I had an English mastiff named Hagrid when I was little. He passed away when I was 8.
Hagrid, if you're reading this from the afterlife, I miss you. 😭

There are no words to describe how we love our English Mastiff . We live way out in the country and there are lots of coyotes and other varmints. He saved our little dog "Skippy" life when a coyote grabbed him. Rocky hit the coyote at a dead run and rolled him over twice!. He has saved our chickens 3 times from a coyote. When I give my wife a hug he slides in between us.

I had an English mastiff as a kid. A guy attacked me in the street when I was 13 and Sam busted through the screen door and bit him before he ran off. He was truly a member of our family. It's a tragedy that they only live for 8-10 years

He slides in between both your wife and yourself because in the animal kingdom are are no hugging. The only time you clinch like that is when you are fighting. He thinks you are fighting or are getting ready to fight each other and being a guardian dog he will put himself between you two so you don't hurt each other.

Our English Mastiff, Jessie Girl, passed away this past October 17th and we're still lost without her. And those who've never had an English Mastiff as a family member will never know what I'm talking about. She considered all women Mom, and would put her life on the line for anyone's child whether she knew them or not. Our Jessie Girl vocalized a lot when she had a toy trapped or whenever she wanted something she couldn't reach. Since I was on a chemo treatment and off work on Long Term Med Leave I had plenty of time to work with her. Many of her vocalizations sounded close to words so I decided to try to teach her to talk. And she took right to it. She couldn't make the "J" sound in Joe so she called me "Woe." She could make "M" sounds really easy and called my wife "Mama." She couldn't make a "T" sound very well so Out became "Owwww." Hungry was "Hungwa", I Love You was I Wuv You and she knew what it meant too. It was nothing to have her come into the room, hug you and say, I Wuv You Mama or I Wuv You Woe. In the middle of the night, many times, she would wake me by saying Woe, Woe and repeating it till I woke up. Then she would say Woe, Owwwww. And I got my but up and let her out ASAP. You didn't step in her poop, you tripped over it so I had a lot of motivation to get up and let her out. She had a vocabulary of about 25 words and it actually made our lives a lot easier because she could tell us when she was hungry or wanted out. She had about 45 stuffed animals and we named them all to challenge her. You could say, Jessie, bring me Sneech and she would go to her toy box and bring back that stuffed animal. She had more friends than I do. It was not uncommon at all to have a group of the neighborhood kids ring the door bell and ask if she could come out and play. She loved them all and protected the hell out of them. And it was a poor choice to yell at a woman or act threatening to a child around her. That's her in the profile pic. She was a runt, never got over 192 pounds but she knew who she was. As she got older the Vet would give us a target weight for her to keep her healthy. She weighed 160 when she passed. When my dog before her passed I immediately wanted another and since I'd only had cow dogs my whole life I described the dog I wanted to the Vet. He told me that I'd just described most of the Mastiff breeds but if I was serious about getting one I needed to read up on them first so we'd have a great relationship and the dog would have a great life. He told me the books to buy and I got them and started studying. I'm so glad he was there to guide me because they are a unique breed for sure. I followed the books to the letter and she was the best dog I'd ever had or ever met. One drawback is that our English Mastiff wanted to be part of our pack and wanted us as part of hers. We became inseparable and she had just as many human personality traits as canine. This detail makes it really difficult on everyone when they pass. Our entire neighborhood went into mourning when she went. I could do this all night so I'll back on out of here. But buy the books, study up on them and get an English Mastiff. Spend a lot of time with them, never scream at them and never, never hit one of them. You'll probably never regain their trust again if you do.

This is why English mastiff is such a wonderful dog. They are so gentle and loving. We had a beautiful English mastiff , he got attacked in the park by a little jack Russell . He just Lay down and took it , didn’t retaliate. The jack Russel ripped his legs to shreds. But he just wouldn’t attack. Back. . He was so scared . Gentle giants

So I had a Basset for almost 14 years, and sadly put him down this last October. For a while I didn't want another dog, wouldn't consider it, the pain was just to new to think about it. Then about 6 months after I am on Facebook and see a buddy of mine from high school who posted a video of a litter of 11 English Mastiff pups. I ended up talking to the breeder and 8 of 11 were still available. I ended up going with the puppy that was the first to get out of the whelping pen, first to show the other dogs how to do the same, loved to explore, and seemed like a smart cookie. I have had him now for going on my 6th week and all I can say is just the other day "I don't know what it is but I am bonding way more with this dog for some reason". My Basset "Butters" was lovable, goofy, and was a good boy who had unending love, and he will never be replaced in my heart. But there is something about this breed, their intelligence, affection, train-ability, power, and just down right adorableness cannot be explained. But more than anything it is this animals loyalty and gentleness that really comes out the more you get to know them and are around them. The most important thing for a dog of this size is for him to be socialized and to be trained, the combination of both will make him have the highest amount of patience possible.

Best dog we ever had! Wonderful with children but of course always supervise children with animals and teach them how to be gentle. A good dog who's had enough will get up and walk away, they should have a place (like a crate) where the kids are not allowed so they can rest without being bothered. Our mastiff loved kids and was an excellent guardian for the whole family.

Sadly bo passed away when I was 11 and baby passed when I was 15 but I never loved anything as much as I did baby and bo they were like brother and sister to me. I remember I used to ride baby and bo like a horse and they never really cared to this day I wish I had a house with enough room to have them. I love this breed 10/10 for me.

Gail F I agree with you. Children shouldn't grab any thing on the dogs head ( Ears, Eyes and mouth). My first dog was a Jack Russel Cross Collier, who loved children at first, than my mum was babysitting (girl was she was 5yo). The girl grabbed her ear and yanked it, she bit her pretty badly. From than on she hated children apart from babies.

Gail F ive had English mastiffs all my life even when i was a baby and as long as you train the mastiff right then they will be fine with that they have extra skin around their face as well and the baby didn't even touch the dogs eye. if you are saying that you know that the dog would not be okay with that you could be right but all dogs are different and that dogs ears were not back meaning it wasnt upset and the dogs tail was wagging. and to everyone saying they abused that dog by doing that you are wrong it dosnt hurt the dog at all and i know this because they were bred as fighting dogs so they are very strog

Yes, they realize they are like "puppies." And if the puppy grows up with them and stays with them, is it a surprise that they continue to love them? My little kids refer to the first time dogs see kids which are strange to them.

We had a mastiff mix. A loyal dog and friend. He was great with my little nieces . We had to put him down this past March he couldn’t walk anymore. I lost a true friend that day.

I had an English mastiff growing up and they are very good with kids. He put up with a lot from us and only ever gave as an annoyed look and dealt with it. He was very lazy and slow lol. He only ever growled at me twice when he got old and sick

Mastiffs are wonderful with children of all ages! Very patient and sweet, you jus have to teach your child that the dog is not a toy and not to pull their ears or to crawl on them. Although, I'm sure the mastiff wouldn't mind!

Whether tolerant or not, dogs shouldn't be abused by adults throwing a baby in their way for their own enjoyment. That cow at 2:09 is not teaching the child respect for the dog or is she respecting the dog. Just because they won't attack, or growl doesn't give an adult the right to drag a child over them.

Agreed, Hrh. We have a mastiff and I would never allow our daughter to treat her this way. Their gentle giants which means they’ll let a lot slid even if they don’t like what’s going on. What if the baby tried to crawl on top of her and the dog stood to move away, baby is going to a long way and get hurt. Not to mention they have weak backs, don’t encourage your children to climb on them.

Yes, the dog is humiliated. The dog cares. The dog is not being treated like a member of the family, but like a subservient. The dog may get fed, and may have a warm bed, but it's not a part of the family. It is just property to them.

The one at 1:40 really creeps me out. That dog appeared seriously stressed, and the parents were pushing it further and further out of its comfort zone. The tail wag at the end of the clip was not a friendly one, and did you see the whites of her eyes?
