    Most people have to keep track of at least a few keys. The easiest way to do that is to just keep them all on one key ring. But the more keys that you have, the more they fan out on the ring. If you have a lot of keys, then your key ring can get pretty bulky and impractical to carry in your pocket. Here is an alternate design for holding and organizing your keys that is a little more efficient.
    The design of this key holder is very similar in construction to a Swiss Army Knife. The keys are arranged on two parallel bars. Each key can be rotated into the handle for compact storage and rotated back out for use.

    While that's a pretty cool gadget, the object of Make is to... well Make stuff. Just about everyone on these videos are more interested in doing things themselves. I'm sure there are people out there that have even improved on this basic design to make it even better. The bladekey is pretty neat, I must say so. But I'd rather use my own means and do it myself. I get the satisfaction out of it and I solve a problem. Twofold success right there my friend.

    I had one once years ago until I accidentally bumped it while inserted into the lock. The extra leverage made short work of snapping that key right off while still in the lock.

    I can't see how the extra wood, hardware and sheet metal are any heavier than a lot of key rings you can buy.
    Of course the bigger issue is very few if any cars made in say the last 5 years or so (maybe more) use keys that don't have a big plastic head. I think maybe you could shave down or remove the plastic but not if its also your fob or has some kind of anti theft device in it.

    I made something similar a while ago for my big ass mass of work keys (as have many others if you search around, with Swiss Army knives, Leathermans, custom stuff, etc), albeit mine's much simpler to make and ghettoer looking as a result, or I guess cooler if you like a more barebones look. It's not difficult to add 1 or 2 keys. For 1 key add 1 washer and the key to one end and 2 washers to the other. For 2 keys add 1 washer and 1 key to each end. If doing that is too much trouble for you just leave them on the key ring or leave them all loose in your pocket.
    Personally, I like having various keys in various places. That way if I lose any I only lose a few and very few, if any, important ones. I learned early to cut my losses. I also have 2 wallets and don't keep money in either.

  • @Firesoar13
    @Firesoar13 11 років тому

    I solved this by making a sheath for the grip of the key and attaching them with wire. When driving, simply remove the key from the ring and let the ring hang.
    For modern cars with chipped or electric keys/fobs, add an old or blank key to the ring, cut to a manageable length and drill a hole in it. Attach a chain, key ring or wire to it and use that to hold your car key and/or key fob.

  • @spokehedz
    @spokehedz 11 років тому

    Uhh... There's 8 keys there. That is maybe 5oz of weight, since each key is like half an ounce. I bet you could shave off .2oz from each key if you just had the hole for each key and just enough metal for the washer to have some friction on. But even still, 5oz of weight is nothing. You most likely put a pound of force onto your ignition every time you start it. So a bump of two from this won't hurt it at all. I want to see some proof of this happening. Even snopes says this amount is fine.

  • @ZombieRonSwanson
    @ZombieRonSwanson 11 років тому

    8 keys that is cute, I wish, my daily carry is 18 keys I use at least half every day

  • @smaklilu90
    @smaklilu90 11 років тому

    so your design contains a total of 8 keys. and for 8 keys it should work fine. but, if you keep on adding keys on your design its gone buldge your poket like crazy due to the fact the keys are stacked on each other. In The traditional way the keys are not staked up so they are free to spread around your pocket than bulging up.

  • @spokehedz
    @spokehedz 11 років тому

    Ah, I see. Yes, I can see that being an issue. Only thing being that around here they run your plates before they approach the car, and then the first thing they ask for is license and proof of insurance. So the license and the plates would match--and then at that point, what do they care if you start your car with a tuna fish?

  • @Mr420ways

    I love this idea..i would have used better wood like oak or black walnut .also getting difrent colored anodized aluminum keys made would make it easier to identify your keys

  • @zodwraith5745
    @zodwraith5745 11 років тому

    Interesting idea for fun but impractical. No newer car keys would fit as they're huge and would require enlarging the whole thing to a size where it's pointless. Also what about key fobs or like my car key where the key is a fob itself? Cool project though.

    yeah nice touch, but it wasn't mentioned in the video. he ment drilling a hole which the nut could be in so it could be more or less level with the wood, since you can't drill a polygonal hole :)

  • @jonoj45
    @jonoj45 11 років тому

    It's more leverage. Like how you can't pry open a door with a quarter, but you can with a crowbar. If it sticks out horizontal, there's more leverage on the end, thus making it easier to hurt your car.

    3" mending plate (got at Lowes), knurled nuts, socket head cap screws (I think #6-32), and nylon spacer and keyring to even the sides up. Any screws would work...I just liked the look of the socket heads, and the knurled nuts can be removed/retightened with thumbs if needed (and otherwise regular nuts came loose without Loctite in my experience with other key experiments). I didn't use washers here cause it added a crapload of thickness with that many keys.
