It might be called 洋刀 or “yougatana” (Yōgatana) if we’re making things up. It would translate to “western style sword/ katana.”
Tyranth himself dubbed it the Sword of Content last video
How about Gaijin-tana?
I am thinking of what could be looks a double bladed sword with katana hilt but ?I just remember Chinese long sword
Artana.
The closest in form to a existing design would be a Swiss Sabre, as it pretty much meets all the characteristics of one, just with an exotic origin for the blade.
The Shatana of course
The Shadtana
No it is a already existing eastern sword like it IT IS EITHER A JAPANESE DASHI OR DACHI OR A CHINESE DAO SWORD LOOK THEM UP
@@dreadlordaxtonus6673 (it's not)
@@dreadlordaxtonus6673 This is literally a katana with a cross guard how exactly does it look like a Jitte or a Dao. They have no cross guard nor really any guard at all.
Shatana? I ‘ardly know her!
Come on, this is a TRUE Bastard Sword! Finally something that really deserves the name.
That's what I was thinking.
And an AWESOME bastard it is!
The best of east and west! :D
Maybe a bastard son-of-a-bitch sword...
By that logic I ask you: Who is the king and who the whore then?
I can't believe Shad and Tyron still haven't realised that they've essentially unintentionally made a book-accurate Wheel of Time sword.
Same dude
I would disagree. It is a Grayson sword like the one Honor used as Protectors Champion
i said this on the build video
@@danpit2001 Me too
I also made the same reference, but after thinking about it, the sword from WoT is straighter up until close to the tip, then it curves. Still it's the closest we got.
Shad introducing the sword to the world and Tyranth calling his creation an abomination gives off big Sauron and Celebrimbor energy
Was not expecting Silmarillion references in UA-cam comments today…
@@ccox4669But I'm all for it.
Just wait for somebody to become a pole
"My father never loved me."
~Sword Of Tyanth.
You mean when Sauron suggested to Celebrimbor to make an alloy?
The Longsword gets the name "Bastard Sword" in a lot of RPGs.
So I recommend "Bastard Katana."
I think Tyranth can get behind the name.
Bastard Katana is better than Shatana imo
Bastard sword or hand and a half sword is called that because it’s between a one handed sword and a long sword attributes. So bastard katana really fits.
It works on multiple levels.
Or a Bastard Scimitar
Well the bastardsword in rpgs is more the inbetween from a longsword and a greatsword.
Which was long time the used definition, until the 2000s hit and even small swords get called big swords.
The comparison between both re-hilted "Scimitana" and "Katalong" will be super interesting. Love this project!
I can wait to see the Katalong, I think it's going to look like a long spike
I feel like the Chinese has a blade that looked like a scimitar with a katana hilt and handle.
@xostler thinking of a Dao maybe? Single edged blade round blade guard but a more standard handle with a pommel
@@J.sh_CDN yeah I think that’s it!
Katalong sounds like a crappy name for a nodachi...
"Behold!!! The KataLONG!"
This show really needed Tyranth. No one else pushes back and argues with Shad the way he does. It adds so much to the show
When Tiranth was a lad he looked up into the sky and made a wish to create the greatest sword ever designed. Little did he know the finger of nearby monkeys paw did close.
7 years later, a zombie katana knocks on his door
@@masquerader101
Tyranth asks, "If you are a zombie sword, are you a rusted corpse instead of a rotten corpse?"

@@TheManofthecross But to understand why Shad made a video on that.
Gotta say I really like the Tiranth blade and I kind of want one now.
Now you MUST make a Long sword with a tsuba, diamond wrap pinned hilt and no pommel.
That would sho bad it would end up being sho good.
The cursed longsword!
this is law of equivalent exchange, for every good abomination there must be bad abomination
I think that that'd look awsome...
Yes. Bastardization of all swords shadisisation
Shad's enthusiasm for crimes against swords is infectious
I love how this entire saga's been Shad loving the sword and Tyranth slowly dying inside.
Katana: What are you?
Scimitana: I’m you but better.
And here comes the O-Scimitana with the spring steel chair!
From the top rope!
lmao i needed a good laugh
It's a sword so legendary even the creator hated it. It is shrouded in mist as to its identity but a sword none the less.
I immediately started thinking about guts' sword being described hahaha
I like that you and Tyranth are able to respectfully disagree so much. It’s interesting and a healthy dynamic.
Agreed!
I feel like a "Swiss Saber" style hilt/hand protection with an actual katana blade would be the ideal outcome of this project.
It’s adorable how self conscious Tyranth is about his own work.
Every artist is their own worst ______.
Tytana lol
bro your profile name is so cursed...
Because both the quality of the replacement parts and the proportions are indeed far from ideal lol. No need to be an artist in the strict definition of the things to understand this. When you can do a lot better but you're tasked to lower your standards for a project (that you actually would've been also interested in otherwise), it stings. So I understand him.
That said, despite all the technical jank he did well. :D
He is like God in that regard. He hates his own creation. 😅 Oh wait, that's not funny.😬
What I love about this sword is that it's not some impossible fantasy sword. It's completely possible that a single example of such a sword could have existed but has been lost to history.
They do exist, they're called Swiss sabers with a exotic blade, not an uncommon design, you just need to have a reasonable knowledge of swords to identify it.
It's entirely possible some Japanese Smith or merchant brought a longsword with him from travels from afar, and then tried to incorporate aspects of it into a katana, but it just never caught on with the highly traditional samurai.Samurai.
What would be more likely is if a Chinese merchant or Smith tried to modify a Katana and it just never went anywhere.
@@Scuzzlebutt142 Its similar just like the kriegsmesser, but it isnt actually that. This literally uses a katana blade. The swiss were not importing katana blades from japan.
When I originally watched the build video it made me imagine a scenario in which a Japanese sword smith got his hands on say, a European or middle eastern sword and thought, 「まあ、これオモロいやつやなぁ。なんとか作ってみようかなぁ。」
It’s hardly unprecedented. I recently learned of Ming dynasty Chinese sailors witnessing the combat effectiveness of ootou and uchigatana in the hands of Japanese pirates and basically imitated the design. There were notable design differences, but they remained popular in China well into the early 20th century, so pretty good weapons.
@@stgibbs86 So what? This thing they created has a standard cross guard and pommel, just like the construction of a Swiss Saber.
And using an imported blade is a very european thing, as they imported blades from all over and put them in their own furniture, didn't make them not an example of the sword just cause the blade was imported.
If I came across this thing in the wild, and didn't have the backstory, I would classify it as a Swiss saber by its form. What components you used to form it really don't matter.
The same way if you fit a Messer blade onto a haft, my first thought would be Naginata, not trying to make up a term for it.
There is a sword in Bloodborne called Chikage, which is a katana with a crossguard and an overly ornate hilt and pommel. This sword reminds me of it.
I am absolutely in love with that scimitana. Takes parts I adore about the scimitar and improves on what I don’t. Really wish I had one like that!
God, I love it here. I’m a prototype engineer, programmer, and machinist. Making custom stuff (abominations) is a huge passion of mine. Never change, guys. Never change.
The chaotic professional energy between them two is amazing.
Even more chaotic when Nate is present.
Shadiversity becoming the boys channel is definitely the best thing that ever happened to shadiversity
I wish we could work with you guys on these! Would be a lot of fun and Chris has actually done this exercise before. Just to add, heavier overall swords do not necessarily hit harder, it really does depend on distribution of that mass and how it's used (ie balance point, and how it's swung). An easy way to see this is a variety of feders and sparring swords. If the POB is pulled way back to the guard compared to farther out POBs, they tend to hit a lot lighter, no matter the overall weight. OH! and if you want to do a larger O katana with a euro grip, I think a 1060 blade would be much better than a 1040 blade. Only because those makers tend to really nail the heat treat with 1060 more consistently.
It reminds me of Mugen's sword in Samurai Champloo. Mugen's sword has a guard like a blade like a katana, a guard like a sai, and a hilt like a jian. It's a mashup of different weapons kind of like your own.
Shad: "We improved the katana"
Also Shad: "This is an abomination"
i agree with ty that the pommel looks weird and a different pommel would look and feel better probably. maybe a pommel like the one in the kriegsmesser. the handle looks a bit chonky as well and i noticed they didnt remove the menuki on the handle but wrapped on top of it, which makes it look chonkier. but overall doesn't look too bad. i always thought a katana would be better with a crossguard but also keeping the rings around it, like in some tournament long swords
as a physics student, E=.5mv^2. You have slightly more mass in motion, and the mass that's there is moving faster, therefore you will apply more energy in the strike, increasing the force applied and the cutting capacity. The weight distribution thing works because, by putting the mass further from the point of rotation, you increase the moment arm and the speed of that mass, allowing it to store more energy in it's motion, but adding the counterbalance doesn't decrease the moment arm of the existing mass, it only adds more mass.
You used the proper science words to describe what I was thinking during the video.
I can't believe Shad and Tyranth are essentially doing the sword equivalent of the "are you into girls with big boobs or big butts?" argument, and PS Shad is right... in more ways than one
Also we should agree that the name of that specific sword, but not the sword type but that specific one, should be the abomination
I loved the feature of Fallout 4 where you could customize you weapons, like changing up the receiver, muzzle etc. and you'd get different effects. It would be fun if you could do the same in a fantasy game with medieval style weapons.
There was a game that allowed you to do that, but not nearly to the extent that it should have. It was called Vagrant Story. I played it for about 2 weeks when it was released, and didn't think about it much until now.
“This is not the only abomination we are going to be making.” Tyrinth dying inside
i love how shad is just laughing like a disney villan when getting tyrinth to admit 2 sided swords have more versatility in a fight
I love watching this kind of stuff. Not just a review, but some guys that love swords genuinely having fun with them!
It’s like watching a gearhead’s channel where you’d see something like “I put a Lamborghini engine in this Jeep. Let’s see what she can do!” kind of thing.
It’s obvious you are enjoying yourselves and it’s contagious! Thanks for the fun watch!
You know, these sword mod videos, starting from the Machete Falchion to this, have been my absolutely favourite videos and i eagerly await them! Thanks for this!
Tyranth brings so much to the channel. i remember being skeptical of him coming on back when he first started. He's long since proved me wrong and became one of my Shadiversity staples.
I remember there was another guy who came in after Oz, what happened to him?
@@kingofsapi I know, Oz was pretty cool.
Nate and Tyranth are amazing contributions to the channel that have allowed it to, atmospherically anyway, ascend into T.V quality showmanship in my opinion. Shadiveristy could easily be put on History channel for instance and compete with the crap that's on there easily, if not become a staple show.
@@kingofsapi If you're referring to Nathan (different from Nate), I think he films the videos but is often on Knights Watch (one of their other channels). There's also a guy who appeared briefly on Shadiversity but is still occasionally on Knights Watch also.
I remember at first he gave off Lofty Pixels vibes. Nice guy, but always taking the wrong contrary opinion on popculture.
Don't forget, there is historical precedent for swords being rehilted with a different style of hilt. I believe the pata (Indian gauntlet sword) was often made with a preexisting sword blade that was originally a more like a European longsword.
Naginata (katana-on-a-stick) were often made using recycled katana blades.
I don't think that adding mass anywhere on a sword could allow you to accelerate it faster (except in a gravity assisted strike). Adding a pommel can make a sword easier to handle, but it won't help you swing it faster.
You two arguing about the benefits of the point of balance, has me going: “FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!” 😆
The sword is a really cool experiment and I dig it. I also love how uncomfortable Tyranth is with his creation; I can feel his mental pain and it is horribly enjoyable when showcased with Shad's enthusiasm.
It's a Bastard sword, an unholy fusion that somehow works. I love it.
Thanks for going into the detail on differences between the two handed falchion, the Keigsmesser and the Tyranth blade.
Melee related abominations are the future of this channel and be milked near endlessly and i am completely here for it
There's also a fantasy anime from 1998 named the Vision of Escaflowne, in which the characters used to wield swords like this. The blades looked oriental as the Japanese katana, but the guards were exactly like the one you made.
This comment. I've always been a huge fan of Katana with Western guards. It's been used in Japanese fantasy for over two decades, and they are awesome.
Between scimitana and shabbard, the puns you guys come up with for naming things are amazing. I am known for loving puns and your guys' puns are top tier.
Also, if you guys make a follow-up using an o-katana blade, would that make it an o-scimitana? And would it then be large enough to put in a shabbard? It would be great seeing your original designs in conjunction.
In my opinion that would be pushing odachi territory.
I'm glad you let Tyranth title the video
so, you guys basically made what my ideal falchion looks like with a little messer thrown in.
Sabre? Falchion? Swordtana?
With the hilt construcrion, it is a katana hilt ... rather similar to a messer ... but with a sword pommel ...
Falchion.
Or swordtana.

I'd still say Nanban-tachi, like I said before. It's a katana in the style of the Nanban, the foreigners (the Portuguese) that arrived from the south.
It also calls to mind the Nanban-do Gusoku, or Southern Foreigner's armor. It's armor made by the Japanese to try and copy the European style of plate armor. I think the two would look very odd, but very fitting together.
Nanban-tachi is actually a perfect name
Ooh, yes, I like that. The only issue is that this wasn't made by the Japanese.
@@CowCommando I don't think it's a parmesano reggiano situation where it can only be called a katana if it's made in Japan. I think the name is apt.
The Tyranth blade is the perfect name. He made it. That's just how that works.
Shad, a man of Faith fostering such heresy 😆 “Goooooood… let the Scimitana flow through you…”
According to Dragalia Lost, a weapon that is both Blade and Sword would be called a "Blord."
This sort of fun, speculative, entertaining/comedic, and truly expert analysis is exactly the pocket this channel plays in best - and like no other.
The scimitana reminds me of the description of Rand’s sword in Wheel of Time. I kind of like it. Innovative, unique and something new. Strong work!
tyranth is dying inside everytime shad says "ultimate katana!" xD
A longsword with a Katana handle sounds incredibly cursed, but I'm here for it
The Chinese beat us to it, iirc I believe it's a type of dao
The Chinese already did it
The entire hema community just shuddered at that thought
?
Just sounds like what's been called commercially a Dai-katana to me.
I'd classify the new sword: "Australian Hybrid Scimitana, 'Tyranthbane' style"
Just love how at 5:40 he didn’t liked the “scimitana” name, but when he heard alternative one - “Scimitana you say? Sounds good to me” 😂😂😂
There's a video on Ask Seki Sensei where the kenjutsu master tries a european style sword for the first time. One of the first things he comments is that the bigger guard would mean he has to rethink a lot of his techniques, since they usually do the downward strike from over the head and the cross guard would cause him to hit himself.
I think this types of creations should have their own clasification like
Triggering swords or Tryranth's bane
Tyranth's Bane sound vert cool.

I might call it the Falcon Blade from Dragon Warrior known for granting an extra attack.
We all know that if the samurai had this beauty of a sword, they would be around even today, overpowering even firearms.
Honestly, while I'm not a sword expert, I do not agree with changing to a circular pommel. I think modifying it to make it more scimitar-esque would look better than making it more European. Unsure how the feel of the sword would be affected but to me the blade is far more similar to a scimitar than a falchuon
Who gives a shit about how a sword looks? I'd rather have a blade that can prevent my hands from being cut off by the other guy than some art object.
@@MeepChangeling Apparently a lot of people back in the day cared about how their sword looked. Ask the people burried in sutton hoo for example.

It's like a longsword and a katana had a baby.
2 handed Falchion(I call it KriegsFalchion)
I call it the heron
This is what happens when swords don't use protection
Indeed, an absolute abomination.
I may be completely wrong but here is my take:
When you cut something it means you have surpassed its maximum strain resistance. Strain, like pressure, is the force-to-area ratio and force is mass multiplied with acceleration. In order to increase the acceleration you would need a bigger lever. Now in a two-handed sword the lever has more to do with your two hands and less to do with the center of mass. As a result the change of center of mass is way less impactful than the change in mass.
Looks a lot like Calandor, from wheel of Time, or the Pathfinder dueling sword. People have been thinking about making such a sword for a while.
That's what I thought. It looked like a heron marked sword
the giant swords. carbon fiber swords and now the katana and longsword abomination. i can't wait for the future content!
cannot wait to see the o-katana "remixed" with an european-style handle and crossguard
Should've called this episode spoiler alert with the amount of times it was said lol.
Regarding the balance and how it affects cutting force I agree with Shad. What comes to my mind is horsepower. HP is calculated with both torque and speed. You can increase an engines HP by increasing the size of the pistons, and therefore increasing their torque. Or you can move them faster. Both will increase the overall HP of the engine, the difference is how you transfer that energy to the wheels, and the same is true here. Yes, you can use conservation of force to keep that mass moving, but a more balanced sword will be easier to accelerate which will make it more responsive and maneuverable.
There’s a reason the Formula 1 cars have smaller pistons and shorter stroke which allows them to run at a higher RPM. That allows the engines to rev up and down quicker which makes them more responsive to the constantly changing RPM they need for maneuvering through corners and then accelerating.
Vs NASCAR, where more time is spent in straightaways, and even corners are usually not as tight, so larger bore pistons can be used since there isn’t as much accelerating and decelerating.
The Tyranthian Scimtana needs a longer blade, a slightly longer grip, and a fishtail pommel.
The Katana's weakness is always reach, and since you are adding weight in pommel you can balance that against length, and the fishtail gives you the most capacity to choke down the grip to stretch out the reach further.
You would be getting the benefits of a Miao Dao without having the overlong grip due to the pommel weight - getting it more into the longsword family.
There is a reason why short swords are so often stabbers - because stabbing loses no energy with shorter length (just reach). Slashing does lose energy the shorter the blade.
I love this modified, improved Katana. Everything about it is awesome. You've taken a symbol of weeb obsession, and made a thing of true beauty out of it.
Its a symbol of our culture(by our I mean the Japanese people) that has been taken out of context by weebs
Wow that's rude as hell. I guess japanese culture didn't exist before the 20th century.
@@inali_illustrates9142You can't do proper Iado with that kind of guard and different sword center of balance
@@pauloazuela8488 ye
"My sword is blunt. It does damage with it's weight." quote from Guts
The longer distance from the tip to the center of mass means that it will be slightly faster on impact. combine that with the additional weight and it means that it should have more angular momentum. It should also give you more point control. It becomes more of a slashing weapon than a chopping blde, though, because the extra mass is now in the handle. On another side note, by adding that heavy pommel, you add in the possibility of a pommel strike to a weapon that never really had one before. Options are good.
Folks be complaining about lowering the center of rotation. When it actually means there is more blade above that point actively helping you cut. And the shorter lever arm makes it easier to move. The only weakness is a lowered resistance to binding blades applying more force back to the user, which we helped fix with a competent cross guard.
The argument is like saying a longsword is worse than a broadsword because the blade is longer!
Shad looked so excited about making an Okatana version
I think the problem is it's unrefined. I think if you took the time to make quality parts that look good together then Tyranth would warm up to it much more.
Thats how you know Tyranth is a professional, he completed the sword even though both the parts and whole were despicable.
It's going to be fun watching Tyranth really put the Fuse ability from TotK into practice. 😂
This sward actually is almost exactly the way I imagined the Heron marked blade in "The Wheel of Time" series (books)
If Shad got shardblades, their souls would SUFFER!
No don't put a pommel on it at all! You should keep the handle the same, just add the cross guard, perhaps a less symmetrical one, an L shape pointing down edge side, and L pointing up on spine side
I would probably call this specific, individual sword _Tyranth's Shame_
I can't wait to see the ultimate sword, a SCIMITANA! I can't wait to see this project blossom a perfect sword!
For real though, Tyranth is one craft dude. He made something as straightforward as a pokeball and had me entertained and impressed the whole time.
This sword is obviously cooler but its the principle. He cares about the craft and it shows 🙏🏽
European double-edged sword with a Katana style handle construction?
Yeah... I think I just died a little inside. 😂
But I can't wait to see what's next for this series!
Basically a long toothpick spike? I'm excited too though equally horrified. I imagine it will cut well though
That...essentially sounds not too dissimilar from a jian.
Should try different weight, shapes of crossguard, wrap, & pommel to see which one has the best combination.
In the Honor Harrington series, there's a blade that's essentially this - crossguard + katana blade. It does have a straight third before the typical katana blade, but what you produced sounds close to it.
Yo I hadn't even thought about that. (That duel at the end of flag in exile was very satisfying.)
Flag in Exile, you know, I was just thinking about that just before i spotted the comment. Not only that, this also happens to be pretty close to what a heron mark blade from wheel of time is supposed to look like.
@FiliusFidelis aw man another great series. (RIP og heron marked sword, you served well 8D) Were all the heron marked blades that style or was it just Rand's?
@sandpirate1662 i think the heron mark indicated it was the sword of a master, rather than a specific style
@@sandpirate1662 Not 100% certain as all that many other swords were discussed but the real Heron Mark swords were mass produced during the War of Power though so I'd assume so. Also his, his fathers, sword was unusual, finer, more ornamented with Herons than most, Lan's blade were a lot more plain with only a heronengravig on the blade itself (if i remember right). I think it was Lan who hypothesized that Rand's sword had belonged to an officer during the WoP.
Shad is turning into some type of mad scientist
Another thing they could do to improve the aesthetics beyond a new pommel would be to bend the cross guard. I think it would look better if the bent it up in the back and down in the front.
I also suggest that you guys use a thing cross guard like the one used on Shad's type XVIIIb. It'll look better than a thicker cross guard methinks.
I LOVE this sort of forged in fire/myth busters crossover type content.
Inb4 we get them making swords from the ground up
If you lower the point of balance toward the hilt then you are adding mass to the working side of the lever and mass x speed = force. So it should have more force with the new hilt assuming that speed is constant.
Perfect camera angle for beautiful sun reflections on blades :)
Is this going to be like that scene from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly where Tuco assembles a new revolver from all sorts of different other guns, except with swords.
