No.1 plate - sell the bikes - $ - repeat

KTM used to do “KTM YOUTHDAY” at the John Penton GNCC (just down the road from me). I have a picture of David knight giving me my finishing medal at the finish line from that day. KTM had the factory guys giving medals out at the finish line, I just so happened to get mine from my favorite racer at the time, David knight.
I also got David’s gear that weekend, and I got a signed copy of the John Penton autobiography book, signed by John himself (pics of that too), and signed by David knight too. This was approximately 2010. It was a super mud race. The Penton typically was. David’s gear was so muddy from that race it was impossible to sign.. so we took it home and washed it, and ran into David the following round at Sparta KY.
Great times. Also right before this I got myself a 85sx coming from a Honda.. since the first time riding that bike I’ve been a KTM fanboy. That was a 2006 85sx.. got it in 09 I think. Won my first mini overall on it..

I was the only jnr on KTM 80's and 125 for years in Victoria Australia, and those years were 86-94, those bikes were not good, but when you have no choice but to ride whatever your parents buy. And the last 125 I had was the 94 and it was soooo much better than the year before.

Kee van def Ven and Nicol. Though Nicol did go to Kawasaki for a couple of season, as a 19 year old Kurt did ride the last air-cooled 495/500 in the 1984 GP.
There was also Healey and Bobby Moore.
An important change for the brand was 1986 KTM80MX.

Why not mention Beta? They had a decent first season in Supercross, considering it was their first season. Won an LCQ or two even (a win is a win, right?). Something to build on anyway. Ducati will come out swinging for the fences next year and if the bike is good, I see them paying big bucks for the big name riders when contracts are up.

Ironically it was the Japanese that started or brought the mini bike era to the masses, with the CR60s, KX60s RMs and YZs, I grew up wanting a YZ 80 or RM 80 so much it made a fan of the bikes, KTM learnt from them while the Japanese in their arrogance have all but deserted the mini bike class's and tried to push 4ts and E bikes on kids, real kids don't want that dumb shit, they want to ride real bikes like their hero's do and in the late 70s and 80s and 90s the last real generation of Japanese engineers and execs new that, it made Kawasaki, they were literally non existent on start lines before the KX 80 in 83/84 onwards, it transferred to the big bikes! RMS and YZs dominated the 80cc class here, I mean dominated even the crappy YZ front mount radiator 80 which I thought looked so cool back then! they are just so arrogant disconnected, they think they can force everyone to drop what they grew up on and ride a 250 or 450 of theirs! They dominated so many class's Enduro (Its, PE's KDXs even the XR was better than 4ts today, every garage in my town had an XR in it) MX, road and now its all dominated by Euro brands! Look at Suzuki now, you get back what you put in, they have literally nothing Suzuki, more interested in making sewing machines or whatever! The Japanese frustrate me so much, they can make anything so good and be cost and performance leading, but instead they turned tried to be more like the Euros and then squeeze the life out of the consumer and the industry! I only ride Yamaha's because they still kept the mighty YZ 125/250 and its still carbed and massive parts available AFM and its one of the best bikes ever made imo!
But they need a wake up, both in the mini bike class's with 2ts if they want to retain the next generation, because once or the e-bikes come out, nothing will be the same except the bikes will all be ugly toasters on 2 wheels that have a different color, made in some Chinese factory!

Look at MotoGP. The Euro bikes have completely out-paced the Japanese. Suzuki and Kawasaki gave up a long time ago, and Yamaha and Honda are now embarrassingly uncompetitive.
Sadly, this decline is now visible in Japan as a whole. When your country's young people don't even want to make babies anymore you know you're in trouble. In short, Japan has lost its mojo. (Still a very nice place to visit, though.)
