Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) is based on baby's placental cell-free DNA (cfDNA) analysis in maternal blood. At present it is the best screening test available to exclude Down's syndrome (trisomy 21 or T21). It has very high negative predictive value for T21 (more than 99%). NIPT is not diagnostic test and also cannot exclude any structural anomaly (physical defect) and must be combined with high quality examination of the baby by ultrasound.
