sooooo.....did you get the polo team to come to texas and do a texan equine competition? and guns...there has to be a shooting competition too XD i want to see ultra "british" polo players try to use a lasso while riding
Fair enough. But, to be honest, I think Max was just making reference to the abnormality of it from an English perspective. We don’t really do guns in general 😅
@@SabrinaRodi Yes, the British don't do guns in general, but Max is seriously posh, probably went to boarding school and they are well used to guns for hunting pheasants and deer stalking, even clay pigeon shooting. Not to mention most public (that means private schools in the UK, weird I know) have Army cadets linked with them and most students fire guns on army ranges with the army guns. This is in order to train most future army oficers, as 90% of those come from boarding schools also. Sure not quite as much as Americans, but he will have been around plenty of guns for sure. He's saying things for jokes and effect
One of the hardest things about these cowboys playing this sport is the saddles. Cowboy saddles, or 'Western Saddles' are built for comfort and security vs English Saddles, or those used for polo are built for agility. It's a completely different feel, the cowboys kicked ass!
English saddles are probably derived from the millitary saddles used by lancers light calverymen. It's designed to stab or cut people dwn from saddleback. American saddles are designed for gunfighting and work. When we need agile saddles, we just use English designs, otherwise tlstability and comfort are far more important
Modern day polo is a gift from Manipur, India to the world. During the British Raj, they saw the locals play this game known in the native tongue as Sagol Kangjei. The British adopted the game, improved it with proper rules and modern polo was born. The oldest living polo ground in the world is in Manipur, a tiny state in northeast India. These are all recorded by the British themselves in their historical archives.
It's posh in England because horses are expensive but if you're a rancher and have and ride horses as part of the job, playing Polo is as posh as tractor drag racing. And come on. it's competitive, big mallet swinging, ball launching, goal scoring, horse riding, what could a cowboy not love about that?
Edit: Great video, the ending was great! You should do a fundraiser for this community, since they helped create your video. These communities are disappearing cause of corporate greed, this might be the last generation of cowboys.
GREAT WORK MAX 💯 Watching this after England defeated the USA in a Cricket match yesterday, awesome to see dream worthy cross over events, before GTA 6 😂
My brothers Dan is a self confessed cowboy with Scopophobia; if I had any money (I don't) I would pay good money to see him on UA-cam playing polo in England.
i find it VERY hard to believe the polo is one of/ the oldest sport considering it MUST have happened after the domestication of horses, but i guess it depends on the definiton of "sport"
He also calls it the oldest (team) sport in the world even though humanity had hundreds of existing team sports before we even had the concept of riding a horse. max doesnt seem to be too focused on facts when covering the setup of the video haha
I'm from Texas and we get tornadoes all the time in the panhandle that's the northernmost part that just sticks up hurricanes enter the Gulf in the summer
I know it's considered a posh sport, but always assumed that's because horses are expensive; Otherwise, it's just a few wooden mallets and a ball. So I'm kinda surprised they don't already play this, or at least have some "Americanised" version. You would think if you're in cowboy country - where everybody and their granny has a horse any how - and you are surrounded by vast tracts of pretty flat land, then this would be the ideal sport of choice. Especially as, ultimately, I'm guising polo is about showing off your ridding prowess.
We have a lot of polo in America! The University of North Texas polo team are back to back national champions, best college polo team in the country 2023 and 2024. One of those players was on the polo team in this video. Hes a two time Interscholastic champion too, making him a 4 time national champion. The girl on the team was captain of the Texas Christian University polo team and won the USPA Women’s Open in Houston a few years ago.
I played polo most of my teen and young adult life, and I can honestly say that I hope your cowboys will stick with it if they enjoyed themselves! For only a couple days of practice, they showed real potential! Polo is extremely dangerous and not something you want to mess with without proper training, so if they do stick with it, take lessons at the polo club! Also, polo ponies take YEARS to "make," (train) so please don't torture your everyday horses by trying to play polo on them!!

I think it was done for safety reasons. Their horses might not be used to the mallets being swung everywhere and polo horses tend to get really close to eachother. Nor would a western saddle be really helpful given it's size it would probably have been in the way
Great idea but very dangerous. Polo ponies actually know the game. It takes years to train a horse to play but once they learn, they are amazing. If you can stay on the horse, the horse will take you to the play. I was so surprised when I first started taking lessons!
