There're just so many faults with this film... I thought the premise was that they felt no emotion, but clearly they do, all the time.
Why would the police follow orders if they weren't afraid of repercussions?
Why would the society care about sense offenders, as they don't feel upset about them?
What motivates the clerics or whomever to do anything, since the can feel no sense of reward for their efforts?
And obviously the black colleague is motivated to catch Preston, and is clearly upset when he is framed by the fingerprints. This movie is ridiculous.
You can't separate the brain from, well the brain, like this.

      1) Police. Because it’s logical. Their whole existence is about leaving aside emotions and living to prosper the society. By killing those who they think are dangerous to society, they erase the threat of being eliminated as species. Logic, no emotions needed to follow such orders.
      2) They care about sense offenders since they think they are a threat to the society. Literally everything they see on the streets all the time is the information of how the emotions lead to death and world war 3. It’s logical to eliminate the treat. Same reason.
      3) Clerics don’t need to fill any gratitude for their work. They are the machines to eliminate the threat to society. By killing emotional guys they (by their logic and facts that are known to them) ensure the prosperity of their lives and human civilization. Did you watch the film while you were drunk or something?
      4) Ok, now I know that you actually WERE drunk while watching the film. His black colleague WAS sense offender, same as his boss. YES - he actually WAS motivated to catch Preston. He and the boss-guy both did not take Prosium, it becomes obvious in the final dialogue of the movie. Rewatch the film. The only illogical thing was that black guy kept smiling too much during the film - which would make him easy (even for Preston) to figure out.

Flawed as it is, I like "Equilibrium". It has a good premise and some very good ideas in it. However it does only the bare minimum with those ideas and leaves you wanting. It's a bit too cheesy and has that "90's action movie" stink to it as well.

But his fights are so easy for him they eliminate any possible tension. Even the final boss battle has an anticlimactic ending. Its not exactly a scary totalitarian regime when one guy takes it down with a few guns. Its also incredibly simplistic reducing complex sociopololitical issues to simple find and shoot the bad guy missions. In fairness this is a common problem in such stories which are based on the assumption that the good guys only have to win and its over.

I like "Equilibrium", but on the other hand, I do understand people who do not like it. However, in this video, Film Brain just fails miserably at attempting to be funny. And spends most of the time just bitching & moaning at every single thing he sees, rather than focusing on things that really matter. And screams about "symbolism" in completely random situations. And repeats this "Matrix-ripoff" bullshit that had already made me sick years ago - just because Grammaton Clerics wear something very similar to a cloak that was worn by Neo in a movie that wasn't even released at the time. Talking about plagiarism in advance.

Well, it was the third review I ever did, eight years ago, and this review isn't one of my finest hours (although it's one of my most controversial at the time). I wasn't saying "symbolism" at random images, but what I felt were heavy-handed metaphors for Preston's awakening throughout the work.
As for The Matrix comparisons, you can still feel the influence of it on the costume design and the gun kata, even if the exact style of dress wasn't until the follow ups. My opinion of this wasn't helped by the UK distributors releasing it to cash in on the run up to those being released that summer. In my later review of Ultraviolet (which is a far worse movie than this, I'll give you), I note that Wimmer actually lifts a gag from The Matrix straight up.

Dude, neither "symbolism" nor "metaphor" are cool names for any form of artistic expression that there is - just like "action movie" is not a cool name for any movie that features any form of action (in "Blade Runner", we have scenes with Deckard shooting the androids, so... hey, there's some action, so why don't we call it "action movie"?). They both have their meaning. And scenes that you're complaining about contain none of the above.

Preston switched the first gun when he was with Brandt, at the end of the first raid in the Nether against the sense-offenders. Though you're right about using 2 guns in the Nether. But you should imagine that Preston might have had a stash of illegal (unregistered) guns and ammo of his own. At the end of the movie, when he takes on the snipers, he pulls out again two pistols out of his ass. So, he isn't relying on the weapons that were legally given to him.

In my opinion, the gun switch works because the clerics always use leather gloves, thus their fingerprints wouldnt be on the weapons and they'd be tracing the killings to the guns of the clerics and not the serial numbers.

Actually it is possible to have your arms moving so fast it makes a "swoosh" noise. I do wing chun and I am able to move my right arm so fast when doing a sideways sweeping attack it actually makes a sound even when not wearing a shirt ( a test I did to confirm it was not the sound of fabric moving). But that is a combination of structure and technique - you move the arm in combination with pivoting your feet in a new direction. Just waving your arms gunkata-style is probably not going to do much good lol

    • @HarryBalzak
      @HarryBalzak 6 років тому +2

I never understood why people hated this review. Equilibrium really does seem like a bad, drawn out, boring movie. The ever obvious SYMBOLISM as well as the overly drawn-out implausible fight scenes. In the Matrix the fight scenes make sense because they're in a computer and can do whatever they want, here it makes no sense.

they chose the term "sense offender" to sound similar to "sex offender" on purpose. Again, it's symbolism. It's supposed to show the audience that people who feel emotions in the world of the movie are as despised as in our world people who violate other people's sexual autonomy are.

It might have been intentional. The other term was already established circa 2000. But if it was intentional I have no clue as to what if any point the director was making. I hope he just chose the term because he found it funny.'Hah it sounds like a you know what.' And not the alternative ie to imply some moral equivalence between the two.

To be honest, as much of a trainwreck plotwise this movie is, the shootout with the motorcycle goons seems to hint at an energy and sense of bonkers fun that a lot of the movie lacks to be "serious" and "badass." I think a movie with that has a combo of Gun Kata and Shoot 'Em Up's tone would at least be far more watchable

Speaking of old reviews... I noticed, that you did commit, though unintentionally, a typical Western mistake for Beverly Hills Cop III.
I'm not arguing your critique per se, but the fact of the time frame. Yes, for most it really was 7 years between '87 and '94, but for a bunch of people during the Cold War, like me, it only made it 5, given that many movies were blocked or came years later.
As for Preston's son in Equilibrium, I'm aware you do this for fun, so you might have your own divergences, like Doug does with Nostalgia and real reviews. Yet, his children hiding their true nature makes very much sense, especially if the father is a huge cog in the machine. This dictatorship, and I wish, all were fictional, was very similar to the society I grew up in, where the regime doesn't exclusively rely on military, and police, but also on opportunistic volunteers who snitch on others, regardless of committing a crime or not.
It's okay that you didn't like it, at least it did not feature a scene between Mary and Preston in bed, with John eating a donut.
